Thank you for posting this hauntingly beautiful piece. Heartbreaking to think of the loss of the incredibly rich and soulful Yiddishkeit world in this part of Europe.
I am Ukrainian and I am sorry that almost nothing is left of that Jewish world in Eastern Europe. In Belarus, out of two million Jews before WW2, there are now no more than 10 thousand left. In Ukraine, out of more than two million, only 100,000 remained. The whole world is gone. Today in Ukraine, a Jew is indistinguishable from a Ukrainian by almost nothing.
I remember when i was little and we went to see Grandparents. My Grandfather was listening to music. I was about 4 years old and said the music was sad.
Samuel Slagter...And the Palestinians? This is not a good development. Neither for the Jews nor for the Palestinians. And it wasn't God, it was the English. And no, I'm not an anti-Semite, on the contrary, but the situation in Israel is anything but ideal.
Roman Vishniac took many of these photos did he not? Haunting...heartbreaking...So many pictured were murdered most likely. They are not forgotten. Thank you for this.
I love the music here, sometimes very poignant. All this history, life and culture now but a memory. So these people were different and kept mainly to themselves, had their own language, customs & Religion but did they have to die because they were different. Pogroms were nothing new to them in Eastern Europe but the Germans brought something unheard of. The mass slaughter of millions of innocent, unarmed Jews. And the worse thing is .... they never really paid for their crimes. They destroyed in a way that beggars belief and for a large part - got away with it.
Sandra Price, I agree with you, but one thing you don't know Germany send millions Euros to Israël every years for dédommagements, I never thaught THAT ONE DAY THE POLITIQUE OF THIS DEAR COUNTRY WILL BE EXTREMIST, FACHISTE
