I bought the game yesterday thinking I'd just give it a try. I ended up playing for 8 straight hours, then I realized you made videos about it and ended up here. 10/10 deserved goty.
I don't think the Obelisk is "bad." Any scaling X-mult joker is never going to be "bad." If anything, I think it's the cheapest X-mult Joker in the game to scale since you don't need any special cards to make or things to buy to scale it. I think the core issues with Obelisk are simple and more general: 1) It feels like you already need a ton of things to already be developing toward Obelisk making sense before you get it to make it worth getting. It's not like Consetllation where you'd almost instant buy it no matter the context (though ironically a Constellation may be one of the best Jokers to get with an Obelisk). But you're also never really going to intentionally build toward getting an Obelisk either (like, say, a Hack or a Baron); its appeal is inherently you NOT doing that so that it pays off more. It inherently tells you "stop doing what you've been doing, no matter how far along you are" and most people just don't want to take that risk or suddenly cut bait if they have something potentially strong going. Which leads to the other one: 2) It's just not that fun to play toward. I don't think anyone ever feels too excited or gratified to get one. I hate to say things like "it makes you think and people don't like thinking" or "it takes work to make pay off", but there's an inherent laboriousness to it that just clashes with "it's a fun game." Like Seance, which NOBODY likes building toward and it being harder to get the same result than with other Jokers.
Burglar and Econ joker is the set up I think. Obelisk plus rocket/cloud9 plus burglar lets you run a ton of hands before the first pivot. I guess the dream is working up from high card to pair to two pair/trips to full house/four of a kind to five of a kind to flush five, whilst not needing obelisk until you hit like 25 hands on high card. That way you have room for obelisk to run for like 100 hands.
Obelisk is bad. It's not as good as similar jokers, is one of the worst Rares in the game, and is far more situational than is usable unless you get lucky with what other jokers you find. It's also worse early on if you dont *have* a hand that's been played way more than others
My main issue with Obelisk is that I only ever seem to get it in ante 1 or 2. I don't want it that early, unless the rest of my jokers are good enough to keep carrying me while the Obelisk just waits. I'd be happy to get it later when I've already played one hand enough it's actually possible to avoid reseting the Obelisk before the end of ante 8.
I feel the issue with Oboe is simple. Obelisk usually doesn't come early enough that you can plan around it. At least from my experience, it always comes late AFTER I've determined my strat, and what I'm building and to dedicate to it would mean that I'd have to completely ditch my plan. Some people can pull this off. I'm not that good yet, so I'm not that flexible. I have to stick with what I've got. Especially if I've gotten something like Pair of Pants, and now I have to stop doing two pairs and go to standard pairs. That being said, you get it early enough and some flat mult, you're goddamn golden. That burglar is the start of the show though, letting you build HC to a point where it's no longer a concern.
The beautiful thing about pair of pants is you dont have to stop. You can play things like full house. Flush full house. I think even flushes work if it contains a pair. The hand just needs to contain the two pair it doesnt need to be a two pair played hand.
Yeah, I don't think it's a case of you see obelisk, you take it every time. It's situational. One of the best cases to use it is on checkered deck, because it's usually worth it to switch off of flushes towards the midgame anyway, so your obelisk is already pre-charged with flushes and you can just play everything else.
@@roetemeteor This applies to all jokers that have the word "contains" - so early on some of those jokers can be extremely handy, even if you aren't specifically building for the hand type they specify. Pair, 3 of a kind & 4 of a kind jokers will all work in a deck where you can already reliably get a 5 of a kind, for example. Not that you'd want to have them for long except for the times mult ones.
I just never knew how to set up an obelisk without dying from not playing the hands I built around. But this video kind of made it make sense to me. Instead of building around leveling a certain hand you go for general flat mult and create a buffer by spamming high card, for example. maybe im wrong but I think i’ll give it a try next time i see an early obelisk
One strat I've seen for early obelisk is building a buffer with pairs instead of high cards, so if you ever run into a situation where your hand is so bad that you're forced to play a high card it at least won't reset your obelisk
ngl i never understood red card dislike, obelisk dislike i can get because pivoting bad - red card is really easy to use if u just understand it as "every skip is the same as taking a planet card"
red card is really good no doubt, but you also lose out on chips (assuming planet packs), and you need to scale it by spending money on things that also scale you. You just have to work around it a tiny bit - which is tough early game, where it is most useful to be skipping packs for red.
this is a really good run to learn from. i never knew how to make obelisk work or red card work. plus you gave some good advice about skipping & economy towards the end there.
I think it's a mental disconnect, where you think you can only play a 2nd type of hand. When I thought obelisk was bad, I wasn't thinking that I could play EVERYTHING that wasn't my most played. Idk why I felt that, just did.
I don't get what's wrong with Fortune Teller? It's a bit hard to jumpstart early, but most runs, you're going to try to get a ton of Tarot cards to deck fix and if the economy gets there, it's a pretty easy flat mult card to scale.
in this run, red card is just better imo. Since you are getting +6 mult after every round it scales way faster than fortune teller. There are situations where it doesnt makes sense to play a tarot card, so you lose out on mult. Where as red card you just spend money and skip packs.
It's basically a winmore joker that doesn't win that much more. A typical "early game flat mult that's the first to go once you get good stuff" joker is +15 (summit, abstract etc). Fortune teller takes some time to get to that level, and if it's in say the 60s, then it means you have used 60 tarot cards, meaning your deck has been fixed to such an extent that fortune teller is not relevant any more.
@@naute2day For this run, yeah. In general, Red Card is better. But I don't think that means you see an early Fortune Teller and just get disgusted with it the way Roffle did. Also, Red Card isn't always the best early option either if you don't have a strong econ early or you're just starting to get a direction and may need those cards from packs more than you can afford to skip them.
@ Sure, I think everyone will eventually get out of it late, but I think it still has more upside to carry longer into runs than most of those other Jokers you mentioned as well since it can eventually more reliably get past those jokers and not risk losing any mult.

Obelisk bad, when I see it I feel physical pain and I get mad and stuff! Ooh, aah, I’m so mad at obelisk!
Am I doing this right?
Yes 👍
She gold stake on my obelisk till I roffle
*EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER*

Obelisk hate was so forced man
All the homies hate obelisk
Interesting I beat the monolith challenge today and there’s an obelisk video.
Obelisk is just obnoxious to use, that's all.
i just find obelisk's gameplay very unfun personally, having to setup the high card and then continue to keep track of what hands youre playing feels very boring, but that may be just me
Gold Stake elitism detected
All stakes are valid
obelisk is so awful tho, i have no idea how you made it work
im just so confused watching this vid, obelisk is literally trash and you're just praising it?
@@solin21210 maybe your just bad
It was over 10x mult at the end, over 5x mult during the Ante 8 boss blind. How is that trash/awful?
just play high cards early so it's your most played hand. after 10 or more high cards, ramp up obelisk by playing any hand except highcard.
