hiya, yep you can change the guides yourself but they ideally need to be pressed in and out, to avoid burrs, the main important thing is to get the set height right when you press in the new ones, I've used a stack of plain washers before, to stop them being pressed in too far so you press up to the washers, use the old guide to sus out how many you need, I have whacked them in and out before but you do risk mushrooming the guide and having to de-burr afterwards, a welder is certainly a good addition to the tool kit

valves 5 & 6 tend to get loose like that since they are the only 2 exhaust valves that are right next to each other so they run hotter. I just did a rebuild on mine, if you are in US you can send your cam to Delta and get a welded regrind done, i also did flat top pistons as mine had dished. Cool vid. OD trans will be nice. Headers are a pain, mine is one piece also, I see they make 2 piece headers now, Id get one of those if I was getting one. I do have an mg midget tho, so diff car body but same engine.

Always best to take the head to a shop when getting new valves installed. The force needed to install the guide usually mushrooms it slightly ( usually only noticeable with a telescopic gauge and mic ) due to the guide being made from a soft metal. So having the guide reemed out 100% plumb is always the safe option to avoid the valve moving out of plumb. At least this is what I was told.

How much did the engine rebuild cost you? I'm comparing the cost of a recently restored one to actually doing it myself as a project. Thanks :)

Thanks! I plan on buying one in the next year or so, seems like a great fun car for a good price and seems pretty reliable too. win, win and win! Appreciate the reply!

Alex, I dont want to be too negative, but I wouldn't say too reliable, haha, I have had a lot more repairs on my UK car vs our muscle cars, BUT if you have time and patience it can be made much more reliable. As Sawyer said, get a UK oil pump, clearance on the Chinese pumps is hit and miss. Sawyer are running stock ignition? Mine died right after purchase and I went with a crane optical setup, has been good for awhile now.
