Over the years there have been entertainers that were versatile and multi-talented and could sing, dance and act. The difference with Julie Andrews though is that she did all these things to the highest standard and at the very highest level. She was never over shadowed by anyone - whether singing with Andy Williams, dancing with Gene Kelly or acting with Christopher Plummer. A true legend and as well as being beautiful and a genuinely nice person.
Lots of people think that she dubbed Audrey Hepburn while the dubbing was actually done by Marni Nixon who also dubbed Deborah Kerr in King and I and Natalie Wood in West Side Story.
This was from 1973 on the Julie Andrews hour and I can remember the original-I was 17 and never forgot it-I was so thankful to find it on You Tube :) also the closing song called Time is My Friend I fell in love with too- this special effect was one of the first times this was ever done having all 3 on one screen. Simply magnificient !!!
Wow! That gave me tingles! She was so stunning and her voice was just incredible! Even now that she is approaching 80, she still has this grace and elegance that mere mortals can only dream of.
It's Julie...using multiple video recordings...the footage was rather ahead of its time for 1970's TV, and there are flaws, like one of the characters not having a shadow. But the process wasn't new. Gisele MacKenzie did it on her 1958 "Gisele MacKEnzie Show" on NBC-TV where she played violin, piano and sang at the same time via film.
isnt it interesting how show acts different with each character but makes it look so easy! eliza is all slouched and not at all elegant but mary is very dignified yet her as herself is different yet again. if you didnt know it was the same person you wouldnt be able to tell
Julie Andrews popularity is everlasting. Her perfomance in both Princess Diaries movies proves her elegance and charming talent in singing and acting is popular with teens yet today. Those of us who grew up with Poppins and The Sound of Music are grateful that she is still acting. JuneBug
Thankyou Walt Disney for creating Mary Poppins into a movie and thankyou Julie Andrews for accepting the role. Without these two Mary Poppins would not be my favourite movie and Julie Andrews would not be my idol in the first place
I LOVE Julie: The feet - look at the little details! Eliza in, Mary out, Julie normal. "Spoonful of sugar to help my fist go down". "Knickers!" I would love to know how they did this for the 70's. Surely this has been touched up... I mean look at those shadows and the smoke around 2:15 and 6:15 How?!
This is GREAT! I loved seeing her and two of her characters together like this. Too bad that she couldn't have included Maria Von Trapp and Victoria Grant in there as well! But then she didn't do "Victor Victoria" until a decade after this. And I guess she chose Mary and Eliza because they were both London character and complete opposites. Very well done and Julie has always been so very beautiful and multi-talented!.
I love how she at 5.17 keeps her feet different with echt character. Her own are normal, Eliza's are with the toes to eachother and Mary's with the heels together :D Clever.
Glad I found this! Just loverly! What's interesting to me in the Julie vs. Audrey debate for MFL is that Julie herself said she never felt she got the Cockney accent right, and she played the role on Broadway for 2 YEARS and even had coaching in it by a phonetics professor! If I could have my way, I'd have the movie musical played by Julie with Audrey's voice dubbed in for the Cockney parts. Hah.
I love Julie Andrews :) The first film I ever remember seeing was The Sound of Music and I wanted to be a nun for years - ha ha! Fantastic clip. Thanks so much for posting.
That was the sweetest comment ever. Hey, at least Julie got the Oscar, which was the academy's way of saying yes, she should have played Eliza in the movie. One can't hate on Hepburn ever because she's a great person.
Is there any star of stage and screen working today for whom something like this would be attempted? This is amazing and really illustrates the impact that Julie made on the entertainment world in a very short stretch of time.
Great idea...this worked for Jane Froman fans, who FINALLY got the fantastic film bio of her life, "With a Song in My Heart," out on DVD, after the 1950's move sat in the vaults with NO home video release until late 2007!
I really love this video... Julie you are amazing! I adore you ;) and I hope Eliza and Mary will someday get on well :p because they are both very nice!!! 'course I did dear ;)
I agree with irartist. I too love Julie Andrews and her wonderful magical voice. Thank you Julie for sharing your voice with the world. You are so wonderfully talented, and we Love you!!! John and Byron
If only Julie Andrews had a chance to play both Mary Poppins and Eliza Doolittle in films at a different time back in the 60s. As a great fan of her, I wanted Julie to play Eliza in the film version as well; that would mean she had no chance to play Mary Poppins.
Dios! OMG this woman is the best person in the world, I love her a lot! My favorite actress and my idol! Thanks Julie for all of your movies, tahta are wondeerful, QUEEN CALRISSE, MARY POPPINS, ELIZA DOOLITTLE, etc.
She is THE most amazing actress/singer ever!! Its a pity she wasn't choose to do "My Fair Lady" but on the bright side she did Mary Poppins that year and won the Oscar!!! So, how's the greatest now?? LOL

I love how she changes always the position of her feet to get into the character. :)
"They made a movie?" That settles it...Julie is Queen....QUEEN I SAY!
A much better queen than Elizabeth, wouldn't you say?
Darling, that goes without saying!
aaliyonce Who, Julie or Elizabeth?
Julie Andrews is a legend, pure class, a great actress with an angelic voice.
"Saucy baggage!"
"Baggy sausage!"
LOL! Oh Julie, how cute are you?
Best line! :D
IrishEyes1989 I remember seeing this the first time it aired, and I always remembered that exchange between Mary and Eliza. Great use of a Spoonerism!
the mary-eliza fight is hilarious!!!
"i made her a stage star" "I made her a MOVIE star"
hehehehe

"Saucy little baggage!" "Baggy old sausage!" That is a very good comeback xD Love Julie Andrews! She makes me happy every time I see her.
"Yes, she's very clever. She can fly."
"Well so can an 'airy-plane." That made me BURST out laughing! xD
She covered her mouth because she made Eliza's cockney "Aaoooooowww" sound, which was an un-Poppins thing to say.
This is actually the best thing ever.
Maria Von Trapp should have been there....
would have been GREAT... but this was around 64-65, she was quite possible still filming The Sound of Music when this show aired...
Absolutely brilliant! Julie is one of the most wonderful people ever. She's a World Treasure!
isnt it interesting how show acts different with each character but makes it look so easy! eliza is all slouched and not at all elegant but mary is very dignified yet her as herself is different yet again. if you didnt know it was the same person you wouldnt be able to tell
This is from "The Julie Andrews Hour", Julie's own variety show that aired for 24 episodes in 1972/'73.
I swear I'm in love with this woman
That's what you call 'talent'
Julie Andrews popularity is everlasting. Her perfomance in both Princess Diaries movies proves her elegance and charming talent in singing and acting is popular with teens yet today. Those of us who grew up with Poppins and The Sound of Music are grateful that she is still acting. JuneBug

Oh the high note at the end! Julie, you are the best! yesterday today and tomorrow!
