    Amazing. A walkable, cyclable downtown is what most American cities lack. The trail will continue to be the axis of Indy's cultural and social growth.

    I'm so glad Indy is progressing. Being from Indy and central Indiana, then moving to DC where cycling, jogging, running, and alternative transit in general is more publicly accepted (even catered to), it's nice to look back and know when I visit Indy that it is keeping up with the rest of the world. And with a $63 Million (non public works project) price tag, I'd say Indy is leading in some regards.

    A very good decision, less pollution because people get on their bike for those short trips instead of using their car and it's healthy at the same time :) I hope you get the same infrastructure we enjoy here in the Netherlands!

    Wow I'm from California and our streets could benefit SO MUCH from protected bike lanes like this. I thought places like the Netherlands were the only places with proper zoning like this. Maybe I should move to Indianapolis, driving everywhere is a pain.

      Indianapolis is still terrible for cycling. The streets are in horrible condition. This is just a glorified sidewalk with constant dodging of pedestrians.

    9 years later and it’s still the gold standard for what bike infrastructure in America should be like. Many more cities are starting to follow it’s path

    Nice job Indianapolis. 👏 More U.S. cities need to do this. Cleveland, Ohio has been developing several isolated recreational bike trails, but they have done nothing to connect them up into a network. They still think not much more than painted bicycle gutters are all that are needed on city streets.

    I'm from Indianapolis but live in the Netherlands now. Hope this keeps expanding to the Indianapolis suburbs! I once cycled from Camby, Indiana to the Indy airport. So dangerous. The people of Indianapolis need all the benefits that come with cycle lanes. Every time I've travelled back to Indy over the last 7 years the people seem more unhealthy, more unhappy, and stuck. For many people, if their car breaks down, life comes to a hault until they figure out how to get it repaired. Life should not have to be so centered around a car.

    Very nice America, As a guy from the Netherlands i can compliment you for this achievement in Indianapolis at least then :P
    But you people are really taking cycling really serious in the last 2 to 3 years. Keep it up! :D
    We may consider this normal in The Netherlands, but I'm very happy for you people :D
    i also notice along side the bike lanes are the decorative plants and grass for recreational view to make it seems more pleasant, very very good!.
    But as much as good as they look, they need to be maintained..
    Just saying :P

      Thank you. We're quite proud of the Cultural Trail, and to date, it's been very well maintained. In fact, we just had one of the snowiest and coldest winters on record. The trails all across Indianapolis were often cleared of snow much quicker than the roads, which kept bikes on the paths even during sub-zero temperatures.

    • @traviskitteh
      @traviskitteh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TrueMathSquare I'm not sure what you're arguing, but try riding a bicycle on public roads anywhere else in indiana. Bicycle paths, if they do exist, exist to connect the cities of northwestern indiana, and still require the sharing of road space with cars on unprotected streets. Many Indiana motorists have little to no idea how to share the road with cyclists, and I personally have been yelled at or been nearly clipped by more than a few, despite obeying traffic laws.

    Normally you see terrible attempts to ad a cycle infrastructure. But as I see this, than I must say Thad t it looks great. There is still a lot to do, but this is a great start.
    I love it that they also ad a lot of plants. North American cities put that normally only in parks.

    • @notthegoatseguy
      @notthegoatseguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The answer is a lot is in the works.
      Fishers and Noblesville are currently in a fight trying to turn an unused rail line into a greenway/trail. There are a couple authorities trying to stop that from happening, one of whom wants to re-connect the rail line to the main network and resume freight service. If it does get turned into a trail, the fishers/noblesville/Indianapolis portion of the trail could connect to the Monon and essentially create a big trail loop of 50+ miles.
      But that's a really ambitious project and likely will need a coalition of taxes and philanthropy to get under way. Right now the only guaranteed part of it is the Fishere part of the trail through a portion of their town. Noblesville hasn't started construction, and Indianapolis is still in the pre-planning stages.
      A couple of the one-way streets have been transitioned to two way streets with more dedicated/visible crosswalks. IUPUI, the university on the western end of downtown Indianapolis, has dedicated multi-use paths and very colorful crosswalks now.
      There is also a rumored Monon expansion but it hasn't actually been announced yet.

    • @Paul_C
      @Paul_C 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      notthegoatseguy, That begs another question. In five years the city has not grown? No new streets, houses, businesses? Shouldn't you begin to make it mandatory when a street is planned, bike paths have to built at the same time?

    • @notthegoatseguy
      @notthegoatseguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't think of any notable actually new streets. There certainly are new businesses and residential. But growth in Indy proper has been...minimal. Growth in the surrounding counties is a bit better but not by much. Because this is such a developed street network, a lot of the work is in re-configuring the streets to make them more ped and cycle friendly. The results have been...mixed.
      For better or for worse, low taxes have consequences and we can't expect our government to do everything on the cheap. that's why we have over a billion dollars in deferred infrastructure and nearly as much in deferred sidewalk maintenance.

    • @Paul_C
      @Paul_C 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      notthegoatseguy Eh, ok, the last paragraph is completely alien to me. Seems, even though you lower taxes, the problems it creates is counterproductive. I'm not advocating higher taxation but a crumbling infrastructure is not something tiny a problem... it is the lifeblood of any country. Living in the Netherlands my look on infrastructure is clouded on the positive side, yours on the negative. Ah well, fighting for the good cause.

    • @Braii
      @Braii 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Outside of the cities, yes. Within the cities they have separate lanes, usually.

    • @kailahmann1823
      @kailahmann1823 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Dutch add an oversized curb to their bike roads and call it sidewalk 😁
      Here in Germany it's usually separate but only by a line of different color. Shared paths are common where pedestrians are very rare like in small villages or even outside the build area.

    Since sexual orientation is NOT in the state's nondiscrimination laws it is still perfectly legal to discriminate against anyone perceived to be homosexual in housing, employment and in any other way. In other words the restaurant has always had the right to refuse service to homosexuals and same sex couples according to the state of Indiana. Except in communities like Bloomington IN. where they have specific protections for LGBT civil rights on the books. It was partially to undermine these type of laws that the bill was written. In other places, the state has passed statute to specifically deny the right of communities to pass such laws.

    What about cyclists who don't want to ride on a sidewalk? The rest of Indiana is the worst bicycling state in the US. No bike lanes or paved shoulders anywhere. Shared use paths are glorified sidewalks. I lived in the Indianapolis area for six months and it was the worst. Bike lanes were extremely rare, and if there was a bike lane, it was in terrible condition. Some roads had a shared use path alongside it, which forces cyclists to stop at every side street and dodge pedestrians. INDOT is anti-bicycle.
