Love it! Super easy... plus I love that you don't spend a whole lot of time chatting and just fiddling with the yarn. You jump right in...! I'll also check out the newer version which I saw posted in the description
I tried many videos and was about to give up. I can’t crochet and I found using the extra cable technique tricky. This was clear and simple. I played it on 0.5 speed which helped even more! Thanks.
Like your demo, very clear yet concise. I am making a series of placemats in Sugar 'N Cream cotton worsted weight and the body of the placemat I'm knitting on size 6 but the edging does better at size 4. The cast on edge did not look right with the slingshot method and it was too loose and was wavy and not laying flat. This is the perfect solution. Odd thing: your choice of yarn colors was exactly what I am using in my placemats. Except of course my waste yarn is the pale aqua instead of the navy blue. (I was dyslexic as a child so doing things backwards seems more natural to me -- go figure). But I knit forwards and backwards and that has solved tension issues and keep hand with a bit of arthritis humming along. I am 66. Hands are much better since I went back to knitting. Not just therapy for the mood and good for the brain, it's s good for the hands. Thank you for your video, most kind of you.
Thank you so much. As always, it took me a while to get the hang of this, but it works great and turned out perfectly, and what a time saver! And thanks to Vivian for the suggestion to use a larger needle.
Thanks for the video. I recently learned of this technique and tried it using a circular needle. It's perfect for when I'm ready to knit from the cast-on edge. The cast-on is the same but it's a lot more tricky to hold the circular needle than a piece of waste yarn because I'm trying to balance two circular needles plus my working yarn while doing that loop-de-loop cast-on. I'm going to try your technique instead. You made it look easy!
Love how your nails match the yarn! I'm excited to try this technique. I hate picking up from the daisy chain, but do you suggest this method for a project with several hundred stitches? It's gonna be a pain, no matter what I suppose
Thanks for this. It’s Genius!! I am planning a top-down sweater in the round but want to put a polo or cowl neck on to finish it off. Suddenly, it’s an easy option. Yay! (Cool nails, btw.😊)
I tried doing it that way but I think I messed up. I think I put my working yarn underneath instead of my scrap yarn. Then I tried the crochet chain provision cast on and found it much easier for me. I think that your provisional cast on is pretty interesting. It's almost like doing the longtail cast on.
so I want to make a garter stitch cast on for a shawl would I just follow your first instructions and then transfer those stitches right away to a needle remove the waste thread and start my pattern?
I'm a 13 year experience knitter, but i consider myself an experienced beginner, meaning I can do easy patterns to intermediate in difficulty. I found a hat pattern that calls for a provisional cast on. This is the first time I'll be trying it. I failed with the tubular cast on so fingers crossed I can get the hang of this one. I'm going to practice this and the crochet hook method. I still don't understand the reason for this style cast on to be honest. Is it used for a folded brim?
I try doing this but the stitches are too tight or when i am holding the provisional thread it creates those looser stitches, am I supposed to hold the provisional yarn throughout all my first stitches?
Do you have a version of this with a long tail? I'm trying out a new pattern that calls for this CO but it says to have a long tail. I've never done this kind of CO before but I really like your method compared to other TH-cam videos that include the long tail...any tips or suggestions?
iKNITS Nevermind, I think I was mistaken, Sooo sorry! Thank you for the quick response though, much apprectiated! It just says provisional cast on, I must have mixed up 2 dif patterns or something. 🙃🤣
You can cast on one extra and then when you turn around, you let it drop at the end of the row. It's possible to cast on several extra stitches and just count when you do the second row and let the extra stitches go..
I’m new to provisional cast ons. You cast on 10 stitches, but when you went back to pick up the provisional cast on stitches you only picked up 9. Is this correct or am I just confused?
nicolecatherine I think she picked up 9 then then 10th at the end she picked up afterwards when untwisted because it's twisted when the spare yarn is in there
I am not sure why, but the first stich you make actually makes two? I don't know why so I just worked one less stich. Not sure how to avoid it, but hope that helps
Looks good with this method. But I have >256 stitches to knit in a round, can I use this method ? and how long should I estimate for the scrap yarn ? Is it must as long as my working yarn length for the 256stitches ? Hope I understand correctly, lol !
Jo Lim sure you can! A way you can estimate how long your yarn should be is to wrap your yarn around the needle however many stitches you need to cast on and go from there. Does that make sense?
Love most all of your tutorials but, this has got to be the most difficult and time consuming cast on I've ever seen! Hope it helps someone else but think I will stick with the long tail cast on....lol
I just find this super confusing… why is my pattern calling for this again? Anything I can do to avoid this? Why can’t I use my usual cast on? This old dog isn’t very good at learning new tricks…. 😵💫
There is something so satisfying about your matching your nail color to the yarn. Thanks for that attention to detail!
I wonder if that was coincidental...
Love it! Super easy... plus I love that you don't spend a whole lot of time chatting and just fiddling with the yarn. You jump right in...! I'll also check out the newer version which I saw posted in the description
FINALLY a method for a provisional CO that doesn't require a crochet hook! Thanks so much for this.
T Nicholas haha I am SO glad you like it! It's super easy this way
UOnyh4ch3aw&list
Im not a fan of the one with the crochet hook either. I crochet left handed but i knit right handed.
This is indeed the easiest provisional cast on method I’ve seen. Thank you!
I tried many videos and was about to give up. I can’t crochet and I found using the extra cable technique tricky. This was clear and simple. I played it on 0.5 speed which helped even more! Thanks.
The best PCO on TH-cam. Thank you!
So easy! Even though I am an experienced knitter I have never done this technique before. I'll be using this very often now. Thank you!
Thank you. This was so easy and you reacted enough times for me to pick up the rhythm. And, I LOVE that your polish matches your example.

Thank you for your video, most kind of you.
Thank you. Going slow and repeating the movement made it easier to follow.
what is this cast on suppose to help ? be more stretchy ?
Fantastic! Thank you so much!
And I loved how your nail polish matched the yarn.
Thank you so much. As always, it took me a while to get the hang of this, but it works great and turned out perfectly, and what a time saver! And thanks to Vivian for the suggestion to use a larger needle.
Great video! I’m left handed and crochet left handed but knit right handed. This is so much easier for me.

Sharon Lauro yay! Let me know what you think!
Thank you SOOOO Much. I knew there was a way. I experimented for months. Finally Found Your video!!!. Just wish I would have found it months ago.
Thank you for this! Super helpful and easy to follow.
Thank you so much, I finally got it. I have tried different knitters to try and learn this and until you it just didn't click😁 thank you💜
This method is the best!
So easy thanks! If you had to cast on 280 sts, you might suggest a way to pause, and then pick up where you left off correctly.
Thanks for this! After a few rewatches, got my project started with your help.
Great clear instructions. Thank you
Fantastic tutorial, first time doing a provesional cast on. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!
Thanks very much. This makes sense. Subscribed!
Wow! I picked that up really fast. Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial! Its super easy to follow and done easily too! Kudos to you!
Here is a helpful hint... Use a larger needle and cast on loose to make removing scrap yarn later it easier..
OMG thank you. You made this so easy.
Best one I've seen!
Great video, thank you!
Thank you so much! Excellent job -- you make it really clear and simple!!
Thank you for the video n pattern❤
Love how your nails match the yarn! I'm excited to try this technique. I hate picking up from the daisy chain, but do you suggest this method for a project with several hundred stitches? It's gonna be a pain, no matter what I suppose
Hayley Robertson
I used it for 100 and it looks really good and was the easiest cast on i tried for that project.
Did you try it?
THANK YOU! Can't wait to try this!
This is amazing. I will definitely use this method when I need to pick up stitches to finish off a project with a different stitch.
Thanks for this. It’s Genius!! I am planning a top-down sweater in the round but want to put a polo or cowl neck on to finish it off. Suddenly, it’s an easy option. Yay! (Cool nails, btw.😊)

Is knitting the cast on stitches part of the cast on or the first row of the pattern? Thank you!
so I want to make a garter stitch cast on for a shawl would I just follow your first instructions and then transfer those stitches right away to a needle remove the waste thread and start my pattern?
QUESTION CAN YOU DO A VIDEO USING THIS CAST ON WITH TWO COLORS??
Very good - I reckon I could use the cable of a spare circular needle instead of the scrap yarn.
Thank you ❣️

Yes or a tubular cowl orr starting short rows for toes for socks
I try doing this but the stitches are too tight or when i am holding the provisional thread it creates those looser stitches, am I supposed to hold the provisional yarn throughout all my first stitches?

Logan Bishop wait does it call for the provisional cast on, or a long tail cast on?
iKNITS
Nevermind, I think I was mistaken, Sooo sorry! Thank you for the quick response though, much apprectiated! It just says provisional cast on, I must have mixed up 2 dif patterns or something. 🙃🤣
What happens when you need to cast on an odd number or stitches?
You can cast on one extra and then when you turn around, you let it drop at the end of the row. It's possible to cast on several extra stitches and just count when you do the second row and let the extra stitches go..

My pattern calls for casting on 27 and I've tried it twice and both times end up with 28. What am I doing wrong?
I am not sure why, but the first stich you make actually makes two? I don't know why so I just worked one less stich. Not sure how to avoid it, but hope that helps
What am I doing wrong? Got technique from great video but as I do it, it's one stitch, but when counting, it is two stitches.
Susan Holton you're doing it right. It makes two stitches when you do it once.
If you're knitting in the round, do you join first and then knit?
@@iKNITS this is what I was wondering, great method!

looks tight and the sound keeps cutting out

tina mccartney oh this is just if you need to keep your first row of stitches "live". I wouldn't do this for a normal cast on.
Gotcha...
I just find this super confusing… why is my pattern calling for this again? Anything I can do to avoid this? Why can’t I use my usual cast on? This old dog isn’t very good at learning new tricks…. 😵💫
You went too fast
Bjarb J try this updated one: th-cam.com/video/HoyW8rasE0w/w-d-xo.html
I am not watching any videos with garish nail polish. I want to see technique, not various ideas of fashion.
J Camp what?
0MG that is so judgemental and offensive. Allow me to thank you for the great video!
J Camp. Your comment is very rude. Great teaching video.
