I am winging it, I don't have a pattern. I have removed the collar from a knit sweater. Does anyone know how deep the V should be, and how long the trim is for the placket? Thanks!
It's hard to say, since there are various factors in play. The size you're sewing, the fabric, how deep YOU prefer it to be, etc. For a conservative V, having it somewhere in the top half of the armscye is probably a good starting point. For the length, I would measure the neckline and add a few inches, baste it on and see what you think. I think most plackets are about 3-4" from the top to the bottom. But you can adjust to your preferences, of course! Good luck!! ~J
When you say straight stitch the neckband to attach it to the neck opening, is that a true straight stitch or a knit lightning or narrow zig-zag? I’m still learning to sew with knits and I thought I should only use stretch stitches.
You can do either. On something vertical like a placket that does not need to stretch around the body, you can use a straight stitch. The placket does not need to stretch during wear so the stitches won't pop. Hope that helps! ~K
Off-topic but... How do you Americans know what 3/8'' inch is? Are you really sharp and can do the math or is it just always marked as fractions on your rulers?
Hi Houna. In the US, we use the imperial system. Our rulers and measuring tapes are measured in inched so 3/8" is a pretty standard measurement for us. If you use the metric system, 3/8" equates roughly to 1cm. ~K
