Speaking of Frank Zappa, "Watermelon in Easter Hay" is maybe the most beautiful guitar solo song I've ever heard. It absolutely lifts me to another place.
Wow that Derringer boy album! Took my head clean off...I wouldn´t given it a chance looking at the cover but You praising it made me play it and I'm glad I did. Great album Thx Phil!
For some reason I never dipped into WASP's catalogue until recently, buying Double Live Assassins. I enjoyed that so I will give give The Crimson Idol a listen.
Wonderful video, Phil! It's always refreshing when someone is doing a ranking/choosing favorites etc and they give actual background and reasoning for their choices rather than just the standard "it's just such a cool riff" routine. It's also great to hear Technical Ecstasy getting some recognition as well! Try as I might, I can't seem to get into Zappa much beyond Hot Rats and the like ... not sure if my level of musical sophistication just isn't up to par or what, but I struggle with much of his work that I've been exposed to. One of these days ...
Love ALL AMERICAN BOY...still have the LP given to me on Xmas, 1973. Framed in my music room. Love the fact that Bobby Caldwell is on it (Johnny Winter And, Captain Beyond). "Jump, Jump, Jump" is a dark tune that comes off lije a Pop song. 😊
Amazing! I only discovered Roy Buchanan last night! Saw him covering “Hey Joe” and I’ve been streaming his first three albums over the last 24 hours. He used very few FX pedals and manipulated his tone knob for wah wah. “No Quarter” first edit 👌. Honourable mention also for “Ten Years Gone”, typical example of how Page as lead guitarist serves the song . Every budding guitarist should hear any version of “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reid” and Zappa’s “Watermelon In Easter Hay”. Iommi’s “You Won’t Change Me” is for me his most emotional. Billy Gibbons? I’ll take anything from “Deguelo”.
Wow...back in the '70s, the self-proclaimed Clapton down-the-street hipped us kids to Roy Buchanan. "Hey Joe" was ridiculous! My HS garage band covered "Treat Her Right". IIRC, The Stones approached RB to replace Mick Taylor. Danny Gatton was another monster player...similar vibe (maybe), same tragic fate.
Oh, yeah...just remembered a Roy Buchanan interview in GUITAR PLAYER magazine. RB sez he may have been the 1st to ever record a pinch-harmonic...and it was a mistake. 😊
Hi Phil, there are three solo's which I have always thought were amazing and still do ; the track "The Actor" played by Dave Lambert on the Dave Cousins album 'Two weeks last summer' , Sammy Hagar on the track "Young Girl Blues" from his 'Live' album and finally Bernie Marsden's solo (RIP) on the track "Fascination" on the Babe Ruth album 'Stealin Home'
I really enjoy Billy Gibbon's guitar playing....it's not flashy nor fast, but the notes are always in exactly in the right places, and his use of space and feel are just so wonderful.
Hi Phil, I was excited about your choice of Zappas Zoot Allures. My first one after Sheik Yerbouti and Zappa in New York (a true gem as well) Zooz Allures surely deserves more attention ad it is often overseen in the Zappa catalogue. Great guitar work indeed, not only on black napkins but also on thehaunting torture never stops. I dont quite remember but the cover setting seems to show musicians even not playing on the album as his kind of take on the music industry.Cheers from Germamy Klaus
@@jogischulz2576I own Hot Rats & One sie on vinyl. Great one. I need definetely get roxy & elsewhere some time. Firstly I will go for 50th anniversary of overnite sensation.
You've got some eclectic tastes but that's cool. ZZ Top Rough Boy for me and most don't see that. I was there from ZZ's first. Saw them in 75 so....But you could add 30-40 others. Cool. Hooking up with Pete too. Across the pond indeed. My boss played Roy's Hey Joe in 79 and he rocked but well, I got my favorites too. It really came to be in the late 60's and got too silly with yngwie. But he had some great bits when not over playing too.
My ten favourite guitar solos: Micky Llewelyn (Hustler) - "Miranda" (from "High Street"). Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep) - "The Spell" (from "Demons and Wizards"). Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple) - "Burn" (from "Burn"). Andy Scott (Sweet) - "Fountain" (from "Level Headed"). Leo Kottke - "Vaseline Machine Gun". David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - "Comfortably Numb" (from "The Wall"). Brian May (Queen) - "Bohemian Rhapsody" (from "A Night At The Opera"). . George Harrison (John Lennon) - "How Do You Sleep" (from "Imagine"). Lindsay Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) - "Go Your Own Way" (from "Rumours"). Joe Walsh (Eagles) - "Hotel California".
*5 favorite "Pre-1980" guitarists* Jimi Hendrix (Experience) Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple/Rainbow) Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath) Alex Lifeson (Rush) Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen/Van Hagar) *5 favorite "1980+" guitarists* Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) Kirk Hammet (Metallica) Johnny Marr (The Smiths) Dave Navarro (Janes Addiction) Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains)
From Australia , would have Ritchie Blackmore on anything from Deep Purple's MADE IN JAPAN what an ass kick live album , also Alvin Lee from Ten years after's Live at the Fillmore East , the U.K.s two greatest Rock guitarists no question about it , Peace from down under.
Unbelievable Phil! I was only discussing great guitar solos with my dad this morning and told him he needed to checkout Witness by Winger! What a coincidence? Spooky! Another great show 👍
Reb Beach is such an awesome player. He took a sideline in Whitesnake just to be in the band. But straight from the first Winger album he was so impressive. You picked the right solo here though, Phil. It just builds and builds until you don't want it to end. Great work.
With Roy Buchanan, check out Loading Zone. Big fan of all of his stuff. Rick Derringer has a great live album. Beyond the Universe cranks and Sitting by the Pool is a favorite. Good call on Tony Iommi, as an OG Sabbath fan. Would absolutely crank and sing along with that in my car.
LOADING ZONE has a stellar cast of Jazz Fusion guys backing up RB. Stanley Clarke, Narada, Jan Hammer...Will Lee, Duck Dunn, David Garibaldi, etc. Different than his earlier Blues albums.

In memory from wipe the windows is immense. So jazzy. Love it Phil. Great choice

Good call on the Iommi solo ! ...
I've always loved that one ( along with the rest of the album ) .
