- Hogwarts Castle - a 5 Inch Gauge Live Steam Locomotive - Part #1 - This is a conversion of an existing "Hall" class 5 inch gauge locomotive into a "Hogwarts Castle". The job is from "The Steam Workshop" (www.steamworkshop.co.uk). My part of this project is to rebuild the bottom end of the Locomotive and make it look more like the full size "Hogwarts Castle"...... Thanks for the videos Keith! My daughter and I love watching your videos together. I wish I lived somewhere where steam was more popular. Here in Canada it's not very common and your videos are a glimpse into a world that I would love to be a part of. Keep them coming! After 8 years of watching TH-cam, this is my first comment ever.

Thank You for your steam videos. I love the detail. My Grandfather worked as a fireman and a brakeman during the steam era. I view your work as keeping alive a bygone era.
Fun fact: Hogwarts 'Castle' was not actually intended to be Olton Hall. Initially Warner Bros had 34027 Taw Valley earmarked to receive the role and it was painted red and given the Hogwarts Castle nameplates, but J K Rowling thought it looked too modern! Thus here we are with a red 5972 Olton Hall...
So they couldnt get a proper castle class locomotive to play the part either way.
Thanks for the video Keith. I remember taking my great nephew to the York Railway Museum. He was about 8 or 9 at the time. We took a ride on the train from the Harry Potter film. A good little trip out .
In the films Hogwarts Castle is a castle class, but in the books its just " a scarlet steam engine". so...it could be anything you wanted it to be really going off that description XD

The movie engine was Olton Hall painted up and named Hogwarts Castle. So it's not realy a Castle class. And yes, it could be anything, in my wee years I painted an american loco red and slapped the Hogwarts Express board on it. It's lost to history now.
No matter what you call it or how bad it may look right now, I'm sure after you get done with it it'll look great!! Looking forward to future posts of this locomotive.

5972 was a later hall with bits of modifications here and there. Not sure if you'll add those but they are quite distinctive for the sharp eyed viewer. Very delicate engineering indeed, looking forward to the final product.

Vertical injectors are found on Black Fives behind the cab steps!
Perhaps the builder got the wrong drawings and ended up painting it black?
Saw one at Dreaming Spires Oxford 3 years ago that got unloaded in the dark, prepaired in the dark,
ran superbly and about midnight put her back in the car and went home???
Should have gone to... No built a Black Five, Why hide the hall!!

I have a new Lathe... Well new to me, my 5 th. Yes a Raglan 5 inch so its new paint, repair the motor and get on with the many projects!!!
Lets hope that machinist isn't watching your videos, he might never sleep again! I have a few friends who're no big fans of the movie engine, in their opinion it's a mortal sin to paint Olton Halls beautiful GWR green into red and slap fake nameboards on and whoever did it should be strung by their entrails from a post. But I'm looking foreward to this, I think it'll be the only live steam Hogwarts Castle in the world to my knowledge. If you can fix up a set of Mk1 coaches in a matching livery you'll have a set that could draw big crowds.
Agree. Hogwart's Castle should have been a new one, 7038.
Once the locomotive is finished could you do a video of it running? It would be interesting to compare this one to the 3 1/2 inch version on the Steam Workshop channel

I find the taste of asbestos is regional, Canadian asbestos is chalky and bitter while Chinese asbestos tastes claylike. Not familiar with English but if you sniff a little and you cough up pink sputum you know it is pure and not fouled with lead filler. It also leeches a bit of used as a filter when you add milk to your tea a practice I cannot get my arms around, milk is for coffee.

What do you know about the history of the engine Keith? I’ve been on the hunt for a particular 5” Hall class for years. It was part of 4 built by the same guy in my club to 1 1/8th scale. I would love find her and get her home
It ran at my club track in the early 1970s to the 1980s when it went away. The name of the engine was Whaddon Hall 6970 fitted with a Hawksworth tender

What does asbestos smell like and how big of a huff do you take ? I may have some I need to test but its too dirty to put in my mouth !!

Really ...... why not maybe look at some photographs of the full size "Hogwarts Castle" - I think it is written on nameplates on both sides of the engine . . . .
The side plates say "Hogwarts Castle", but the front plate does say "Hogwarts Express".
That is the way of things ....... the front plate is usually the name of the train or service . . .
Keith, it's not murder, but justifiable homicide. ;>) That noise is offensive to any remotely rational person. To a professional musician, like yourself, it must be absolutely hideous. Perhaps the miscreant will move on.
Personally, I think it's a terrible shame that Olton hall, the real steam locomotive has had it's history ignored and been forced into a false coulor scheme. All the work that was put into saving her from the scrap man and restoration to working order (honestly an amazing feat for anything as complex as a steam locomotive) is lost and forgotten, now to be a novelty owned by a film company, never to run again. My honest opinion, she should be put back into U.K preservation, and yes she can have the red for certain appearances but should be still restored to her original GWR and BR colour scheme, at least for afew years.
