I honestly dont think they’re putting up bad numbers, luis figo and others had similar numbers when they won their ballon d’or so its not too wrong, but the issue is that messi and ronaldo spoiled us. No player in the history of football won the ballon d'or in a world cup year if he didn't take part in it despite how great his achievement in club was. At the moment the world cup final sees Messi facing Mbappé, Haaland's chances to win were zero.

In my opinion, football has been more open ever since Messi and Ronaldo left Europe and right now there’s no unanimous best player in the world and it’s part of why the Ballon Dor is so open this year and many players have made a case to win this award. As we speak many of the players in European football are on the same level and reaching the standards of these 2 is so difficult and that’s what we have to accept as I don’t like when making an argument that one of Mbappe Bellingham Vini Haaland or Kane is the best player in the world, people immediately start comparing them to Messi and Ronaldo.
By every metric, Kylian Mbappe should be the face of football he’s supposed to be the best player in the world, he hasn’t looked anywhere near his best for France at the EUROs, even during his final months at PSG, he wasn’t firing on all cylinders for them in big games in the champions league, he’s being impacted by having to play with a mask and maybe him finally securing that move to Real Madrid has made him take his foot off the gas and the team as a whole have been shocking in attack and none of their players have scored a goal from open play, he in general isn’t playing like he’s the best player in the world. Jude Bellingham scored that bicycle kick goal against Slovenia and he’s had his moments for England at the EUROs, for the most part, he has done nothing in most of the games apart from the one against Serbia not to mention that when Real Madrid won the Champions League, he was quiet in a lot of the big games in the knockout stages when it mattered the most and he’s a combination of being a good player and someone who lives off of Madrid PR because as he has a lot of ability and he has come up with important goals time and time again, he’s not a “Ballon Dor caliber player”, Vinicius Junior who’s the frontrunner for the Ballon Dor has continued to be underwhelming for Brazil and doesn’t always translate his club form onto the national team.
We’ve seen countries like Slovakia Slovenia Romania and even Georgia make it out of their groups during the EUROs and at least get to the RD of 16, meanwhile Erling Haaland someone who’s a world class striker going into his prime is struggling to qualify for major tournaments with Norway even though in terms of talent their team isn’t that bad and he is part of their “Golden Generation”, besides as prolific as he is at scoring goals which is the role of a striker, his overall game is so limited and as a result of that he’s another player who’s not at the caliber of being a Ballon Dor winner, he also goes missing in too many big games, in general number 9s like him can never truly be the best footballer in the world. Harry Kane is an elite striker, but how can a guy who has never won a trophy in his career be seen as the best player in the world, I rate him highly because of his individual ability that alone matters and the amount of goals he really scores for club and country, the problem is that he doesn’t have the trophies to back it up, he’s also not been all that great at the EUROs either. Phil Foden someone who was the best player in the premier league last season is a different player every time he plays for England and he doesn’t make the same impact for his country than he does with his club, Florian Wirtz had a historic season where he was the best player on a Bayer Leverkusen team that won almost every trophy in every competition without losing a game and he was getting Ballon Dor shouts, at the EUROs, he’s been overshadowed by Jamal Musiala as he’s been Germany’s most standout player. Even Toni Kroos he’s had a perfect 10/10 career for Real Madrid he’s playing so well right now and is bossing the midfield for Germany at the EUROs, assuming they win the tournament, he’ll probably win the Ballon Dor and by the time the awards ceremony starts, he would’ve already retired. I guess no one deserves the Ballon Dor this year.

Shouldn’t matter if someone is retired if they are just that good. Kroos wanted to end his career at his peak and he definitely did. Winning the CL without Ronaldo and was a top 2 team with Germany in the EM after Germany not even reaching the knock out stage before in Worldcups are huge accomplishments. Kroos always played a big part for his team, only the fact he ain’t scoring goals shouldn’t lessen his chance in a fair voting for the best player. I mean just look at his stats.
I think the golden ball is gonna come down to Madrid players of Bellingham and Vinicius with possible outsiders of Florian Wirtz and Kylain Mbappe.
This year we do have some other people who don’t play for huge clubs but we’re still phenomenal

Defenders are constantly screwed over in Ballon d'Or conversations. It was already harsh for them to win, but now, post-Messi and Ronaldo, it has become a matter of "who scored the most?" so it will be impossible for a defender to actually win.
Like, imagine if the Netherlands win the Euros: suddenly Frimpong would have had a glorious season where he only lost *one* match the whole time and won 3 trophies (with one lost final). But no one would seriously think "let's give him the Ballon d'Or".

A problem with modern football is that, nowadays, people just look at the stats and think "oh this player is better than this other due to stats". Something few people would have done so, in previous eras.
When Baggio was barely winning any trophies, or Ronaldo was receiving the Ballon d'Or with only 9 goal contributions the whole year, no one was questioning how did they get considered World Class players, because it's not just "who wins more" or "who scores more".
I feel like we could have a parallelism with basketball. We've got Kobe Bryant and LeBron James' careers overlapping (13 years between LeBron's debut and Kobe's retirement), and then LeBron had to compete with Steph Curry. These players have set basketball standards so high that people do feel like the sport has fallen off.
Not to mention, the "poor" stats that Vinicius and Bellingham have pulled off would have made them Golden Boot contenders in pre-2010 football. Vinicius literally scores as much as Shevchenko, a top striker who even won the Ballon d'Or. Bellingham is pulling the strings in midfield for Real Madrid just like Nedved did for Juventus in 2003, a year when he won the Ballon d'Or (which retroactively became a controversial one 20 years later just because "Henry had more goal contributions that year").
Football is literally back at where it was before Ronaldo and Messi made it big, and basketball will probably take some time, but could eventually return to pre-Kobe and LeBron days (although it might be tougher since there was the Michael Jordan era before then, and before *that* there was also the Larry Bird-Magic Johnson era). Let's just try to enjoy this game

I think theres too many options for the ballon dor. I believe that there is too much bias for attacking players in this, but the sports writers all like goals and creative attacking talent. Theres been many great defenders that deserve it, but never win it. For me though, i believe Vini jr will wim because the media works closely with these sports writers that vote on the player to win

The difference between him and every other player is that he constantly caps good team performance, but the sports writers care more about these bigger matches and stats, where players on his team (both national and club) will have better stats even though they play quite a bit worse than him

Not a long time Football fan and mostly play FIFA and related games so my interest is more like seasonal in and out but one thing I cam to realise leaving the MEssi and Ronaldo Era aside, it's just that both has set the standard so high that the normal numbers of the Vini and Bellingham are comparable to Pre Messi and Ronaldo Era.
