As a quarterback, it's really important that you understand defensive pass coverage and what teams are trying to do to you.

Also, give me a thumbs up if you love playing a position a quarterback or give me a thumbs up if you're a coach, and you're learning something here on the site. If you have a question, please put it in the comment section and I'm happy to answer it. You need to understand what teams are trying to do to you on defense.
Every team in America has cover 3 in their defensive playbook. It is a standard operating scheme, from high school to peewee through college and the NFL. Every team has it. And so you have to understand what it is you have to know where the weak spots are and what the strengths are, and especially what routes you use to beat cover three as a quarterback. If you understand those concepts and how to beat it, then you're a lot better off. So I'm going to take a page from my NFL playbook back when I played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Cover 3 is three defenders in deep zones. So each one has a third of the field. Over the top cover 3 is a good coverage to stop the deep ball.
Underneath, you have four zones. Cover 2 is five men under with 2 men deep so a little more space in the vertical game in terms of deeper routes, but less space underneath because you have five underneath. So cover 3 has more space underneath than there is in cover 2.
    Variations of Cover 3:
Cover three sky - the reason they call it Sky is the safety is where this coverage is rotating to. So the strong safety in this case has the flat zone. You always designate who has the flat zone To the rotation side so the sky in this case is because the strong safety has the rotation down to that flat zone.
The weak points for a quarterback to attack are flat coverage weak side if you have a linebacker lined up on the inside and teams will do this because they're trying to keep as many men in the box as possible for run support. But if you have a weak linebacker lined up inside and he's trying to fly to get out of the flat after reading run or pass, the flat is a wide open space to throw to.
Cover 3 Cloud: Rolls coverage to a rolled up corner and Strong Safety takes a deep 3rd. Can be run strong or weak. Corner roll side takes away flat but potentially opens up hook/curl zone to that side.
Cover 3 Invert: Free Safety Covers flat and Strong Safety takes deep middle third.
Same rules as strong roll but to weak side with the Strong Safety and Free Safety switching assignments.
    Effective Routes vs. Cover 3:
Out routes, stop (curl) routes, hitch routes are all really good, slant, slant shoot combination. Comebacks, and go routes if you have a mismatch. 4 vertical, and 3 level flood routes are also extremely effective.
4 vertical is a great play versus cover 3 because you are trying to stretch that free safety I always like to have a check down in it, hold the backers or if they fly out you can hit that check down.
There's a ton of different options to beat cover three, because there's only four guys underneath. It creates passing lanes inside that you can throw the ball into as a quarterback. And so the key is understanding the defender that you're trying to stretch that and creating routes that affect that defender.

It's tough against the run and so that's why a lot of defenses love playing cover 3 it's also a great way to disguise and get into cover 1. I like how this was presented with a 3-4 front. Normally when I see presentations on Cover 3 it's usually paired with a 4-3 defense(many people use the Seahawks Cover 3 with a 4-3 under front as an example). Nice work.

Traditionally the 3- 4 was the cov 3 front. The 4-3 really becomes a 4-4 when you go with cover 3. The SS can become a box player and strong run support.
