Congratulations on your honey harvest! Your extractor will be well worth the cost. My father had bees for nearly 60 years, he bought a used extractor to get started. That extractor lasted all those years! Sadly, he passed away in August, but my son has taken over his honey business.

Congrats on that wonderful harvest! You can also set your tools and extractor outside, away from the house, and let your bees do most of the cleaning for you first. That way none of the honey goes to waste. My beekeeping neighbor always let her bees help with the clean up.

    All your efforts rewarded.
Honey can disinfect wounds and promote healing. It's not just great for consumption.
Pure honey is expensive. Your vet or community rescues might appreciate.
    Thanks for sharing.

Hi Todd & Rachel. How cool to get honey for harvest. The one thing you forgot Todd was to add Mike thebees. That would have calmed them down. But no, you heated the poor bee 🐝. That is never good. That makes them angry. Next time smoke the bee 🐝, it will calm them. God Bless the bee 🐝 and the honey. Stay healthy my friends. Mari'a. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝💙💙💙💙💙💙❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💙💙💙💙💙

When I had bees I had a larger extractor. Similar but larger. What my husband did was he built a platform (like a pallet with a solid top) to bolt the extractor to. We put the extractor near one side to be able to get a pail under the spigot for the honey. He also left an area under it spaced perfectly for using a hand truck to move it where I needed it. I washed it out in our yard so this way I could easily move it for that. Also the platform made it easy to stand on to keep the extractor from walking all over the place while spinning.
Thanks for sharing it was so nice watching you doing this. I miss my bees so much.

We mounted our extractor to a piece of solid plywood...maybe 3 x 4 1/2 feet. The long side sticks out enough that we can stand on it when the extractor is really out of balance. It's easy to unbolt the extractor from the base/feet for cleaning and storage.

Never kept bees but once every few years when the old Tudor beams shifted through subsidence or uplift, we could place a glass bowl on the dining room sideboard to catch honey dripping through the ceiling. It bypassed the bedroom above. Must’ve crept down the inner walls from rafters then under floorboards. We had bats, too. Goodness knows whether it was contaminated! 😅

We also had a good year for honey here in IN. We too had some very aggressive bees this year. I think the bees were on there A game this year due to the farmers not having all the chemicals they normally have and spray. It's corn and soy fields all around us, and my goodness in years past it seemed like they were constantly spraying something. I think this is our 10th year as beekeepers and it has been our best year. Congrats on a successful harvest.

Todd, get you a piece of plywood or advantech sub floor and make you a fume board. A piece of either board, cover with felt, and staple. Get a commercial spray bottle from lowes because honey bandit, honey b gone or any of them eat through the bottles they come in. Spray on the felt and let sit on hive for about 3-5 minutes. I hardly ever have to use the blower unless a huge hive. Congratulations to you both!

It always feels so good to have a big harvest. We have been checking our hives and they are all so inconsistent this year for some reason. When we have tried to pull there is either to much uncapped or there is brood mixed in. We added our queen excluders for the brood problem so she stopped laying in those boxes but now they don't seem to be fanning as well so it can be capped and we are worried we won't be able to harvest. We are thinking we may just have to pull the boxes to get them down to 2 or 3 for winter and freeze the frames and give them back in spring....

Just bought a 3 frame hand crank extractor (yours is WAY nicer than mine...lol) - I was like you and did the scrape & strain before. I did buy some Honey Bandit - one of the beekeeper youtubers I follow said he liked that one the best as its not as stinky as some of the others. Great job on the harvest!!! I'm waiting for some yeast nutrient to get delivered today - and I'm gonna be starting a batch of mead this weekend!! I will toast to all the girls that made it possible with all their hard work! I'm happy next year I don't have to destroy all their wax when harvesting - so they will be able to make even MORE next year! ;)

The leaf blower is to aggressive if you give a frame a good quick shake over your box it usually gets most of the bees off and you can use a brush for any left set your clean frame in a transfer box the bees will be much happier.

My grandpa used to raise honey bees. He only had 2 hives, but it was so much fun to watch and learn the process. I was kind of nervous when you wanted to use the extractor with the lid off because the honey really does start to fly after a while lol. Are you planning on using the wax caps to make candles at all? I love to watch Jeff Hortchoff Bees. He removes hives from homes, trees, etc and brings them back to the Abbey to set up new hives. He has a team that he works with to extract the honey every season and he also has videos on straining off the wax and he makes big blocks of beeswax with it. Very fascinating process! Congratulations on your harvest this year!
