I noticed something odd with my tray of Echeveria elegans seedlings...

  • My Echeveria elegans seedlings are 9 months old now and they have grown large enough that they are starting to spill over the tray. I might need to move them out when it starts getting warmer!
    Apart from that I also noticed something odd. At least one of the seedlings do not look like the others. Do you see it too?

    How do you think it happened? Is it an actual E. elegans x agavoides hybrid? Or did the seeds just fly over from somewhere else?

      It's a hybrid (hopefully)! I think you were very meticulous in the sowing step, no other seed could have sneaked in. Haha =)

      @@mariesalonga1107 I hope you're right haha! There were a few agavoides near the elegans that I harvested it from so it is possible I guess.

      Congrats on the hybrids! I think that one just took after the agavoides parent more and looks more like that one than the elegans. Have a good day and keep growing love!

    Hello Chuck. Your seedlings served you nicely and yes wow grads on the swan of them all. Myself, I have had no luck with seeds as yet,but I will keep trying. Your tutorials keep me inspired and I know so many of us ( your viewers) are very grateful. Thank you.

      Hi Alex. Chuck suggested in one of his posts to check you out on TH-cam, so of course I did. haha. I am glad I did because from watching an earlier clip of yours I think I am managing to save a few West Rainbows that I thought were not going to make it. Still a wee bit early to tell, but they are looking 50% better in just a week. cheers

    i have a question: recently i started some propagation trays and they are quite etiolated how do i prevent this in the future. i know they need sun and they have plenty about 8 hours of sun a day and are under constant grow bulb light. is this normal for leaf props??

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there. When you say they are getting sun, is it direct or indirect? With 8 hours of direct sunlight, I am almost certain they would be dead by now since they would dry out very quickly.
      My position on leaf propagations and tiny propagations in general is that etiolation is ok. Don't feel pressured to make them look good yet. Do not give them direct sunlight, to avoid the drying up quickly problem. But give them enough light that they do not stretch too much. Let them mature a bit more, grow more leaves, grow thicker. Once they grow big enough, that's when you can move them to a brighter spot. They will be more resilient by then.

      Cerriscapades whoops! 😂 i didn’t mean 8 i meant 3 sorry i’m running on a custom keyboard any way the get three hours of direct and are under indirect grow-bulb light either way thanks for the help!!

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha alright that makes sense now. 3 hours isn't that much. Since you have growlights, does that mean they're indoors? I usually have my propagation trays in a rack under the alfresco. They don't get direct sunlight but lots of indirect light throughout the day, so they do not stretch too much.
      When they start getting bigger, they will definitely start stretching for light, but by then I would be able to move them closer to the edge of the eaves so they can get more light.

    Olá, tudo bem? Sou do Brasil, aqui também é inverno mas tenho algumas echeverias em plena floração. Eu tentei fazer polinização de algumas echeverias mas não tenho certeza se fiz certo! Algumas parecem não ter polen! Como eu sei que a polinização foi feita corretamente? Obrigada!!

      Hi there. If they have no pollen, maybe they have been dry or already stuck to the insects that were pollinating them. Usually you will like to be the first to pollinate the flowers, which means that you might want to protect it so that insects can not get to it. What I usually do is to wrap or cover the flower buds while waiting for them to bloom. Once they are open, I remove the cover and do the pollination.
      Another alternative is to have a greenhouse or enclosure where insects can't get into, and leave your plants there until they bloom, so you can pollinate them yourself.

    I'm really curious what would happen if you cross pollinated a typical echeveria rosette with something totally different like fire sticks or even jade. Is that possible?

    • @microArc
      @microArc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      in terms of genetics, probably not. they have to have compatible/similar genomes in order to be cross-bred into hybrids. for an animal example, you can breed horses and donkeys to get a mule. but you can't breed a dog with a cat.

    I have been so inspired by you, that I have turned into a bit of a collection monster!!! I've recently acquired a romeo and ebony!!! And yesterday for my birthday I was given a dicks pink...so exciting. Any hooo, on the growing from seed topic, please could you maybe show a close up of the seeds you collect? I have gathered flowers as you have shown previously but I'm not too sure that the bits I've planted are the actual seed. I've taken from echeveria, and found 4 seeds to a flower? Is this correct? Loves the vids, keep um coming.

      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late response, I only saw this comment now. The seeds are contained in the seed pods. The actual seeds are very tiny, like grains of sand. You can get thousands of seeds from a single flower. You might want to watch this video to see what they look like - th-cam.com/video/_TJ9C5_z_GA/w-d-xo.html
