This is a live performance of August Burns Red's "Mariana's Trench" focusing only on their drummer, Matt Greiner.
The audio was recorded live from my own personal microphones and the original song was dubbed quietly in the background of the video.
The video was filmed on 4 cameras.
Sony HVR-Z5U
Canon EOS Rebel T3i
Canon 7D
Panasonic AVCCAM

The drummer with the best posture in the world
True, that guy should make videos and impersonate as an Osteopath!
Need it for that sweet double pedal !

3:27 to 3:30 best 4 seconds of the video, Matt throws in that little china fill for Jake as Jake prances majestically back onto the stage-- perfection.
i caught that as well and went to see if any one else did.
Timbo slice fucking nasty dude...
“Here’s your tasty nugget”
Gave me chills lol
I always thought Jake was choking the cymbal lol
You can tell Matt Greiner was sent by God to be a beast drummer.
The dude is an absolute beast.
Spikê Høllow You really need to check out ken bedene. He's 5 times as insane.
He's good but not a beast! Look for jimmy pino

Drummers are unsung heros
and bassists ... lol smh -.-
christianmetalpwns Everybody in a band are important... drummers and bassists gives the power, style and soul of the songs in my opinion ( I am guitar player).
james parkwayd I'm a little bit late in the game to say this (late by 3 years), but I drum and do the clean vocals for my band. I'm not trying to brag, but that shit is hard and a bunch of people I know are just as confused as to how I can do vocals while drumming and not go off tempo. I'm not the greatest drummer, it's more of a hobby, but I definitely try to do really hard shit all the time. Sometimes I even try doing covers of Rings on Saturns songs with the screams. Technically I am a drummer who is a sung hero...
drummers are the heartbeat of the band
I am in a rock band. We just completed a show in Seattle and I am the drummer. But because of my below-average looks no female fans came to me for an autograph nor wanted to go out on a date. When I approached our female fans, they would ask about the lead singer or bass player. It sucks being an ugly dude in America.

Matt is so fluid in motion just seems like he is living the part...Amazing!
yes jake, give it the grove slap please 3:25...HAHAH killer part
This is going to sound lame, but anyone have an idea where he gets his shirts? They tend to be pretty awesome.
message him on social media, the band usually reply
Yes, pretty lame... but I want to know too. Hehe
Trump playing drums: CHINA, CHINA, CHINA.
Under-rated comment 🤘
How he plays in jeans, blows my mind.
That literally has nothing to do with anything
Mario Valdez You must not be a drummer
lol ive played in jeans.. even a tux.. its the same thing. your jeans are probably to tight. lol
I couldn't play jeans, I'd just feel too constricted. Props to you guys lol
GlassMetropolis get some levis homie lol
Holy Ballz, I liked Matt's set-up on the constellations album more, but that 20" Oriental is so brutal! :)
I love how Jake Luhrs reaches to Matt in 3:28, this is definitely my favorite band
Everytime I watch him play I get chills. He's amazing.
If I could play one song on drums....
+Phillip Betts Have you been practicing?
+CStedronsky Burn
Hogan Bentle
Lol wasn't even trying to burn I was legitimately wondering. You'll never learn the song or any other August Burns Red song if you don't practice it A LOT. I speak from experience.
You're 100 percent right. August Burns Red drum tracks are so advanced and technical, a lot of practice is needed
You want advanced and technical? check out animals as leaders
2:41 one of the most perfectly composed fills I've heard from Matt... Its so powerful in its placement and simplicity
This video has 700k more views than the original live CD version, just sayin...
best drum player in the world.
For you maybe bro... because for me, is george kollias. ;)
Lol no neil peart is the best drummer ever
Seth Collins For you maybe bro
+Alan Roy Lechuga For you maybe bro
You say the same for me? /.-
Matt without a doubt has some of the smoothest transitions I've ever seen
1:39 the kraken is released
What?
Sam Nagorcka yessssss!
he's talking about the china
The way the audio was edited towards the end was magnificent. When the volume of everything except the drums faded, it sounded like what Matt would be hearing.
That splash sounds super nasty. Fucking love it!
I wish I could command an instrument like matt g. shit is amazing.
Good video though it's kind of annoying having the cameras change every 3 or 4 seconds. I'd prefer the aerial view over the frontal cam or the behind camera.

kuro.i hell, I'd be happy with just watching his footwork during the entire song.
StAtIc ScReAm He's playing heels up, so not too interesting to watch, but very impressive as it is quite exhausting.
18" oriental china! Best sounding
china you can get!
Looks like average middle-age dad dude until he picks up the sticks and unleashes
He's 26 here and he's only 32 now. he's 2 years younger than Aaron Gillespie..
Good posture, good technique, good power, good stamina, good writing. All you could want in a drummer. Truly my idol!
you just witnessed god
The second bass drum is for CHANGING IT IF THE HEAD BREAKS
Matt is such an awesome guy! I had lunch at his house last Sunday and he's so chill his whole family is. Awesome people of God.
Thank you for commenting on this song it's wonderful i was actually listening to breaking Benjamin and saw your comment so i went to see what else you've commented on and found this so thank you! :)
esse cara é um dos melhores bateristas que tem no meio do metal
ABR fucking dies the minute Matt Greiner decides he's done. I'm a guitar player of 10+ years and this dude makes me want to just quit the strings and pick up the sticks. Such a creative drummer.
holy mother of god...
i wanna start playing more metal music like this, but i dont want to say good bye to my cymbals! :,(
oh man, he was about to mess up right there! lol who cares, Matt is still awesome! 3:19
For everybody who's confused, the extra bass drum is used to hold his hi hat stand in place. That way he doesn't have to spread the legs of it out and it be in an awkward position. It makes it more comfortable and gets it closer to the double bass pedal.
I love that kit :O
im not an ABR fan, but I definitely give Matt props on being a really good drummer based on the videos I've seen of him.
does anyone know where I can get this shirt?
+Grimly Beerbart Not sure but I think it's from stheart.com but they don't make it anymore.

1.1m :)
the second bassdrum is there so that he can mount his hihat stand with the legs closed. It means that it doesnt move away and that he can have it closer to his pedal. also looks too i guess?
It's for if the head of the first one ruptures.
he said that its there for the hihat himself. the head on it is also different from what he normally uses so i very much doubt its there for a replacement.
The 2nd bass drum is to trick the audience into thinking he has a bigger drum kit.
well looks probably play a small part but like i said he said that its for his hihat stand. its attached to the bass drum because the legs are folded. a lot of metalcore drummers have started doing this.
You could get the hi-hat there using a cable clutch if you wanted though. I'm sure I've heard him say in an interview before that he doesn't like using more than one bass drum, I'm also sure I read somewhere that he only used that set-up because Truth wanted him to.
@ 2:01 love that fucking shit
c4gob00m His live drums were placed over the actual soundtrack. The only live instrument in this video are his drums. Thats why at 0:33 you hear the floor tom coming in on the track as he is still coming in with the crash cymbal on the video. :)
ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMERS ALIVE. :)
Matt Greiner! You never fail to amaze us!
Dang . Killer fillers bruhh
3:28 lick fingers, touch cymbals, jump away high five looooool

Amazing! Mind blown especially on his phenomenal timing what a talented dude

People with brains stopped using that term about 10 years ago.
What's your favorite top 3 breakdowns from ABR??
Amazing is the only word I can think of to describe this.
I suggest you read my other comments. I've addressed how playing "properly" can also cause injury. There is nothing wrong with his grip, I will say it again. He is continually playing with his arms for power, to play with emphasis, and to put on a show. There is nothing wrong with playing like that; I assure you and everyone else who thinks playing like that is going to cause injury. All this will do is make the drummer tired faster. It's called upper arm fatigue.
I don't think anyone can pull off a consistent 16th note double bass "roll" with one foot at that speed. xD I actually meant 2:22 ... Listen to it, still sounds like only one bass? And why would you even bother setting up a bass drum for display. xD If anything he would want to display that he is able to play without two bass drums, but he isn't really, so... :p
I'm not wrong. I've got plenty of years of experience with weight lifting, playing the drums, and studying the human anatomy. Excessive amounts of ANYTHING can result in injury. Carpal and Tendonitis. Your argument is a red herring. You're missing the bigger picture. I suggest you do some research. You're probably just telling me whatever your drum teacher told you. It's a myth.
It is the correct terminology. Dynamics are a key component of music and if he is to play the song with power, so be it. The only thing that he is going to break are his drum heads and his sticks. If he wants to "waste energy", as you claim, let him. You're arguing the unarguable. He's not going to injure himself playing like that.
What is your point? Playing the proper way can cause Wrist Tendonitis and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It has everything to do with dynamics. More so, putting on a show. Let him play however the fuck he wants. He is not going to hurt himself.
This guy is my hero! I grew up in the same place as him and my buddy is like dating his sister lol... It's so weird how he seems so far away like a super star but at the same time he's just a normal guy that grew up around Amish people like me! :D ABR FTW
I can't tell if you're being facetious or not. I'm quite aware that you don't have to lift weights or exercise to play drums. I said that to help people understand where I'm coming from and that I know how the human body works.
So will playing the drums any way. We are not talking about his grip or his poster. We are talking about how he is using his arms to hit his kit. Please, stop trying to tell me things I already know.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with his grip or posture. It's called dynamics. He can play however hard and loud he wants. What do you honestly think will happen if he continues?
Those oriental chinas are wonderful. I've never gotten enough power from those crashes though. I love the sounds from istanbul cymbals personally.
My favorite drummer!
I addressed this in an earlier comment. Even drumming with proper technique can result in injury. You don't see many injuries regardless.
there was only one drummer in that paragraph other than matt, that was worth mentioning and that was portnoy. have you seen portnoy play live? have you seen how hard he hits the skins and symbals? also if your on about injuring yourself playing drums, look at the way portnoy holds his stick, he uses his pointer finger and his middle finger and thumb, that puts a tremendous amount of strain on those fingers, also he holds one drum stick the wrong way round, which is also bad for the hands.
Playing the right way doesn't do either of those things. Those things are caused by using bad technique. I never said he should play a different way he can play however he wants obviously it works for him. I just said its not good for his arms and will probably cause damage later on in his life. heres a link to a video of matt greiner hurting himself by playing like that in the short term. /watch?v=WSZgfeHDvf0
Im probably wasting my time posting this but it is proven that playing with improper technique, which matt clearly does seeing as he plays with his whole arm, leads to tendon and joint problems later on in life (aka injury). Notice how i used the word improper instead of bad. Matt definitely is not bad. Also it has nothing to do with dynamics. Dynamics are just the volume that you play at. You can play just as loud with the right technique, if not louder.
It's disgusting that you people just turn a blind eye to the hate and corruption that this band disseminates. Do you not realize that their screaming and tattoos are influencing a wave of children to be evil and corrupt? And you reward this type of behavior by doing a "drum view" video?
actually if you want your brain to claw its ways out of your head trying to escape the horror then you should check out Justin Bieber. you madame are not making any impact here other than getting people angry at you. this music takes talent, the guitar playing, the drumming, the vocals. all of it.
A goat.
In all honesty, it's called a "big boy" kit. Having double pedal on 2 different kick drums gives a stereo image when recording and live miking. Also gives better options for personal optimal kick placement. Nothing more than aesthetics outside of that.
The only thing he's technical at is corrupting innocent people. August Burns Red only cares about violence, anger, and screaming, so you shouldn't support them. If you want to watch a drummer with some major talent, check out Justin Bieber!
Maybe Hardcore drummers just never use the ride that much. I mean look at Greiner here. He's got that shit allll the way over after the china. Could be the style. Less ride-playing=less need for patterns or accents on the ride bell.
Yo does anyone know if he's using a drop clutch? I didn't see him use it but somehow he loosened the hi hat up?
Endurance... Maybe. But it's FAR more complex than this.
Even the verse groove in CAFO is harder than anything in MT, fills included.
Not trying to give Matt shit, he's good. I just think he's a little over-hyped.
obviously he wasnt serious (duh &hope that doesnt sound TOO snobish) i actually care about helping people and all you care about is ticking people who arent harming ANYONE by saying lies about them and the music they like.
Why don't Hardcore drummer just use their ride bells? They all seem to just opt for a bell stuck on top. I guess it makes sense for crash/rides but that's not always the case. Can anyone provide some insight into this?
A 2nd bass drum is great for holding toms. Plus, it's much easier to mic up one kick drum instead of 2. So it doubles as aesthetics and practicality. Also, who gives a shit? Fantastic drummer.
Why insist on telling me I'm wrong when you're just going to back out of it? Anyways, take care.
I bet that "dummy" bass drum actually serves another purpose as a back up, just in case he breaks the main bass drums head. I mean hey, it happens.
The drum part really isn't very hard... If you think it is please go and watch CAFO by Animals As Leaders before you get all angry on me
its for looks, its like the rev's old kit from A7X he had 3 bass drums, 2 he used the third for looks and to hold up the other toms he has
It's because some drummers like the feel of a double bass pedal instead of 2 singles, but yet having 2 bass drums just looks cool.
Can someone tell me what china he has in between the two crashes, and what type K Custom splash is that near his hi-hats?
I understand the tuning thing. but its basically just for show really. It cant serve as a backup without a pedal on it.
Go check out the beginning of Divisions. I respect his creativity with drums in all honesty. Its some crazy stuff :)
this music doesnt do anything but speak the truth, and you know whats disgusting? the fact that you cannot see that.
5/4
Would be so much better if the snare and bass were as loud as the china...
This has got to be one of my favorite songs where the drums really stick out to me. Greiner is a phenomenal drummer!
I just posted a video of me covering this on my channel, all shot and recorded in a studio. I'm definitely not as good as Matt as I've only been playing for 5 years, but I thought I did pretty good. Tell me what you think!
Edit: It's a drum cover, for those who care
Why is there a second kick drum if he only uses one for his double pedals ?
you wanna spend some money on your cymbals, unless you want to sound like youre hitting a tin can
in this case, it's just because it looks cooler to have 2 bass drums during a live performance
its so you dont have to mic up two drums. and plus that way you only have to tune one drum.
I need EC2's on my kit RIGHT NOW
he is a troll but im trolling on him if you dont believe me ive got 5 videos on this guy
