The rotating flat is often the first opening new players learn. Here we look at how it fits into Othello strategy.

Thank you so much for your videos, they're really helping me think more strategically having struggled initially having only recently started learning. It's a fascinating game. I'm a little confused on one matter however... In the early videos you discussed the importance of flipping interior discs, and splitting opponents discs, however in this video (5, flat theory) cutting through other players' discs is seen as undesirable, and keeping to our own side of table preferred. Both approaches makes sense to me... I'm just wondering whether there are any particular scenarios, or stage of the game where it would be considered beneficial to cut through the middle of the opponent's discs? I would be very grateful to hear your thoughts. Thanks

How complex, advanced and sophisticated is the game of othello compared to other games like checkers, chess, pool checkers, lines of action, Chinese Chess, Turkish checkers, Breakthrough, and all the other board games played on a 8x8 board?
How much time of thinking and strategy is involved in othello?

What is this opening called? I couldnt hear too well bc the music. Also, interesting and confusing to a newb like me like someone mentioned earlier that the strategy here is to go around the edges and stay on your own side rather than cut across the board. Per your previous episodes where you perf to cut inner discs as to outside discs …. Hmmm 😅

Othello has been played on 8x8 and 10x10 boards for quite a while now.
Pro for 10x10 is that there aren't programmes of the same strength as there are for 8x8 meaning its harder to learn openings and there are more moves to make, which means more mistakes to make, which means more creative games
A con in my opinion though is that 10x10 loses some of the subtle complexities in edge play that make it slightly less interesting to play/watch.

I would argue that Othello is ever bit as complex as all of the games you mention. In my experience of other games, which is limited there is only one game that is way more complicated than any other and that is Go.
Usually Othello is played in tournaments with each player getting 30 minutes each.
