Tractor Maintenance Day - Changing Oil and Filters on my New Holland PowerStar 120

  • Since I've had the tractor for about a year and a half it seems like it's time to get the oil and filters changed. Doesn't seem like a bad job at all, a bit slow since it's the first time I'm doing it and I needed to run out for a couple tools. But priming the fuel system, that's the real time suck in all of this.

    Hey Sandbox, next time you replace those fuel filters fill them with diesel first. That little primer pump will help them, but sucks if you start with empty filters! Nice couple of cows. Cute how you name your food and give them treats. :)

      Thanks! Yeah I realized that later about filling them, next time will be much faster. For the cows I know everyone says you shouldn't name them, but I'm confident I'll be fine with it, my wife on the other hand is probably going to have to just be surprised when one is gone.

    I wish I found this before I tackled this today.
    I spend quite a while frustrated with the loader pins. I finally put a clamp on each pin, clamped up in tension trying to rotate each pin, then I went and began lowering the bucket. Well before the bucket & feet were on the ground the clamps fell off (pins were loose & moved).
    When I put the loader back on, I will have the pins rotated fully to one side, such that I can use the clamps next time too.

      Yeah it can be a pain, and finding just the right position where it loosens up is what took me a bit. Putting it back on was actually easy, just popped right in. What took time there was that the pressure on the hydraulics wouldn't let me hook them up so I had to manually release a bunch of pressure/fluid to get them back together.

    Yikes!!!! I thought I was going to have a "stroke" when I saw you put the fuel filter on without filling it completely to the top.
    Also, you will have to fill it to the top several times since fuel is soaking in and then the filter will be totally saturated when it stops accepting fuel.
    I have done multiple , as in thousands of full maint. services on New Hollands and many, many other diesels so I can answer any questions you may have on servicing. these machines
    And, if I can not answer the question, I have a good friend who, let's just say, he is a New Holland "Guru" so I know he can answer the question for you.
    Oh, I will be doing one of these "full" services on a New Holland T4 105 tomorrow!!

      That's great, thanks for the offer! I'm sure I'll have questions when I do my next one.
      Definitely will do that differently when changing the fuel filters again. But I figure the only way to learn is to get in there and start doing something.

    Don't worry about dropping anything, the ground will catch it.

      I think if I had stuck to just the oil change it would have been pretty easy, but that fuel priming problem really was a pain.

      Yes, full fuel filters will help before priming. That primer pump is all but useless.... I had a good mechanic at my dealership show me how to get one running after fuel filters were changed. They filled the filters, then tried the primer pump for a long time. No start. The ace mechanic came over and had one guy get in the cab, then he took the air hose and put a nozzle on it, unscrewed the fuel cap, and put a rag over the air nozzle to help seal it a but, then released a bit of air pressure into the tank, and told the guy in the cab to start the tractor. It fired up very soon after. You have to be running the starter and adding that bit of air pressure at the same time for it to work. The less experienced mechanics were just shaking their heads after spending over an hour pushing that pump button as he watched.
      BTW, glad you have a video on the PS120. I have one, and a matching PS75 as well. Both are great tractors. @@sandboxranch

      Thanks for the info there, I actually tried using an air compressor and pressurizing the tank to push fuel in, but I didn't have another person to crank it from the cab when I did so it didn't work. But glad to know it's not just me that hasn't gotten that primer pump working. Other than that I'm really happy with the tractor and it's been great for everything I've done so far.@@rockinbbar

    Thanks for the video. I thought all fluids and filters need to be done at 50 hours? I wasn't sure if I should let my dealer do it. Now Im sure I should. I guess Im old school but I dont use gloves for anything around the farm. I can pick up wired baled hay bales one in each hand no problem. I dont get this trend that you cant touch grease, dirt or oil. I have a lot of scars. Lol.

    • @sandboxranch
      @sandboxranch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it will be a lot easier the second time, first time is always a learning experience. On this tractor based on the manual it's 600 hours but I figured to do it at about a year. I'm sure other tractors have different number for it.
      I do try to wear gloves for a couple reasons, I have a day job that relies on my hands and I've had some health problems in the past so I'm a little more sensitive to toxicity of some things than most people, dirt is all good, I just try to stay away from oil and diesel fuel.

    at what point do you change fluid on clutch housing? I have a tc45d and have can't find the clutch housing... than you

    • @sandboxranch
      @sandboxranch  ปีที่แล้ว

      My manual has front axle, final drive, and transmission drive housing at 1200 hours or 2 years so I assume it would be along with those.

      Only thing I've had happen is the wire that powers the starter solenoid came loose a couple times and kept it from starting, but a little tightening the connector with some needle-nose plyers took care of that.

    Anyone able to tell me how to access the dash menu? I tried the steps in an online manual but nothing seems to work. I also need help diagnosing a weird symbol on the led screen. I have a 2021 powerstar 75.

      Not sure if they're different but on mine there are two "switches" below the steering column that operate it.

    Get a cheater bar, look it up. Usin’ too small a ratchet startin’ out. You catch on fast.
