- When making a more limited game in a series known for its intense multiplayer action and realistic 3D-environment it’s always best to look back on the earlier games and take inspiration from their design and gameplay and reinvent them to fit more ideally with the handheld in mind. This was true for many games and ports on the Game Boy Advance library, but the one that stands out the most for being unique in its own right and being the earliest example of such practice was Mario Kart Super Circuit, the third installment in the Mario Kart series. Despite this, its effectiveness in putting in this practice has been met with mixed reception, some calling it one of the greats in the series and others calling it the worst of the bunch, so which is it really?

I Adore this game
this is my least fav mk game and Ive played them all. Ive 100%ed all except this and wii, which Im almost done with. I main toad in sc and they punish u for using certain characters. the ones that reward u control like ass. I might even have to shave down the dpad just to get more miniturbos to get 3 stars. far from a masterpiece.

I 100% agree with everything in this review. I feel this is a horribly misunderstood Mario kart game. I really enjoy the track designs especially, which is why I'm glad they are finally re using some of the more iconic GBA tracks in recent games. I also love the crazy short cuts and see it as a massively suped up version of smk which didn't age well and even prefer it to 64.
I feel if the multiplayer was more accessible then people will have appreciated it more. Thankfully it's on the switch online service with online support now. Only took 22 years!😅

This game is definitely the most chaotic and random mario kart ive ever played. Definitely my favorite, so much so that i made a video on it while on drugs 😂 great video lito, i love it!! You went over everything anyone would need to know about this game. I was waiting for you to mention shortcuts and the bridges and im glad you did. And the ending the with the credits was done amazingly love your editing too
One thing you missed about the BS of the ranking system in this game is it is character dependent. Each character has point boost you get just for playing that character (except Yoshi for some reason) and Bowser has the highest. Meaning it is actually easier to get 3 star ranks if you play Bowser and way harder if you are playing as Yoshi.
To be brutally honest, Super Circuit was the first game with truly great tracks. The visuals have a charming atmosphere and the layouts are challenging. I feel a lot of the charm of the charm has been lost in the more recent Tour/8DX remakes.
What? The Super Circuit remakes have consistently been some of the best tracks in MK8

Definitely not; it’ll always be one of the weaker ones solely due to its flat tracks. But it’s still incredibly underrated and far better than SMK and 64.
While I prefer Double Dash and Super Mario Kart, Super Circuit is far better than the community claims, and I respect your opinion.

Something to add for EXTRA Lightning Cup, MC3 sand won’t count as off road and CI2 dirt doesn’t affect ranking just the mud pool. The SC are easier ones to get 3 Stars because of more coins and item boxes, coins do matter in your ranking and you do get points by collecting item boxes when the item slot is full.
I really appreciate the Quick Run option that just lets you play a track for the hell of it without it needing to be Time Trial or Grand Prix. Also, with this being the first in the series to have retro courses, having all of the Super Mario Kart tracks, albeit with the Super Circuit design, almost feels like getting two games in one.
Great video on a great game. I would suggest though to put a low pass filter on any clips with a CRT tv running because of their... uhh... signature pain inducing screech. I'm eagerly waiting for the day that I no longer feel the pain from them.
A long car rides companion. There are less item blocked than other entries so you have to fight for those items.
I had this game and I honestly don't remember playing it _that_ much, but I must have because I recall having the retros and the sunset title screen unlocked lmao. The gameplay mechanics aren't necessarily my favorite for a Mario Kart game, but I think the visual style of Super Circuit is extremely pleasing.
I have a theory that the Fake Item Box was removed since it would've been impossible to see the difference on the original screen.

I really enjoyed this game and never really understood the hate. It must be the same people who hate super Mario kart because it’s hard. My only complaint about this game are the audio clips. I would have preferred the US version of MK64 voices over the Japanese versions. Luigi on particular sounds just awful
Pretty much. People pick these games up, play it for 5 seconds, realize it not only plays differently from modern MK but also has an immense skill ceiling, and write it off as "poorly aged". It's a disservice to these titles!
You have no idea how many videos I've seen that shit on the drifting systems of these games, calling it "pretty much worthless" It's like, bro, you haven't even played the fucking game to discover its ins and outs! Try holding that drift to its completion and break away properly to get that speed boost like a boss. THEN you can call it worthless. You'd still be wrong, but at least you tried!
It probably shouldn't upset me this much, but hearing the same robot opinions about these 2 gems on just about every SMK/Super Circuit video is really goddamn frustrating. All it takes is a few big names with no understanding of these games' mechanics to say "It's shit" and now nobody gives them the respect or esteem they deserve. I hope they blow up someday like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon did.
Also, yes, Luigi's voice is ass in this game LOL. MK64 voices ftw.

@@triple7marc I respect your opinion but I think 64 is better. What I meant was how mode 7 worked (like smk) how if the land gets far enough it looks like a mess of pixels
Loved this game as a teen! I know it’s not everyone’s fav but it’s actually one of my more favored Mario Kart games. When you only get a handful of games a year you really dig deep into them and that’s what I did with this one!
Broken pier's main gimmick was the little bridges, if you found them, you would get a massive shortcut, but boo lake has one and it's not that good (also the first broken pier hidden bridge isn't good either)
I can't control this game, more than any other Mario Kart. I have difficulty with both Super and 64 as well, so maybe this really is a combination of both. I'm glad people can enjoy it though, even though I've consistently been unable to.
While I don't think the game is better than 64, I must admit the game is heavily underappreciated. I haven't played all the tracks, but the ones I have played were really fun! I am fortuanate enough to have played the game with a friend, however, it was only single-pak. My main issue is the controls, since, for me, are bit slippery, and drifting feels like a major downgrade from Mario Kart 64. Still, this game holds up and would definitely reccomemd to other people! Great video!
Super Circuit may not have the best visuals or gameplay, but you can get used to it and actually enjoy it. The best things about the game are definitely the original concepts behind the tracks (like, the game has some of the uniquest track themes in the whole series) and the music (it's better that Mario Kart DS' music imo, they used better instruments sacrificing the sound quality for full length samples and the compositions themselves are great) It's an underrated game but as someone that really appreciates it, i can understand why others may not like it

Making the unlockables a grind is smart, give you more of a reason to keep playing. I mean the fact that you are booting up the game means you want to play it.
Nostalgia for me, I never owned a Nintendo 64, it was simply never in the family house (PS2/Xbox’s mainly), but I DID own a Gameboy color, and this game kept my young ass busy on numerous vacations

Predictions for GBA tracks in MK8?
My predictions:
Wave 4: GBA Bowser Castle (Each lap represents a variation, not 4, sorry)
Wave 5: Sunset Wilds
I think Sunset Wilds might be confirmed since it's a Tour track but out of any of them? Probably it's rendition of Rainbow Road, especially in the like of Mario Kart 8's graphics.
Hope they add riverside park. Maybe not a very popular choice but I like it.

The multi player complaint isnt fair, sure it’s complicated and expensive, but how else would you make it work. It’s old tech before Bluetooth, wifi. Hell, even the psp which is more modern still requires both people to have the game. I just don’t know how you expect a multi player experience on a portable GBA to not need all these accessories.

It doesn't have multiplayer though. Mario kart DS is so incredibly fantastically amazing that it just barely is able to hold up despite that, but with this one, idk
