The Blizzard of 1996 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

  • I took this footage in north Bethlehem, around the Moravian College area. From Wikipedia: The North American blizzard of 1996 was a severe nor'easter that paralyzed the United States East Coast with up to 4 feet (1.2 m) of wind-driven snow from January 6 to January 8, 1996. This storm was a classic example of a nor'easter, but the storm would not have been as historically significant without the presence of the arctic high-pressure system located to the north of New York. It was followed by another storm, an Alberta Clipper, on January 12, then unusually warm weather and torrential rain which caused rapid melting and river flooding. Along with the March Superstorm of 1993 and the January 2016 United States blizzard, it is one of only three snowstorms to receive the top rating of 5, or "Extreme", on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale (NESIS).

I was 24 and coming home from Potter County Pa , we were up there on a snowmobile trip. We couldn't get home so we unloaded the snowmobiles , parked the truck in a friends driveway and drove the snowmobiles right down Route 248. Great video , wonderful memories , thank you for sharing.

I also remember this well. I also lived in Bethlehem, PA, over by Freedom HS. I remember our road, which is quite wide for a road with 1 lane going each way, only had a path enough for one car to get through. My brother and I had to push on our door to open it since there was a 5-foot drift of snow up against it. We also were off from school the entire week.

I graduated from Freedom High School in 1992. I remember this storm, as well. I live near Governor Wolf Elementary School in Bethlehem. I don't have pictures of the Blizzard of 1996, but I do have photos of the blizzard in 2016.

I lived on Main Street next to Moravian College. My Neighbor went into labor...the whole block started shoveling her out...Army National Guard came to take her to the hospital! We were neighbors just on opposite side of Moravian

I remember that storm! I was living in an apartment complex on Emmaus Avenue in Allentown, and the whole city was like a ghost town. You could walk down the Avenue without seeing ANY cars or signs of life. It was a LOT of snow.

This was so incredible to see! I was born in July ‘94 so I have no memory of it, but I grew up on W Laurel Street right near College Hill Moravian Church and my parent’s photo album shows the snow up to the porch! In my lifetime we’ve had two storms that produced more snow than this, and even still the 96 storm seems to be the benchmark.

Hello neighbor, I'm glad I could give you a peek into your one-year-old world back in '96! I was a member of College Hill when I lived in Bethlehem. Great place to live.

Thanks for sharing this video... brought back many memories. I was 10 years old and my family lived in Fountain Hill. Pretty sure you're right, school was canceled for a week. All the neighborhood kids were sledding down Dodson St!

i was almost 14 then. worst storm of my lifetime - we got a week off in catty, too. the frigid temperature immediately after is why schools were closed for a week. i remember my street was one sheet of ice after the initial plowing.

We lived on Lenox Ave at this time. My Dad and I had to shovel out the alley (Moore St) to get the cars out just to drive down to Greenwich. It was a monster storm!!

Thank you Darlene. I remember this well. I was 13 at the time, living on the East Side of Allentown. I remember taking the opportunity to walk out and stand in the middle of Hamilton street, normally super busy, but completely covered in snow. I also remember having to go out a side window to unbury our back door from the snowdrift), digging a few spots out for the dog to do his business. At one point they sent in a big snowblower machine with dump trucks or something alongside it to remove all the snow because there was nowhere to plow it. I think we missed a week or so of school.

What a great video.Thank you for sharing. I remember it well. We normally park on a snow emergency route and prior to a snow event we would move our vehicles to Fairview Street. Soooo much shoveling. When we made our way to dig them out, we couldn't get one of the cars started. Ended up having it towed and traded in for our first new car, ever. Our kids earned lots of pocket money that year, actually not far from where you taped.
