THE ENSTOOLMENT OF ASANTEHENE: [OTUMFOUR OSEI TUTU II]

Continuing our previous talk with Teacher Kantanka on the life story of Otumfour Osei Tutu II
[Greetings]
[TEACHER K.] Otumfour was isolated for a period of 3 weeks, where he went through training and education on kingship. In the year 1999, he was enstooled. His coronation took place at the Manhyia Palace Park after three weeks of training to become the king. He swore an oath to all of Asanteman at Manhyia , and then to the Golden Stool at Pampaso, Amakom. He swore an oath with two different swords. He was then adorned in ‘batakari’ sat in a palanquin, and sent back to Manhyia Palace where he displayed his courage, strength and power. This indicates his willingness to lead his people in times of war and adversity.
That is how he became the Asante King we know today as Otumfour Osei Tutu II. Because of his supremacy, all other sub-chiefs in Ashanti Region and parts of Ghana swear an oath of allegiance to him. In Asante culture, it is mandatory for every elected sub-chief to swear an oath in the Presence of the King.

Let’s talk about his personality
[TEACHER K.] Every person has a personality which may be a good or bad one. Most times, the bad side of people are never mentioned not because they are not known, but because we do not like to talk about it. We tend to focus on the good side.
Otumfour Osei Tutu II is a decent man, very humble and hardworking. He is true to his words and forgiving at heart. He is a lover of justice. He is jovial and social. He is fair and firm. This has earned him the title ‘King Solomon’. He is someone with a retentive memory, Sharp and kind. He is a peace maker.
[ODO SERWAA] Is Otumfour married?
[TEACHER K] Customarily, a king can have many wives as he chooses, as being the king meant inheriting the wives and concubines of all the kings that came before you. In Otumfour’s case, he is married to one woman, Lady Julia Osei Tutu.
*Nkwonwa yere / stool wife is the queenmother ruling side by side with the king. Traditionally, once a king is crowned, the queenmother he rules with automatically becomes his companion and serves him as a wife would do.
[ODO SERWAA] Does Otumfour have children?
[TEACHER K.]Otumfour has six(6) children with his wife, Lady Julia. Because he governs and rules many, all offspring of his subjects are also considered to be his children. Most times, a king is not limited to a specific number of children.

[TEACHER K.] Otumfour has a love for golf thus he mostly spends his mornings playing golf. He loves to read, sing and dance. He loves to dance to his favorite song, ‘Amankwaa Tia’
