    Well done on tackling this yourself. My first full rebuild was on a Triumph Spitfire many years ago. I had never done anything close to that before, but when it was finished it was such a great feeling of accomplishment to drive it to it's first show. Looking forward to seeing you out on the road.

      Thanks Timothy! It's definitely been a worthwhile journey. This was my first flat six. The most challenging one by far.

    Whoa, interesting that the whole bottom end fits inside that carrier!

      It's also hard to see how heavy that crank assembly is. 70lbs I'd guess? The rest the short block with pistons might not weigh that much.

    I have a 997 with a Jake Raby engine in it. its soooo sweet. its also a 4.0 and has a ton of torque but the best part is not worrying about an IMs issue or bore scoring.

    I wonder whether is there a way to prevent such a rather common issue as bore scoring,let obviously apart wise use and thourough maintainance.
    I mean how to keep bore scoring from happening on a high mileage engine which apparently is still working properly.
    That could be way cheaper than facing the damage once it comes about.
    In essence,when reading of 997 full engine rebuild should I presume that some mod has been done in order to fix such a weak point ? Thanks for any info on this subject.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the typical solution, bore the cylinders won't work. You need a stronger sleeve to be inserted. I used LN engineering Nickies if you are curious.

      @@997Dad Thanks for sharing your experience.
      I feel pretty much surprised at Porsche doing such a mistake : quite a predictable weak point in the MK1 engine project...Thanks again for your answer.

    Hi, thank you for the vids. The step by step engine build guide at 11m.30s you talked about, was that by Jay Grabe? Sorry didn't catch that name the first time. All the best!!!

    Where did you buy the coated bearings? Didn’t they tell you to have the crank journals polished so the extra thickness of the coating is compensated for?

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are the same spec as the original bearings. I polished the crank only to remove any surface scratches and smooth out wear.

    • @KontoVonMir
      @KontoVonMir 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@997Dad if they are LN bearings they have thickness added due to the coating, at least slightly. But they recommend polishing the journals to compensate for that which you apparently did.

    New bearings.. you don't check for clearances?

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are no published specs for this. I did make sure they were all the same diameter, but there's nothing to do if it's off. They don't make oversized bearings nor did the rebuild videos or forums call this out as hugely important. So if it can't be adjusted there's not much I could do anyway. I didn't have a spun bearing so, fingers crossed.

    Just curious is this the 3.6 or 3.8 and what size did you rebuild it too?

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a 3.8, I made it a 4.0

    Good evening, where did you get the torque specs for the build?

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the porsche manual unless it was aftermarket like rods etc then I used their specs
