@kevinlewallen4778 Jen really outdid herself with the Canadian niceness ( yes that's a word now) and this movie is so heartwarming Remy and his rat buddies are so frigging cute . Another win for Pixar and not surprisingly an Oscar winner too Happy to catch this Happy New Year Cheers mate🎉😊
The music is by the great Michael Giacchino (Ratatouille, Coco, Inside Out, Up, Incredibles, the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, Rogue One, the Star Trek remakes.... on and on). He's tied with John Williams as my favorite film composer. He's also dabbled in directing (Werewolf by Night, which he both directed and wrote the score)
My roommates had a lot of pet rats over the years. They're actually quite affectionate and good about keeping themselves clean. Voice cast was on point: * Janeane Garofalo as Colette * Ian Holm (RIP, Bilbo Baggins) as Chef Skinner * Patton Oswalt as Remy * Brian Dennehy (RIP) as Django (Remy's dad) * Brad Garrett (Ray's older brother on "Everybody Loves Raymond") as Chef Gusteau * John Ratzenberger (in *every* Pixar film) as Mustafa (the waiter) * Lou Romano as Alfredo Linguini Didn't recognize Linguini's VA by name, but his shouty/raised voice is distinctive -- he also played Dash's teacher in "The Incredibles". "Coincidence? I think NOT!"
Hey Jen, Ratatouille is such an amazing and heartfelt movie. --------- I can't tell you enough how much I love this movie. I only watched the film at first because it's a Pixar flick. ---------- I came to enjoy and love the message of hope, passion, and belief in one's dreams. ------ The people at Pixar never fail.
Was in a pet store few years ago and a young woman was just so thrilled that shed just purchased an adorable white rat -- yes it was adorable with little paws that looked like human hands; so cute and adorable, just like you Jen. No, I'm not saying you're a rat, I'm saying you're a wonderfully charming reviewer/reactor-- wishing you a very Happy New Year😃, looking forward to watching more movies with you in 2025!🎉🎉
One of my all time favourite childhood films. They defeat Ego by serving him a humble dish, which reminds him of his mother's cooking, and afterwards, he dresses in more earthy tones, after discovering his "roots."
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this movie, it's simply fantastic, my favorite part is when Linguine catches Rat by surprise cooking the soup, it's very funny 👏👏👏
The story about Anton Ego and his childhood dish of ratatouille is a rewriting of a story by Marcel Proust. Proust was a genius and his works were well known by French people and everyone who love literature one hundred years ago. In his novel, A la recheche du tamps perdu, (Remembrance of Things Past) he describes a moment when he bites into a pastry called a Madeleine, a kind of a tea cake still popular in France. Everything about it instantly recalls the times he enjoyed them in his youth, the sound, the taste, the aroma. Any French person would understand the reference.
Jen, given how you loved this movie, you will love the 1971, “Willard”, and its sequel, “Ben” (which features Michael Jackson singing the theme song). Vote a 👍🏻 to encourage Jen to add this to her long list!
Lol. I was thinking of these 2 films as well after seeing Jen's reaction to this awesome film. Willard and Ben are a totally different vibe, but still very good recommendations!
Hey Jen, the critic's flashback to his childhood also takes me back to the first song I loved and my mom's fresh bread. Such a powerful sentiment is expressed in this movie. Pixar touches us so deeply when we least expect it.
No matter what you review… you’re the greatest MovieTH-camr on planet earth… because you truly cherish and worship movies. That’s so rare. Please stay that way! And tbh: no one plays the „Con Air“ theme Air-Guitar“ like you … and no one imitates the TopGun Maverick theme music so nicely ❤ Happy new year for tomorrow from Germany 🎉
I felt like you did, Jen. I have never seen this movie and I want to see the whole thing now! And, yes, that music was fantastic! Michael Giacchino really smashed it with those great woodwinds. I sometimes get the same way with John Williams' music and I hear a French Horn (I was a French Horn player for many years)! Thanks for the fun!
The voice actor for Remi, Patton Oswalt, is an exceptional comedian and a talented writer and I'm always so happy he gets success (he's had more than his fair share of tragedy). It felt insane hearing he was cast for this and it turned out wonderfully.
I've always been real good when it comes to cooking, i treat it like chemistry in my kitchen as my own little laboratory. I find this film entertaining and the message behind it.
One of the best animated films ever, it is truly a masterpiece. The story was so heartwarming, the animations were absolutely stunning and the music is amazing.
Rats are fantastic pets. Never knew how affectionate they were until I had one. It's hard that they don't live very long. But that's why I have so much respect for people who care for them. Im sorry for your loss, but you gave Professor Beans a good life. Thank you
As an animator I don't think I ever noticed the music. I was busy watching all the animation and effects. Crazy thing is someone online had the actually kitchen scene files from this movie and gave them out. I loaded it up but it was so dense my computer wouldn't handle any more than that.
I see this movie as no less than a masterpiece. Getting me to suspend belief that Remy could do what he does with Linguini, plus the music…C’est magnifique!
Hey Lady! Guess what? I’m 54 and have had two mice as pets when I was young, and as recently as 7 years ago I had two boy rats named Piglet and Tazzy. They were sweet as can be, just like miniature doggies, and very clean like cats. You can train them to use a litter box. They come when you call them and their eyes “ boggle” when they are happy…like a cat purring. Rats are used to sniff out land mines too. They are really, really smart. They live on average about 2 years…sometimes more if you are lucky. I rescued my Tazzy after a snake wouldn’t eat him.
Last video of the year! Thank you so much for a year filled with great reactions, and here's to all the wonderful ones ahead. Your work brightens a lot of people's days. Happy New Year, Jen!
The shadow of the dog towards the start of this movie when Gusto told him to go up and take a look around….that was Gus the golden retriever from the movie UP.
I really get a kick out of how they explain the experience of food and give some glimpses of kitchen culture. Whats even cooler is seeing real-world chefs love this flick.
You brought up the clarinet. Nobody ever mentions the clarinet. It's such a fun instrument. I haven't played in ages, since I let my niece have mine. She gave up band and let it get wet. She gave it back, but I would have to take it to a specialist to be able to play again.
Jen, you said at first that you don't like rats but they are much smarter and more worthy of respect than mice, something I learned while keeping reptiles. I hope that you enjoy these animated rats.
Oh Jen. This is probably the last movie reaction of the year but you should know that YOU put so much joy in our lives. For us you are this beautiful woman, this beautiful human being, so sensitive and so full of life. Wish you the best New Years and long and successful life. Happy New Year Jen 🎉❤
This is such a wonderful and sweet movie, just perfect for a super enjoyable reaction by Jen😊 It's always interesting to hear your opinion about the score of a movie. I had so much fun! Thanks alot ❤
Want to say a massive thankyou to Jen's editor's for all the fantastic edits throughout 2024 🙌 and to Jen for all her wonderful thumbnails they are always fantastic 🔥💙
Loved that movie so much. I love to cook and I did work in a restaurant kitchen. The details are excellent and a real kitchen works just like in the movie.
I initially thought you’d done this reaction already, but then I remembered, “If Jen had done this already she would have definitely carried on about the soundtrack and orchestration and to my memory she did not! Ergo!”
This movie gives me ptsd from my years as a cook in a crazy restaurant... just as an example, when we tried to hire new cooks, we went through several and most of them didnt even stay like 4 hours before quitting lol... and most people think that restaurant is one of the best in the city... but people have no idea how it all runs behind the curtain...
Hey Jen, I and the rest of the movie-watching community had extreme reservations about this movie. Don't get me wrong, if Pixar can meet me like a robot who doesn't talk. A fish that gets lost. ------- Toys that come alive when we're out of the room and a musician who wants to leave Heaven because he has a gig to play. ------- Then who's to say a rat can't be a Michelin chef. I have no doubt that Pixar are Masters at what they do after seeing Ratatouille.
This is definately a top tier Pixar film. Critics flashback, yeah, that can happen. Every time I make recipe's with my late mom's cookbook (and all the hand written recipe's stuck there, that is only real family heirloom in this family), I do get childhood flashbacks.
At a premiere where a large part of the audience was from the restaurant industry, during a break one chef was heard to say "Why did it take a rat for Hollywood to finally get the food right?"
I love this movie. It is this, and Chef, that are my fav food movies. And drama comedies. Chef, with Jon Favreau as a fancy chef not being happy with his life. And Sofia Vergara as his ex from hell, and mother of his son. Well, she seems as the ex from hell at first, but she grows on you. She cares about her son, and his relationship to his father. It also has Dustin Hoffman as the restaurant owner from hell, and Oliver Platt as the food critic from hell. And John Leguizamo and Scarlett Johansson as the best coworkers ever. Robert Downey Jr. is there too, in a minor but important role, as another ex of Sofia's. And she asks him a very important favor. Gary Clark Jr. is there too, when they stop over in Austin, as himself, playing a gig. Great music in that movie, as in this one!
As a pet-rat slave, I can say that they got the rat behaviour down to a T. I've had both a Remy (Picky) and Emile (Greedy and would eat anything). They have such funny personalities, and it's captured so well in this movie 😍😍
Ratatouille is one of my Top 3 Pixar movies (the other two being Coco and Up) - and this is the one that is often overlooked. The animation still looks gorgeous, despite being already 18 years old - i guess the art of animation has not improved that much since. I highly recommend this movie any time because it is a fun and entertaining watch - and you will be definetly hungry after.
This was Pixar's last movie under their initial Disney distribution agreement. It was designed as a film to demonstrate the full range of Pixar's talent when they were looking for a new distributor.
The animators lived with pet rats for a while to get the way that rats move perfected. The little bum wiggle when they walk and run is extremely accurate!
Outstanding reaction, Jen! I love all your videos, but there's something very special about watching animation with you, especially when it comes from genius Brad Bird (Incredibles, Simpsons); I "toast his non-idiocy." Thanks for a terrific, fun time!
I had a pet rat once, I called him Remy because of this movie. Wish he was still here. Also, rats don't have a gag reflex so that soup was so bad it broke the laws of nature.
Honestly, this is a tour de force from Giacchino, but to me my all time favorite of his work will always be where I heard him first: The PlayStation/Sega Saturn video game version of The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997, one of if not the first video games to have a soundtrack recorded by a full orchestra.
I remember when my brother really wanted a pet rat after he saw this in theatres. He begged every day for one and when my mom finally got him one for his birthday, he named it Remy.
Respect the rat. They can tread water for 48 hours, they can digest cinder blocks and eat lead pipes, they can run at 60mph scale, climb nearly vertical surfaces and sprint across power lines.
Clarinet driven score nirvana may very well be The Terminal - composed by John Williams. A Spielberg/Hanks movie. I like the movie a lot better than other people do, but as a clarinet player, the score is out of the world. Even if it is for your own amusement, you should check it out. Emily Bernstein was the lead clarinest who sadly died shortly after from liver cancer. She left behind a masterpiece.
This is so good Jenny but it always makes me hungry, plus it has the wonderful voice of Peter O'Toole as the Food critic Anton Ego old British actor sadly passed away now. ❤
With as much as you love this and other Michael Giacchino scores, have you ever watched LOST? That was where I first noticed him as a composer and he's just gone on to compose some of the most iconic scores of all time, imo.
As a long time kitchen worker I want to point out a tiny detail that is perpetually overlooked. The head chef in the scene between his seeing of the rat via lighted silhouette through the hat and the conversation is his office is a tiny little tell only those who work in kitchens will spot. The chef is so out of sorts and beside himself with stress, he, a chef with decades of experience in a kitchen actually leans against a rolling rack, causing it to shift in an attempt to seem leisurely. No actual chef would do this under normal circumstances.
Salutations JEN , what a great flick to end off the old year and to usher in the NEW year it was so charming and adorable yes you as well JEN 😄 I've worked in a few kitchens myself so i can relate on some level to these antics minus the talking rat . Apparently REMY 's expressions were based on a real chef who was a consultant on this movie ! Wishing you a Happy New YEAR Jen all the best for 2025 🥳🎉🎊❤🥂
Those who don't like rats have never felt the intense love of one. My little Amber defeated many cages in order to come find me for aa cuddle at 3am. She was an intense fireball of determination and affection. Broke my heart into pieces when she died. I'll never forget her 😢
Good evening Jen. There is a sitcom from UK called Fawlty Tower staring John Clese. There is an episode called "Basil the rat." One of the characters, a Spanish waiter named Manuel has a pet rat that he named after the John Clese character, Basil. Anyone the waiter overheard the chef say that he put Basil in the Ratatouille. So funny 😂😂. The whole sitcom will have you laughing out loud. Have a wonderful New Year Jen❤
I played a clarinet made by conn. Mom played flute brother played piano. Muusicial family. I also like the music in this movie. Hello from PA USA 🇺🇸 ❤❤❤
“People in kitchens always sleep together,” THEY DO. And it shifts around so that if you work in a restaurant for over a year you’ve seen everyone sleep with every else. Restaurants and hospitals, I swear to god.
Well, as you know now, the music, once again, is Michael Giacchino. The Blu-ray had an amusing extra about a disagreement with director Brad Bird. Giacchino made some comedy music for the final chase scene, but Brad corrected him. This is not a funny scene. Everything depends on not losing the will. The extras included the same scene with the comedy chase music.
✨Would you eat at a restaurant run by a rat!?

They say ignorance is bliss so maybe I already have 😅 Anyone can Cook so why not 🙂
I quite often share meals with rats and quite often threaten to eat the rats too, they smell like biscuits 🙂
If I hadn’t seen this movie I would have said “no.”
As long as they showered in the dishwasher. 😊
Recommendation: RANGO modern day masterpiece 👌
At 04:55, Jen with the most "Canadian nice" take on rat infestation EVER: "I'm sure they're all very nice but no thank you!"🤣

Voice cast was on point:

The rat-catcher shop is based on a real storefront in Paris. I saw it in person when I was in Paris in the early 90s

Emily Bernstein was the lead clarinest who sadly died shortly after from liver cancer. She left behind a masterpiece.
7:35 And it's Doug, 2 years before Up! :)
Every time with you is a good time. I love your comments 👍🏻😊👍🏻
Imagine if Chef Skinner was replaced with Gordon Ramsay in this movie. There would be a lot of audio censorship.
At 4:58 .. 😅 " I know they are all very nice but NO THANK YOU ! .." Jen s reactions is the best..😅😅 We have so much fun with you Jen.
This is so good Jenny but it always makes me hungry, plus it has the wonderful voice of Peter O'Toole as the Food critic Anton Ego old British actor sadly passed away now. ❤
My all time favorite animated film!
With as much as you love this and other Michael Giacchino scores, have you ever watched LOST? That was where I first noticed him as a composer and he's just gone on to compose some of the most iconic scores of all time, imo.
Domesticated rats can be utterly adorable pets. They are friendly, love to play... and enjoy being tickled.
The main downside is just that they don't live long enough.
Don't they famously laugh when they are tickled?
@captainchaos3667 Yes, it's ultrasonic, so outside human hearing range.
Salutations JEN , what a great flick to end off the old year and to usher in the NEW year
it was so charming and adorable yes you as well JEN 😄
I've worked in a few kitchens myself so i can relate on some level to these antics minus the talking rat .
Apparently REMY 's expressions were based on a real chef who was a consultant on this movie !
Wishing you a Happy New YEAR Jen all the best for 2025
🥳🎉🎊❤🥂
You got emotionally attached to a rat sooo quick hahaha. Great video
Weekend at Bernie's remark is not to far off ... Remember this movie when you watch it 😆
“People in kitchens always sleep together,” THEY DO. And it shifts around so that if you work in a restaurant for over a year you’ve seen everyone sleep with every else. Restaurants and hospitals, I swear to god.
This is my favorite Pixar movie
Thanks ❤❤
Well, as you know now, the music, once again, is Michael Giacchino.
The Blu-ray had an amusing extra about a disagreement with director Brad Bird. Giacchino made some comedy music for the final chase scene, but Brad corrected him. This is not a funny scene. Everything depends on not losing the will. The extras included the same scene with the comedy chase music.
