  • Recorded on Sunday August 19, 1995 - I grabbed my camcorder and took my 13 year-old nephew to Musikfest. This was my favorite decade for Musikfest. It still felt like a local event, and the free concerts at Kuntzplatz were simply amazing! I saw Tom Jones, Ray Charles, The Fifth Dimension, America...
Musikfest is an American music festival that has been held annually since 1984 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It claims to be the nation's largest non-gated free music festival. Each year, thousands of visitors and residents of Pennsylvania make the trip to Bethlehem to participate in a celebration that weaves through a Moravian community that dates back to 1741. Festival visitors are treated to hundreds of free shows over the course of the event as well as ticketed shows on larger stages. Local German roots are the foundation of the celebration, and most of the festival's venues use Platz, the German word for place or square, at the ends of their names. A popular place for eating and listening to music, for example, is the large "Festplatz," which includes 300 dining tables, and usually features a polka band each night. Beyond that, however, Musikfest's music, food, and other attractions represent a broad range of ethnicities. Musikfest is presented by ArtsQuest, a nonprofit arts organization founded to "celebrate arts and culture" in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Proceeds from the event benefit ArtsQuest ventures such as the Banana Factory community arts center in South Bethlehem, as well as other nonprofit groups throughout the region.

Omg I was born at St. Luke's hospital May of 1995 - it is so cool to see what the town looked like when I was 3 months old!!

A great stroll through the past! So cool. I moved here in 1997; I had always heard of the "Orr's" building but never saw pictures - it's amazing how much it changed in just 2 years from your video. :) Thanks for sharing!

You are welcome! I lived in Bethlehem for 19 years, starting in 1990, and loved each day of it.

Great video! I long for those days again. This was one year before I moved to Phoenix, AZ and as you say, it felt much more like a local event than it does today (pre-Covid). I'm back in PA now, and I don't care as much for the event as I did back then. Thanks for the memories!!! :-)

Amazing to think that whoever was 25 in this video is now 50...whoever was 50 is now 75...and whoever was 75 is now 100 years old. Time flies.

I just realized the brass band was playing “When I’m 64” and I am 64! I was 38 when I shot this!

I lived right on Garrison St where the Washington Hotel was. I remember the night that burned down very vividly. I thank you so much for uploading this piece of Bethlehem history!

You are welcome! That must have been a scary moment when that burned. It's fun to see Bethlehem during a simpler time. Oh how I loved living there in the 1990s.
