THIS is what singing is all about. In all of her portrayals, Zeani is outstanding. Class, deep feeling, musical pathos, perfect control of the line, be it in belcanto to verismo roles. The great, grand tradition. And besides, she is a terrific Lady and a marvellous, generous and loving Soul. She is a great friend of mine and I Love Her. Blessings to you, Maestra!
I must agree with you, Charlotte, that this is gripping performance, LIVE, that is not edited in the studio, etc, etc. I would have give anything to be there at that performance!!! To me, after listening to her for the past two years on TH-cam and elsewhere on CDs, she was just a superb performer/singer.
I think Zeani is the best opera singer of all '900. Her voice is hot, she is perfect in all her performances. In "l'altra notte..." is wonderful, excellent, like always. W Virginia!!!
So much depends on what we have become accustomed to hearing. The Callas performance with Serafin is of course a wonder, though to me it sounds like a seriously considered, beautifully accomplished but slightly slow studio recording. By contrast, Zeani is caught in the urgency of a live performance and in that context I find her tempo completely convincing. How lucky we are to have two such fine versions!
@@madamevera right, I'm a big fan of Maria Callas, but both of the performances give me chills! Also, the deep joy given by hearing them is not much different from the pleasure of seeing one of your performances, you are quite a genius, too 😁
Magda Olivero's performances in this opera are, in my opinion, more emotionally intense, but Zeani's has a more beautiful natural voice and the vocal agility required for the passages in the 'l'altra notte' aria. A fantastic performance.
@TassiloDavid Personally I find the low notes appropriate. This is after all a live performance, possibly from the Verona Arena with its thousands of spectators, and not a carefully modulated studio recording. To the audience a soprano's low notes will never be heard as strongly as the middle and upper notes and Zeani, with her typical intensity, ensures they are not weak. However, the close, on-stage microphone does not discriminate and picks up everything equally clearly.
Thank you dear @sospello for sharing this ~ a very beautiful and impressive interpretation of this great Diva. Also my best wishes for a Happy Birthday !!
Beautifully sung, although L'altra notte is faster than one is used to hearing,.........thereby loosing a bit of the word impact. "Callas" takes the time for every word, so that one is sucked into Margherita's world. Zeani accomplishes this to a slightly lesses degree. One can not ignore that this is also one of the finest renditions of this aria!!
Peu trop?? Think of the words: The other night they threw my baby into the sea. Then to drive me mad they said that I drowned him. How can anything be "trop"?
Such an intelligent singer! Why did she have to spoil L'altro notte with those vulgar chest tones at the very end? Orrore! And I would love to hear the dialogue with Faust leading into the Lontano duet.

Zeani delivers a powerful, passionate performance of Margherita"s "Mad Scene" from Artigo Boito's 'Mefistofele'.
I totally agree. Callas was wonderful but Zeani stands in her own right among the greatest sopranos in the 20th century!

Brilliant. Amazing. I have seen this name around, but never before actually listened to her sing. I am in shock. I love her voice.
Sensational! So pleased to read the comparison to the Great voice of Claudia Muzio, and the great dramatic presentation of a Callas. Brava!

Spectacular!!!!

@CharlotteinWeimar Best wishes to Mme Zeani on her birthday. Such emotion and beauty of voice--monumental artistry.

Something of Claudia Muzio.
What unfortunate conducting. Zeani's singing is great though.
Un petit peu trop ;mais, quand même...

TassiloDavid nobody gives a fuck about what you’d love to hear. Fool.
Those low notes separate the women from the girls in this aria
