    Indian Banks dont allow multiple mobile phone number to use UPI even if there is more than one person in a joint account. That needs to be fixed first.In a E/S joint account, having only primary transact UPI is NOT a feature, it is a restriction.

      Not really. I use HDFC bank account with an overseas mobile number. I get OTP and all other alerts here

      My wife and I have a joint ICICI NRO account with her US number as the primary number. They wouldn’t allow me to add my US number to the account. This is a pain because all the OTPs go to her phone. I had to open a separate individual NRO account in my name with my US mobile number as primary to avoid this problem.

      Yeah, I have an NRI account with ICICI Bank. They allow only one phone number to be linked to my account. Every year I spend part of my time in Australia, UK and India. My Australian number is linked to my account. Roaming is expensive and I don't want to have roaming activated just for the sake of receiving the OTP for occasional transactions. Further when you are on roaming sometimes it takes more than a minute to receive the OTP. But the bank allows you only a few seconds to enter the OTP.
      I have partially solved the problem by linking my Indian local number when I am in India and switching over to my Australian number while in Australia. However the bank doesn't allow me to change my phone number by myself using internet banking, so whenever I am in India the first thing I do is to visit my local ICICI branch to get my phone number changed in the system. I also visit the branch to change the number again before departing India.
      Apparently you can also contact the bank's customer service for phone number change. I was also told that I can get OTP by email if I prefer. But I find all this a real hassle. Even though Indian banks want your money their systems are not set up to cater to the varying needs of NRIs.

    India makes banking for NRIs incredibly difficult. Too many rules and regulations, and way too many restrictions. I don't understand why India makes things so bureaucratic.

    You can not receive money in Rupees with the app in NRO account. One has to do a bank transfer.

    This is not as good as you may think. It costs$10 per day to use my US phone in India. So I borrow a Jio Hotspot and use my US phone in airplane mode while visiting India. My ICICi bank account which has UPI will not work when I put my phone in airplane mode. What will help is to allow Adhar card to OCI holders so we can get an Indian phone number while in India. Adhar is just identification so why not allow that? For me an important benefit is not to carry cash around while in India

    • @OnlineMD
      @OnlineMD 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I used to pay $10 a day to use my Verizon phone in India. So I switched to Spectrum Mobile. Now I pay as I need, a few cents per minute or MB of data. Now, about an Aadhaar card: you have to document a local address in India with proof, need a PAN card, and provide all kinds of information. It is very difficult for an NRI to get an Aadhaar card; trust me, I'm a US Citizen but managed to get an Aadhaar card just so I could get an Indian phone. I now have a Dual-SIM phone with a US number and an Airtel number. You do not qualify for an Aadhaar just because you have an OCI.

    • @AjithKumar-st7jn
      @AjithKumar-st7jn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Aadhar is a residency card. OCI card holders (or even foreigners I think) can take an Aadhar card as per regulations if they have stayed in India for 180 days in the last 365 days . But there are still some procedural issues from UIDAI to be ironed out as I understand. So in practice still needs to wait for that from UIDAI.

    • @Sanjay9442
      @Sanjay9442 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AjithKumar-st7jn Bottomline - Adhar is an identification card - you confirm that you are who you claim to be - that foundation can be used for anything, Adhar card does not give any one any other rights. A foreign resident living in India with Adhar card - does not get right to vote etc.. Having adhar just makes it easy to get an Indian phone, Indian bank account for frequent visitors who do not make the six month requirement. Just like OCI has been allowed - adhar should be allow - when you make life easy - it is good for business

    Too much bureaucracy in India. 😡 Too many holidays for Indian banks.. When NRI goes for say 2 or 3 weeks to India, their banking needs are not completed by the time they depart from India.. For example, we need to make foreign address change, it always takes them at least 4 weeks.. Why so much delay if everything is computerized.. So called premium banks like HDFC, Axis, Kotak bank make lots of mistakes white entering KYC details and then the banks do not allow NRI's to transact until they themselves correct their own mistakes.. Very frequantly the Indian banks make phone calls, which is very annoying, to their NRI customers to sell their products instead of selling their products via email.. Here in USA I have four bank accounts nobody from bank calls me, they send emails instead..
    I AM TIRED OF DEALING WITH INDIAN BANKS AND INDIAN BUREAUCRACY.. 😡 Since I am NRI, I have monetary connection (Because I have parents through whom we inherit money) with India which I can not discard also.

      As far as I know HDFC allows NRIs with overseas mobile numbers to create a UPI id. Initially I also faced the same issue as you did. Please check that your plan allows you to send international SMS, cos that's the only way to verify your mobile number. I was getting error message as well but then I contacted by network provider and activated international SMS and it worked!
