That's the problem with many "reactors" on TH-cam now, they're not actually watching the film, they're just auditing while carrying on conversations. I used to watch a lot of reactors, but these days they go off an tangents about "hey, so and so played this part, do your remember?" or some such nonsense. Reacting used to be just that, reacting to what you're watching, now it's just an excuse to hear yourself talk or worse talk with a pretentious bent as if they're a producer/director/film student; which is a shame, because they're used to be some great reactors out there. Also, if you want to have post watch talk, by all means, but talking over dialogue isn't that. Basically, most reactors today just disrespect the movie they claim to be watching/reacting to.

Here’s what I think you did not get when they were outed (emails leaked), and it’s understandable because you are both straight. You mentioned that they were making a bigger deal than what it actually is. The issue is that NO ONE should be outed, we are the ones who should come out when we are ready, nobody should take that away from us. It’s about respecting privacy and have some kind of decency. I think that what Alex did is very important and needed to happen, we cannot just walk around and pretend that invasion of privacy is ok and just brush it off. You have no idea the struggles we go through when it comes to “coming out”, some people have it easy but a lot of people do not. It takes a lot of courage to do so and to have a random do that for you is absolutely not ok.

    • @NiaNltr

25:13 In the book that's exactly it! Throughout the book Alex is shown to hyper-fixate on gerrymandering Texas again and again, then the Republican Party's candidate opposing Alex's mum arranges a huuuge leak inside the White House's private servers and most importantly it's an extreme privacy violation done only to make them lose (either Texas, the presidency or both). As a 73-yo gay man, I realized my orientation early on, when I developed a (non-sexual) crush on Mighty Mouse, and then Disney's Peter Pan.
For a long time, in films and tv, gay (or bisexual) men were rarely depicted whatsoever, and if they were, it was to mock them or explain this as an underlying reason for any villainry. I recall the great step forward when Boys In The Band first came out, of a group of openly gay men trying to outdo each other's bitchiness. Sixteen Candles was a first for me, watching a budding affection between the lead and his friend, yet quashed almost as soon as it was identified. The tragic end of Brokeback Mountain crushed me.
I have never reacted to a movie in such a deep fashion. I have been binge-watching the movie itself, the TH-cam clips, and every reaction video to it I can find, since it first came out. The comedic moments still make me laugh, the tender moments still cause tears to well up, to the same degree with little signs of diminishing despite I'm to the point past the memorization of the lines, to where I know each subtle raised eyebrow, twitch of a smile, or tightening of a jaw muscle.
So for me, all the cliches in this enemies-to-friends story with its fairy-book happily-ever-afterwards ending has affected me (and apparently a lot of other people) to the very core of my being. This is so novel for me that for once I didn't have to try to mentally transpose the heroine into a hero in order to try to deeply relate. Cheesy movie it may seem, yet I find that this is part of its charm. I have nothing to compare it to, so for me, these parts are all unchartered territory, fresh and unspoiled.

Even though the movie is obviously not based on a true story, the emails being hacked is based on a real scandal where phones of dozens of celebrities and public figures were hacked, including members of the royal family. But the most twisted thing about it was when it was discovered that, not only had phones of victims in terrorist attacks been hacked, but also the phone of a murdered teenager named Milly Dowler, which lead the police and her family to hold out false hope that she was still alive.
I can't believe some people have said that Nicholas and Taylor have no chemistry. Their connection felt so organic and effortless. I could feel the angst, the hurt, the longing, the love and the friendship. I really love how the sex scene is so much more than sex, it's truly making love. It was so intimate that I felt like I was intruding on something very personal between two people. This one of the most beautiful, complex romances I've ever seen in a movie. But also a great depiction of what it's like to be in a position where you are afraid to be who you are.

A couple at the most and they would not go in a small closet like that where they could not see the threat. "The Spare" would likely not have as much protection as the crown prince.

Many people have explained that the email leak is a big deal cause no one should be outed but it’s also the fact that they didn’t make the emails as big of a deal as they did in the book. In the book Henry talks about how it’s one of the only places where he can be himself. The one place they can be vulnerable. Those being leaked took away the little privacy that Henry still had to himself. He talked about how Henry fox has to belong to himself to some degree which just makes it more important.

The book focuses a lot more on the actual politcal aspect for Alex that the movie does and it makes more sense. I think they cut and fit what they could and seemed improtant for their romance to fit it in a movie. Personally i think it would have fit better as a show but the movie is fun and cheesy.

The book is a bit more elaborate.
There it is indeed first suspicions and public scrutiny, then leaked photos, and then the Clairmont server is hacked. It is kind of more believable as there the antagonist isn't a random small reporter that magically hacked the president's private mail server, but a whole network of companies under Richards, digging for any information to bring down the president and prevent a reelection.
The characters are much more fleshed out, and while there is (even more) sex, it also goes much deeper in regards to emotions and plot.
The movie is great though, and we need much more like this. There are plenty straight cheesy romcoms, like I could watch a new one every day for the rest of my life, but for queer, or gay romcoms(?) there are few and far between, especially ones that are so open about it, and where the central problem is not about being queer, or discovering being queer. Like sure, that's a topic mentioned here, but the drama stems from their positions, not their sexuality foremost.

Probably never did a child of an American president have a long-term relationship with British royalty. Almost universally (more or less), children of European royalty dated and married, as the requirement was royals could only marry royals. Lots of examples where the one partner could barely speak the language of the new home country.
When WWI happened, it was pretty much a family feud as so many heads of states were interrelated. Also, inbreeding in this fashion led to some awful outcomes.

  • @kylecalame1996

Straight men don't in general try to get movies that aren't sports, action, or some version of porn. You have to engage your head to get it, the one on your neck not the one dangling between your legs. You can do this, just watch, listen, and pay attention. If you can pay attention when the coach gives you plays, you can comprehend things that are about romance, even gay romance. Give it a serious shot before you crap on it. It's fine to crap on it if you really don't like it, but as reviewers, you didn't pay enough attention to know what you were crapping on. Stop drinking and playing with your feet and jawing long enough to use your ears more than your mouth. It's fine to dislike or hate it, but pay enough attention to it to get why you really dislike it. You didn't. Stick to action films, sports and straight porn for reviews until you get more well rounded life experience so as to become credible reviewers on other topics.

The monarchy has a very strict code based on tradition and they fear any break from it. Look what happened when Diana died - by following royal protocol (technically she was no longer a royal) it blew up in their faces and had to pivot. A gay prince -- even the spare -- would cause discord because his duty is to produce an heir. And there is always the concern that the monarchy could be eliminated -- there are politicians who have advocated for that. I mean, the British press went nuts over the price marrying a POC. So much so they left the country. Now imagine that 10x worse. (Technically the King does have powers, but almost never uses them - He must approve any law Parliament passes, he opens and dissolves parliament, and can declare war. ) Also, the monarchy is supposed to be politically neutral and dating the President's son violates that as well.

I love you guys I really do. But, fuck me, your knowledge of British institutions particularly the Crown, really let's you down. OK if you didn't cover British history in school, but I assume you have access to other forms of media and have moderately inquisitive minds. If you did you would understand the reason the gay issue might cause some concern. Not because of the British people so much but maybe the Commonwealth would have a different opinion. Your line that the only real drama in the film was the Texas result illustrates the extent to which Americans (some Americans) confuse America with the world. Pull your heads from out of your arses. Once again though, love you guys.
