      @@laylowxalex the reality is PR is the wealthiest Latin American “country”. If they became independent their economy and living standard would collapse. Remember the US spend a lot of investment to make PR better and wealth is tied to many US businesses in PR. Remember unlike their neighbors PR does not have any real natural resources or geographic advantage. Even worse PR government is both corrupt and incompetent.
      The fact becoming independent would be the worst they could do. By becoming a state PR would have the reverse happen and a huge amount of investments would be made to improve their lives.

  • @lostlegend1717

    Puertorican here!!! Pretty accurate, boricuas see themselves different from americans but think that being under US control is actually not a bad thing. Of course there are different opinions; a pro independence movement; but the majority is ok with US handling the important stuff, we don't trust our politicians and for good reasons.
    One thing that is not in the video and very important is that we don't see races as US see races. The majority of puertoricans see themselves as tri-racial a mix between African-Spanish and Taino Heritage. Also if you ask a boricua is he is white or black he will be uncomfortable with the question specially younger generation because if one mark white one may fill that is not honoring the african and taino roots. I took that example because light skin boricuas are more common than dark skin boricuas. There are some new afro-puertorricans movement but these are more about embracing blackness than actually calling for creating a new type of ethnicity since most of African culture is embedded in puerto-rican culture. Almost all music of PR have african roots.
    Also you should do a Video of only PR!

      In truth PR is the wealthiest per capita Latina American “country” in the world. This has directly to do with being a US territory investing into the country and US businesses in PR.
      If PR became independent their economy would collapse because PR US businesses would leave and at the same time a massive amount of PR would leave to the US if it became independent. PR does not have natural resources it’s neighboring islands have and does not have any special geographic advantages. Theirs success directly has to do with being a US territory.
      On the other hand if they became a state their economy would increase massively with the influence of investment. While PR are the highest per capita in Latin America they are only half that of the US. This means the US federal government in addition to private investment would have to spend a lot of resources to impre the lives of PR. They would be forced to in order to get presidbelty votes.
      Basically the Lives of PR would massively improve if they became a state and their society would bordering collapse if they became independent

    • @lostlegend1717
      @lostlegend1717 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AL-lh2ht Not entire true, US invested in PR long before colonization, there were a lot of US business in PR in the Spanish era. The invasion of PR was no brainier to USA, if PR left USA, probably US multinational will continue investing in PR and maybe more because they would not need to follow all the industrial federal regulation like what happen in Mexico a lot of companies are moving to Mexico because have less regulations. PR probably will be a US puppet state serving US interest. PR will not fall in socialism/communism that just fearmongering non-sense. PR always have been a right-wing-quasi-libertarian state, nationalization of property only occurred under US occupation, but since PR autonomy, PR have been selling everything to the private sector. For example the electric utility operation was sold to Luma energy (private sector). US and EU investment in PR made PR rich and no other Caribbean nation, but that only because of PR political/social stability. No civil wars, no political uprising, always deliver on time. PR have more political/social stability than any other country in the Americas that is good for business. Take for example other US-ex-colonies, they didn't have stability so they have to go. PR is always playing the long-game.

    Interesting little side note for you Geograpeeps: The NMI is a great place to see World War II relics and sites scattered across the three inhabited islands of Saipan (pronounced "Sai-Pan" not "Sai-Pawn"), Tinian, and Rota. The other islands are largely uninhabited due to being active volcanic islands...Also, there are only 4 municipalities - Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and the Northern Islands Municipalities (sorry, Barbs).

    I'm from Guam, the info you gave is spot on! The only thing that we would have controversy with would be Micronesians. Our lineage is a bit different from the rest of Micronesia. As native descendants, we call ourselves Chamorro. This came about after the Spanish colonized the island. The word Chamorro is what the Spanish called our male ancestors with mostly shaven heads and a pony tail. So we don't really know what our ancestors called themselves prior colonization.

    • @jasonsan6708
      @jasonsan6708 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But we are still Micronesians though. In Saipan and the rest of the NMI we Chamorros id as micros not bcoz of any political boundaries but bcoz we are Pacific Islanders from the region known as Micronesia. Just bcoz our lineage is different from our other neighbors doesn’t mean we should not be considered Micronesians
