I really don’t get why ppl were upset it was supernatural - if you wanted a crime procedural, watch Silence or Seven or Zodiac. Longlegs is and was always clearly supernatural and horrifying
When Lee asks longlegs who his accomplice is he says something about her mother being the ''7th she'', doesn't that imply that there were previous women delivering the dolls?
This movie had me so hyped up and did not disappoint! I spent the 20 bucks to see it. Wow, just wow! It was a feeling of dark, impending doom. A dark cloud hanging over Lee when in actuality it was Satan! I loved Nick Cage in Mandy. That was a mind-blowing, surrealistic, psychedelic, dreamscape. And now, Longlegs. I missed so much that I will have to re-watch it. Happily. ❤
Anthony Perkins was absolutely brilliant in Psycho, but also in Psycho 2, which in a very worthy successor to the original. Definitely check it out if you haven't.
So so so, I may be reaching... The amount that the characters use the words LONG in their general conversation throughout the whole movie really stuck out to me! SO MANY TIMES.
They set horror films in the 80s and 90s because of social media and cell phones, they didnt have to put any President on the wall, they could have just said it was the 90s at the start, cell phones can really break a horror movie, unless its Scream, otherwise they have to come up with the old"oh the phones dont have any signal out here"trope...and that just immediatly takes you out of a serious horror.
What an excellent review! Also the previous one you made about this movie. All the details and the work you put into making this. Definitely subscribing!
Here's something I don't see many people talking about: a veiled reference to Jodie Foster who of course played Clarice Starling in _The Silence of the Lambs._ When Lee is invited by her boss Carter into his home, she has this exchange with his daughter: MISS RUBY: Did you always want to be an FBI agent when you grew up? (or something along those lines) LEE: Actually, I wanted to become an actress. MISS RUBY: But that'll mess you up. Jodie Foster had a career as a child actress, most notably in 1976's _Taxi Driver._ Watching this film caused John Hinckley Jr. to be so obsessed with her, so much so that he tried to assassinate the president just to get her attention. When he revealed why he did it, Jodie Foster was so traumatized she quit acting in theater plays.
I wondered why I recognized your voice! I’ve been listening to Down to Sleep for a while now. Loving everything you’re doing! Commenting to show support! ❤
Loved your deep dive (why I subbed) And loved this 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Good ‘ol Nick is so bonkers in this I can see why you wouldn’t want to dive back into that headspace. But we got the opportunity to see him go there & I think that makes it even more special
While it could be true that Longlegs was delivering dolls before Lee's mother was recruited by the devil, we cannot ignore what Longlegs says in the interrogation scene to Lee. That her mother was the "seventh she" who was given the same choice of crimson or clover - to accept the gift and destroy it yourselves or bow down. So there has to be other women before Lee's mother was roped in to do what she was doing.
11:40 I'm not sure how you didn't mention this in the first video. The giant goat man fading in and out of reality was such a big part of this film and I was shocked to not see it as part of the analysis
11:35 So many things to unpack from this movie. Not knowing it was about the devil is what made it more uncomfortable for me. I do not know what it was but throughout the movie I had this unsettling feeling like someone was in the room with me so to speak. I kept looking for longlegs in the background and at a point I swear I thought I was seeing things that weren’t there. When the reveal came and it turned out that it was the devil I was seeing … my stomach turned.. as someone who grew up with a very religious mother who warned me about the devil so much I just rebelliously ignored her warnings. This movie brought me to the realization that my mother was 100% right. When you look at the real world and you see all of the horrible things humanity has done , you can’t help but realize the devil is real. The most terrifying thing about it is you can’t prove it .. If your argument against “God” is because you can’t see him so he can not be real I beg you all…. Open your eyes and look around very closely and you will see the devil!
There he is… the birthday boy! 🎉 Thanks for this great video and explanation! Happy birthday! My bday was july 3rd and the fact that this film was released on the month of july means a lot to me. I really resonate with the part about Oz Perkins wanting the movie to be set in the 90’s… I agree, great films were made in that era and also, my mother died in the 90’s when I was a teenager so I can relate with what he said about his dad’s passing and dealing with it while becoming a young adult; because it happened to me too. I have always found comfort in horror movies since I was a kid but I can honestly say Oz is really talking to me and to and entire generation. But the cherry on top is Nic Cage! I have always been a huge fan of his so this movie having him as the satanic psycho makes me so happy and it is such an amazing feeling and experience over all! ❤also I love how Lynchean this movie is in a way, because I love David Lynch films but that is just my personal opinion. Anyway, I can’t wait for the film to be released on DVD!!! Thanks again and Cheers!
12:08 you missed one of the devils appearances in the film, at 31:00 while she’s decoding her letter, he appears behind her in the doorframe, I had my eyes on the background that whole scene knowing some bullshit was gonna show up and I’m so happy it did.
I think the connection to Silence of the lambs is actually pretty obvious. Lee is Clarice, Carter is Jack Crawford, and most notably the Head of the hospital where Carrie Anne is institutionalized speaks and acts like Dr. Chilton
-some “mirroring” I noticed (spoiler territory) “The Seventh She” -in scripture, the prophet Enoch is referenced as “The 7th He” or “The 7th Descendant of Adam. Who prophesies to the wicked “the judgement of God” Longlegs: “The 7th She”-Ruth Harker, brings about the malevolence of Satan The 12 apostles: Longlegs: b4 Lee jumps in on this dead in the water case, there were 10 family murders. After decoding the messages, they find out about the Camera family, the father w/the axe. Carrie Anne survived cause she was at school, but jumps off the building while Harker is interviewing Cage =11 Then, Lee’s boss, Carver & his family =12 (or cause the daughter survived-the hispanic family they find? Could be wrong on this-maybe a reach?) Crimson & Clover: -from the song by Tommy James/The Shelldons; Crimson means “love that flourishes behind the door/home Clover-a flower that blooms Longlegs: Crimson-accept the “gift” (doll) & see hatred flourish, murdered family Clover-accept helping him, “bow, bow way down”-a belief in Satan & his work will be an idea/belief that blooms Also (not mirroring, but an answer)-some people thought that the doll’s eyes opening were “an attempt at a jumpscare”-No no; Perkins isn’t using that The doll’s eyes symbolize that in that moment-Carrie Anne woke from her catatonic state. Exactly why Carrie Anne “thinks she’s seen Harker”-she sees through the pov of her doll
Another hidden devil appearance I saw while watching this in theaters: When agent harker is in her house, looking out at the window after cracking the code of the letter, the Devil's shadow is standing right behind her to the left of the screen. The shadowy figure is so big in the frame that it can be mistaken for the darkness of the room, but you can see the outline of the horns.
@@BPF80MCar-vi1pg Also the film "Oddity" also has a female psychic solving a murder and the story features a psychopath and a life-sized occult doll . The payoff is more satisfying but the lack of a coherent POV character lets the film down
there is another shot of the devil super quick when Lee comes home. Right before she opens the door and turns the lights on, the devil is right there really close to camera
There's another appearance I think when she's in her childhood room. There's a dark corner that looks like it has an outline in it. And I think one more when she's reading the card he left her in her house.
I for one loved the idea that a murder thriller ended up being a supernatural horror. Generally a horror fan is inclined to like either one or the other but the mix of the two ended up great.
The movie is unsettling. It lingers. For me, that’s worse than terror. It’s normal to be terrified if someone attacks you. There’s nothing at all unusual about that reaction. When a movie gets under your skin, that’s unusual.
Happy Birthday. And speaking of birthdays my birthday in on the 14th of April so I left the theatre being like “was I only allowed to grow up? What is my mother not telling me?”
Whenever I see a video titled "XYZ movie explained" I tend to immediately assume that's going to be a flattening or dumbing down of the story. Channels like Let Me Explain and FoundFlix are the worst offenders for stuff like this, often barely understanding the themes to begin with and giving just the worst interpretations. This is one channel that definitely does not follow that trend and I'm so glad about that. It's easy to tell that you genuinely have an appreciation for these films and you're not just pumping out content. Keep up the great work.
Happy birthday! And I’m so upset because I was looking close throughout the movie but yet missed so many of the appearances. Might have to watch it again. 😂
There are actually 2 more sightings of the devil. On the left side in the doorway after coming back in her cabin (reading the note) and to left again by the doorway-ish, when she’s looking in her chest in her room. 😈😈
U can actually see some kind of darkness in the scene where harker is in the bathroom and then it flashbacks to something, when it goes back to harker in the bathroom the window is covered in darkness whereas before the flashback it wasn’t
Your videos made me love the movie even more especially the ending! I missed so many details in that last scene. I didn’t like it the ending first and now I can’t wait to watch again!
Happy birthday! No video I have seen so far has mentioned or asked what happened with all the dolls. As far as I know, they aren’t mentioned in the police reports from the murder scenes. No one seems to know about them other than Longlegs and the mother and then the families that get the dolls. Where do they go after the families have been slaughtered?
Curious about the numbers in the body of the work- 9th birthday, 9 circles of hell. Also the choice of the tech device in coroners lab, looks like it’s an ultra sound device, orb makes a ringing tone. Then, Cage is singing and the viewer hears very similar ringing tone when he hits the high note. Maybe random but was noticeable.
you missed a couple shots of the devil in the back. There's one to the left of her in the scene where she's reading the 9th bday card longlegs leaves in her house (right before the phone rings). There's also another one when she's a kid putting things in her chest during the flashback.
I was thinking same! Just leave it as a one and done. It's more effective that way. Look at what happened with the silence of the lambs.... sequels are ehhh compared to brilliance
What is the symbolism behind the missing head on Miss Ruby's trophy and their conversation? Also funny how the movie ends with both Harker and her boss "looking too long" at the doll
I wonder if it has any correlation with Ruby’s devil doll remaining intact at the end? Like, the trophy’s head is missing, Lee says something about how finding the head would be more her responsibility, and because the trophy’s head is never found/the doll’s head isn’t destroyed, maybe Ruby is cursed to remain under the influence of the devil? but idk i’m just spitballing. Also Lee could/should have just destroyed the doll’s head with a blunt object if she didn’t have any bullets ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
simple thought is foreshadowing. doesnt matter if youre the best, you will still lose your head/sanity. also it could be a symbol for the dolls freeing the posessed, when the heads are destroyed. the devil wants to play, so he gives her little hints. like the shadow coming closer, the details do so too. but those are just random thoughts.
The trophy was her accomplishments, it was part of her work. The doll at the end wasn’t shot and didn’t lose its head because the trophy had already lost its? Maybe? The devil playing tricks.
The part of the conversation about fathers wanting to keep their daughters young and innocent is quite foreboding as Lee is the only child allowed to grow up. All the other children are killed stopping them from ever aging or growing up.
Wow my friend, great video, I can’t believe I miss so many of the devil. That’s the kind of jump scare I like, the one that is so hide but at the same time was always so there in your noise that when you go back and rewatch the film you are like “….f’ck…..”. Great video
A little late, but Happy Birthday! It was a blast going into this movie without any exposure!😄 ...Also, this movie would explain why my basement's been so quiet lately. I guess Stan wasn't lying about being busy with a new gig... 🤔
So I like the idea that Long Legs looks the way he does because he was a glam rocker, but I actually took the face paint and plump face to resemble trying to look like a porcelain doll.
Happy Birthday (late). I'd love to see more about the codes in the card and at the crime scenes. They sort of get dropped half way through, but maybe I'm missing something?
I understand that's it's technically their "purpose" but I've never been a fan of people judging horror movies by their scariness. As both a person who has watched horror movies for over 20 years and who also comes from a country where the majority of food is world-renowned for being extremely spicy, I _(perhaps ironically)_ feel a strong similarity between spicy food and horror movies, i.e. it feels like many spicy food fans care more about the food being as spicy as possible rather than *_actually tasting good,_* vice versa. I also personally feel that many satanic / possession movies feel somewhat underwhelming and almost silly. Not in the "spiciness" sense, though said movies often further bolster my opinion; most of them just feel like cashgrabs written with very little true desire to present a genuinely good "recipe", so to speak. I was very happy to consider Longlegs to be an exception, and your insights and analysis have helped a lot with this. I love how the makeup allowed us to witness a Nic Cage performance even more unhinged than we've come to expect, and in that respect it sometimes feels like a movie made for Nic Cage and no other. It feels like we can see Cage knew he'd never top Hopkins with cheap mimicry and Monroe knew she'd never top Foster the same way either. It feels so much like Lambs while genuinely different enough to be a force of its own. I actually think the TV show idea would work better than multiple Longlegs sequels.
This movie is absolutely genuine and superb on its own! Thank you for your excellent recaps....Nick Cage is an actor who is diversifying and evolving in his whole life as an actor. Incredible performance here. Mandy has been my favourite until I saw Long Legs.

@sdqsdq6274 people are entitled to their own opinions, yours is just wrong
@@zwryy7622 that's the dumbest comment I've seen in a while 🤣 you really acknowledged that opinions are individual to each person then invalidated their opinion because you didn't like it?
I really don’t get why ppl were upset it was supernatural - if you wanted a crime procedural, watch Silence or Seven or Zodiac. Longlegs is and was always clearly supernatural and horrifying
When Lee asks longlegs who his accomplice is he says something about her mother being the ''7th she'', doesn't that imply that there were previous women delivering the dolls?
Obviously yes.
Nicholas Cage says he doesn’t like violence and doesn’t wanna do violent movies. Just watched Mandy, Color Out of Space, and Willy’s Wonderland
Will watch Color Out of Space
This movie had me so hyped up and did not disappoint! I spent the 20 bucks to see it. Wow, just wow! It was a feeling of dark, impending doom. A dark cloud hanging over Lee when in actuality it was Satan! I loved Nick Cage in Mandy. That was a mind-blowing, surrealistic, psychedelic, dreamscape. And now, Longlegs. I missed so much that I will have to re-watch it. Happily. ❤
Lmao, loving rhe random pictures of the actress Maika Monroe being goofy on the set in both reviews. Good vid!
Definitely subscribing!
there he is, the birthday boyyyy~ happy birthday! good video
Probably my favorite line in the whole movie
@@EricSleightlyabsolutely one of my favorites too!
i thought it was a trex song
There he is!!!! Seriously, loved these videos can’t wait to see what you do next.
Here's something I don't see many people talking about: a veiled reference to Jodie Foster who of course played Clarice Starling in _The Silence of the Lambs._ When Lee is invited by her boss Carter into his home, she has this exchange with his daughter:
MISS RUBY: Did you always want to be an FBI agent when you grew up? (or something along those lines)
LEE: Actually, I wanted to become an actress.
Love your voice. It’s so soothing..
literally so excited for this i just watched the other video this morning lolll
0:31 MAN That caught me off guard my headset is maxed in the middle of the night 😂
I wondered why I recognized your voice! I’ve been listening to Down to Sleep for a while now. Loving everything you’re doing! Commenting to show support! ❤
fire fire fire hiss having back-masked audio is A+
Loved your deep dive (why I subbed) And loved this 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Good ‘ol Nick is so bonkers in this I can see why you wouldn’t want to dive back into that headspace.
Obviously
Happy birthday! I just saw this In Theaters and your breakdowns make me want to see it again ASAP
11:40 I'm not sure how you didn't mention this in the first video. The giant goat man fading in and out of reality was such a big part of this film and I was shocked to not see it as part of the analysis
11:35
So many things to unpack from this movie.
Really agree with that last statement 🙌🏽
I felt so unsettled too. You explained it so well.
There he is… the birthday boy! 🎉
Thanks for this great video and explanation!
Hey, happy belated birthday 🎉 my brother's birthday is 3rd of July
I did notice the devil behind the little girl. I was not expecting a supernatural twist. Explains all the murders. Great explanations.
This was great. The reveals of when the devil can be seen had me rewinding the movie and looking at each one. OMG so creepy!
Chilton
-some “mirroring” I noticed (spoiler territory)
“The Seventh She”
-in scripture, the prophet Enoch is referenced as “The 7th He” or “The 7th Descendant of Adam. Who prophesies to the wicked “the judgement of God”
Longlegs: “The 7th She”-Ruth Harker, brings about the malevolence of Satan
The 12 apostles:
Longlegs: b4 Lee jumps in on this dead in the water case, there were 10 family murders. After decoding the messages, they find out about the Camera family, the father w/the axe. Carrie Anne survived cause she was at school, but jumps off the building while Harker is interviewing Cage
=11
Then, Lee’s boss, Carver & his family
=12 (or cause the daughter survived-the hispanic family they find? Could be wrong on this-maybe a reach?)
Crimson & Clover:
-from the song by Tommy James/The Shelldons;
Crimson means “love that flourishes behind the door/home
Clover-a flower that blooms
Longlegs:
Crimson-accept the “gift” (doll) & see hatred flourish, murdered family
Clover-accept helping him, “bow, bow way down”-a belief in Satan & his work will be an idea/belief that blooms
Also (not mirroring, but an answer)-some people thought that the doll’s eyes opening were “an attempt at a jumpscare”-No no; Perkins isn’t using that
The doll’s eyes symbolize that in that moment-Carrie Anne woke from her catatonic state.
Exactly why Carrie Anne “thinks she’s seen Harker”-she sees through the pov of her doll
Good points 👍🏻
@@aces553 funny, was just looking at this now
Appreciate that👍 but I do see-
…man I typed way too much; lol
👍✌️
Another hidden devil appearance I saw while watching this in theaters: When agent harker is in her house, looking out at the window after cracking the code of the letter, the Devil's shadow is standing right behind her to the left of the screen. The shadowy figure is so big in the frame that it can be mistaken for the darkness of the room, but you can see the outline of the horns.
There's already a Longleg's sequel - the blackcoat's daughter
It's far superior
@@BPF80MCar-vi1pg Also the film "Oddity" also has a female psychic solving a murder and the story features a psychopath and a life-sized occult doll . The payoff is more satisfying but the lack of a coherent POV character lets the film down
Sequel?
@@SyphiList it was far worse in every way.... so boring and so absurd in its reveal
there is another shot of the devil super quick when Lee comes home. Right before she opens the door and turns the lights on, the devil is right there really close to camera
I wouldn't want it to be "just a serial killer" plot.
This movie captured magick in a brilliant subtlety.
There's another appearance I think when she's in her childhood room. There's a dark corner that looks like it has an outline in it. And I think one more when she's reading the card he left her in her house.
Happy birthday!🥳🥳🎉🎉thank you for the great video and amazing analysis!
I just subscribed because that was very well done! Love it! Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!
I've been following your gaming channel and read me to sleep how am I just now finding this one?! 😮
Happy birthday 🎉 best wishes to you. The analysis are really insightful, thankss
Please tell me, I am not the only one who was reminded of The Exorcist III- or Legion for those that have read the book- when everything was revealed.
Yes!! I said the exact same thing to my gf in the cinema. More than the superficial links to Silence of the Lambs
Happy Birthday. And speaking of birthdays my birthday in on the 14th of April so I left the theatre being like “was I only allowed to grow up? What is my mother not telling me?”
11:12, they already did with the movie called Fallen, w/Denzel Washington, John Goodman and Donald Sutherland.
I recommend the Blackcoat's Daughter directed by Oz Perkins as well.
Happy Birthday! Thanks for the videos! This movie gave me a lot to chew on and I LOVE it!
Xoxo
There's a devil appearance when Harker is first deciphering the letter in her house, he's over her shoulder to the left
There is one more appearance of the horn in longlegs. When she first gets the chest in her room you kind of see the shadow of the horns by the door.
There are actually 2 more sightings of the devil. On the left side in the doorway after coming back in her cabin (reading the note) and to left again by the doorway-ish, when she’s looking in her chest in her room. 😈😈
HAPPY BIRTHDAY dude! Fire material
the ball and smoke is also a twin peaks reference. for sure.
I also think the red room is a reference.
And maybe Lee’s house is a reference to the hotel:)
And the balls reminded me of Phantasm of course
The veiled doll face is extremely creepy. Truly one of the creepiest things I’ve ever seen in a movie
U can actually see some kind of darkness in the scene where harker is in the bathroom and then it flashbacks to something, when it goes back to harker in the bathroom the window is covered in darkness whereas before the flashback it wasn’t
The veiled character reminded me of Robert de Niro’s devil in Angel Heart
Loved your insight on the film! But please, let's not wish for a TV show dude 😂
Happy birthday and thanks for this video ♥
Your videos made me love the movie even more especially the ending! I missed so many details in that last scene. I didn’t like it the ending first and now I can’t wait to watch again!
This is the only horror movie so far this year that i like, going to see it again
In your previous vid, you said Cage was waiting with two suitcases. He was waiting with a suitcase and guitar case ! More Glam rock music reference.
Happy birthday! No video I have seen so far has mentioned or asked what happened with all the dolls. As far as I know, they aren’t mentioned in the police reports from the murder scenes. No one seems to know about them other than Longlegs and the mother and then the families that get the dolls. Where do they go after the families have been slaughtered?
the "just because" logic of this movie is off the charts
Something about Nic Cage saying he doesn't like violence is hilarious. The horror movies he's in are some of the most violent..
Hypocrisy in Hollywood? Naaaah
Maybe random but was noticeable.
i am OBSESSED with this movie; i haven’t felt an overarching sense of dread since SMILE and Silence of the Lambs 🕷️🕸️🪆
The devil also appears behind Lee when she's sitting in her home, reading the letter Longlegs left. The devil is lingering behind her left shoulder.
you missed a couple shots of the devil in the back. There's one to the left of her in the scene where she's reading the 9th bday card longlegs leaves in her house (right before the phone rings). There's also another one when she's a kid putting things in her chest during the flashback.
If a sequel does happen, I hope they don't give an origin story. What makes horror movies work is being open to theories and interpretations.
I was thinking same! Just leave it as a one and done. It's more effective that way. Look at what happened with the silence of the lambs.... sequels are ehhh compared to brilliance
Hope ya' had a fantastic Birthday mate! WOO!🍕🍕
You missed a time the devil appears. When she is working out the cypher from Longless letter he is over her shoulder in the doorway.
I think it symbolises she lost her head (is under the spell of the doll) at the end and will not be able to find it (herself) back.
There was some shadowy long legs on the shed behind the barn where Harker and Blair Underwood found the doll under the floor. The Devil was there.
Yes
Wow my friend, great video, I can’t believe I miss so many of the devil. That’s the kind of jump scare I like, the one that is so hide but at the same time was always so there in your noise that when you go back and rewatch the film you are like “….f’ck…..”. Great video
Great vid!! Happy B-Day!
A little late, but Happy Birthday! It was a blast going into this movie without any exposure!😄
...Also, this movie would explain why my basement's been so quiet lately.
I would love a prequel explaining how longlegs became a servant of the man down stairs
Oh boy, watching this it took me a while realize me and Harker have the same birthday. Great.
Can you guys do Speak no evil next? Btw love your channel cause your analysis of each part is clear and you guys break it down very nicely thank you so much for that
