5 BIG Misconceptions on Vacuum Sealing

- There are many rumors out there on what is safe and not safe to vacuum seal. Just because others have tried something and didn’t get sick doesn’t mean it’s safe. Today Deb tackles 5 of the most common misconceptions of using a vacuum sealer to preserve food.
I got my sealer from Costco years ago and it came with the jar sealer and bottle plug so I lucked out. I don’t buy generic products for my appliances…9 times out of 10 it’s money wasted so a couple bucks extra up front pays off. Great video!
Thanks for sharing!
This video made me feel better about all my stuff I have vacuum sealed..... One thing we learned; you can't vacuum seal any cereal with chocolate in them for long term, they go rancid in a year.... now the "Honey nut Cheerio's and Fruit loops were just as good as the day we packed them into mylar bags and sealed them. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving....Thank you.
I didn’t know that about the chocolate in cereal. Wow. I learn so much from others. Thanks for sharing!
Well dry Celerals,, when repacked and vac sealed. You still want to consider the out of date or best by... from the manufacturer. You are NOT, resetting the lifespan of the product. It might stay fresher and crispy if u re- seal as you consume out of it. But dry stuff will lose flavor integrity. A personal experience with me, was with an Oatmeal container. Factory sealed. But i had it for too long. The product looked fine. But the taste wasnt the same once i cook it. So for certain things. Consider the factory date. That doesnt change just cuz u reseal or vac seal. [ But yes, for sure u can preserve its crispyness and taste like chips. Compared to just folding the factory bag. Just consume the profuct before their factory date is past due. Cooking fresh and canning, vac sealing.. is different. Cuz u know when u made that profuct fresh. And you can date it from the cooking- vaccuming date.
Thank you for sharing that information. I did not realize that.
I absolutely love your content. You have validated everything I have done ,.
You can also use a break sealer to vacuum. (in auto parts) No electricity needed. See "Rain Country "for her video.
I have one. Thanks for watching!
I’ve had 3 food savers over the last 25 years. First one I gave away when we moved across country. The last 2 died suddenly after about 8 years. The sealing part just stopped sealing. The vacuum worked still. I bought a cheaper unit from Walmart. It’s quiet and seals in less time than the food saver at a 3rd of the price. It may not last another 8 years, but it takes-up half the space and works Great. I also have the electric jar sealer that you show here. It is good in a pinch to seal dry goods, and I don’t have to take out the big vacuum sealer for a quick job. Just ordered the larger vacuum chamber vessel so I can use random jars for sealing. Hope that works.
Yep. You have to go with what’s proven to work. My little rechargeable handheld one kicked the bucket. It worked well for a while. I’m searching for a decent one of those. Thanks for your comment.
Again thank you. I did buy the cheap one so now I’ll use my power sealer, because I’m sealing for long time.
I, too, just bought and received the 3rd vacuum sealer you talked about. When you got to the part when you used your fingers to try to pull off the lid, I decided to check my jar that I had just sealed. Lo and behold, it came off! You were right. 😡 I was just about to send it back, but thought, 🤔 I’ll just keep it for the short term sealing, like, your Twix candy bars, because, I can’t just eat one per month. LOL. So, now I’m going to shop for a GOOD one, because I’m getting serious about stocking up and storing. Thank you BIG TIME. I would have never known had I not ‘accidentally’ (there are no coincidences) stopped by your channel.
Oh my goodness. This is the best comment ever! Thanks so much for finding our channel!
Great job as always. How long can you keep flour after the expiration date? Does flour last longer in the refrigerator? Thanks
Sometimes use paper cupcakes for powder!
you may be right, but with each of the the smaller vacumn sealer, it clearly states not to put the food above the ring at the spot the where the jar starts to curve.
My two Mason jar sealers had no directions.
Deb,great review as usual.I have the small hand held sealer besides the big one from Bass Pro.Have told be careful with the hand held one because the tip can get stuck if pushed in too hard and can break off trying to remove it.Happened to me! Also,I’m lucky to have a set of the vacuum canisters that were available years ago and they’re still working fine.Love the bowl you mixed the cereal in.Dose it come with a lid?Nice
Thanks! Good point on the handheld one. I’ll be careful for sure! Yes, that bowl comes with a lid. It’s a three piece set I bought about 5 years ago at Walmart. That’s the biggest bowl. I use it constantly plus the lids latch on. Thanks for your comments!
I use a hand held sealer for my jars and it works Great, better than the food saver. In my opinion I have lost confidence in Food Saver. I suppose it's cheap manufacturing as well as Presto.
Manufacturers have cut corners across the board the last few years. I got my FS about 10 years ago and it is awesome but later models I’m not too sure about so hopefully I won’t have to take that risk. Like sewing machines - older models with mostly metal, made in Japan or Germany are wonderful. The new ones from China are mostly plastic and expensive door stops. My machines are over 30 yo and still going strong 😊
Suggestion: you may want to wipe the edge of the jar with a cloth or paper towel rather than your fingers in case you have oily fingers or lotion on your hand which you may end up transfering to your jar which in turn might affect how well the jar seals.
A couple years ago in our area an older couple died from botulism after eating their canned green beans…I have no idea what the date was on their jars, if the seal had broken, or if they were improperly canned. Botulism is a silent killer.
This isn’t canning. This is vacuum sealing. No botulism involved. Just keeping air out.
For canning I absolutely follow all instructions, including pressure canning. I don’t take any chances with our health or those who watch my channel.
Thanks for your concern. Have a wonderful week.
@ I understand about vacuum sealing 👍🏻 I was commenting about those thinking they can vacuum seal previously canned green beans or corn - wet products and store it for long periods. That is why I mentioned about botulism and the sad story of the elderly couple. Appreciate your post about vacuum sealing and what products may go rancid after many years. ❤️
I dry can cereal in pint jars. This makes 1 bowl of cereal. Canned dry milk to eat it. Dry milk and cereal are pretty good. To just drink dry milk, not so good! Different taste.
Ya know, I think I’m going to shift over to this! I’m the only one who eats cereal. And I’m running out of half gallon jars. But I literally have hundreds of pint ones. I see a future video in the making. Thank you!!!
I do sugar ,powder, dry milk. Everything
Excellent info video
Thank you so much for watching.
My hand held has done me great.
Mine did great for short term.
If you used a lid for canning I heard it cannot be used again for canning. But can it be used for sealing? of will it fail have you tried this? A test for how much vacuum you can pull on each machine is to inflate a small balloon and place it inside the jar. Then compare the size after each seal test. Marshmallow kinda work too.
That is an awesome idea! I’ll try it. I separate my lids, so I don’t know. I can my foods and toss the lid. But with vacuum sealed I store them to reuse over and over again.
I use a brake fluid machine
that way I know how many pounds of pressure I have in my jars
That’s next on my list to try!
Question: you used large jars for your flour. Once you use some flour, do you reseal it or move it to a smaller jar? I guess my question is, does the jar have to be full or can you reseal a half full jar? Thanks!!
@@dianes2300 Great question! If I’m using it quickly, I just put the lid and ring on. We make bread every weekend so it goes fast. But if it’s something like cocoa that I don’t use often, I reseal it. And no, you don’t need a full jar to vacuum seal. Mine are rarely full.
Thanks for watching!
Good vedio i orderd the lids and it came with hose years back hose doesnt fit my machine so ibought 2 of the handheld green one u have no probably yet
I researched a lot before I bought my FoodSaver to make sure it would work with the jar attachments. Is yours a FoodSaver? If so it needs a port. Not all of them have that. The jar sealer attachments I bought are the official FoodSaver ones so I knew they’d fit.
Yes to both questions😊@@JustDoSomethingHomestead
Do you use the food saver brand bags/rolls? If you have used the generic brand bags, did you notice that the air didn’t completely vacate?
At this point, I only use jars. I’ve had my FoodSaver for over a decade and never used the rolls. Our meat is butchered and vacuum sealed for us. So I haven’t really found a need. I’ve even vacuum sealed in jars and then just put the jar in the freezer.
@@JustDoSomethingHomestead ok, thanks! And also for prompt reply!👍
Can I use this method for brown sugar
Personally I don’t. Brown Sugar has a lot of moisture in it. Instead I put it in a jar with my terra cotta bear. You soak the bear in water to keep your brown sugar moist.
❤ hello what model is your foodsaver in this video. There are so many I am confused thanks
Mine is a FoodSaver 5400 series. They sell it on Amazon. Thanks so much for watching!
Ty ❤

Why did you use your fingernails on the first jar you tried to open but not the 2nd one? 😮
I’m not sure what you’re talking about? I tried to open both jars of popcorn with my fingernails.
@@JustDoSomethingHomestead nope
I went back to see what they were talking about. You did in fact use 2 different positions with your fingers on the 2 different jars. The first one you clearly used your fingerNAILS to pry it open. The second jar you used fingerTIPS but did not apply your nails. I was curious because I have the same handheld vacuum sealer & I have not had an issue with the seals breaking. I don’t let it sit for 3 min. I let it go until the unit stops, then I take it off & check the seal before putting it into the pantry or fridge
You did infact use 2 different positions of your fingernails . Fingernails for one and finger tip for the other.
Great video! I'm not sure why you don't want liquid in it? I just vacuum sealed some soup and it worked great.
Depends on your sealer. Many of them can’t seal liquids or it’ll be sucked into the machine and ruined. My foodsaver has a marinate option for liquids.
@JustDoSomethingHomestead I see. Maybe it also depends on the thickness. I do it fairly concentrated and add water when I use it. I also leave about 2 cm at the top of the jar. But my sealer is also a smaller one.
I just got a manual vacuum sealer, and it sealed just fine, you hand pump it. I sealed rice and pasta.
I have one too. For now it’s easier for me to line up jars and seal them with my electric one. Thanks for watching!
Got my jars from goodwill!
@@lornaevans3967 That’s Awesome!
what is project number of mschine. have been trying to find onr like this for 3 months
Mine is the FM5200. They still sell it on Amazon. www.amazon.com/FoodSaver-Automatic-Machine-Express-Certified/dp/B01MDRSCVF/ref=asc_df_B01MDRSCVF&mcid=8b2e28e0e90630468789f09e4db29122?tag=bngsmtphsnus-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80127027900644&hvnetw=s&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=m&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583726553912131&psc=1&th=1
If you water bath can something, then open and use some of the contents, is it safe to vacuum seal the remaining product?
@@myownmasterpiece8788 Are you talking about canned vegetables, fruit, and meats to go on a shelf? It’s a hard no. They are not safe.
@JustDoSomethingHomestead Thank you. I'm new to preserving and always put unused portions in the fridge, but I just wanted to be sure.
I vac seal pasta, rice and my dehydrated veggies.
Sounds great! Thanks for watching.
Can you vacuum seal distilled water to keep the air from contaminating the water for long term storage? I tried it using a handheld brake bleeder with up to a pressure of 20, but don't know how long it will last.
@@davidgasparro2048 I heard you can but I personally have never tried.
My little handheld is more powerful than your brand. It’s worked so well that my seals have never broken on their own. I’m happy with it. It will extend the shelf life of my products more than paper bags or even original packaging with ziplocks. My rechargeable Handheld Food Saver is great, however the bags have failed often. Thanks for your input though.
Hahaha. How do you know yours is more powerful? For long term storage (5 years or more) I use my FoodSaver 5200. In 13 or more years I’ve never had a false seal.
@@JustDoSomethingHomesteadI’m referring to your portable one that you haven’t spoken very highly about but trashed. Hahaha. I’m just saying that jars I’ve used with mine, haven’t broken seal. It’s lightweight and had excellent reviews. I tested it, if it didn’t work to my expectations I’d have returned it promptly. My way long term storage items aren’t vacuum sealed. Vacuum sealed containers aren’t good for 5 years. Choose another method.
Well isn't that a hoot! I just bought the Mason jar sealer and sealed up a 20 lb bag of rice in glass jars. I had a FoodSaver and it crapped the bed.
Do i have to purchase organic only?
Absolutely not. You can vacuum seal any dried foods, organic or otherwise. Organic is the same product without pesticides. I made the switch years ago.
I've looked for the product that is placed in the bag to absorb moisture.
Which one do I purchase.
Im not understanding the differences.
Thank you for responding @@JustDoSomethingHomestead
Pretzels are the worst for going stale and rancid quickly. Other things can stay fresh for years. Not pretzels.
@@marcmarc1967 absolutely. Potato chips go rancid quickly as well. Thanks for watching!
That pop corn jar is overfilled. I have a big foodsaver and love it but not able to keep it on my small counter. I did buy this smaller one this week and will experiment. Want for short term.
Well it’s over 200 days since I sealed that jar with my FoodSaver and it’s still sealed tight.
Would it be good using the jar srew on caps tho sealbthe h are better
I’m not sure what you’re asking. I store my jars with the rings attached. They don’t need to be tightened any harder than normal since the jar is sealed.
Don't agree
You don’t need to.
