In the storyline he reveals at some point inbetween Xcom and Xcom 2/Xcom chimera squad the ethereals decided Mutons were to fucking stupid so they decided that since humans were intelligent and had very stable and malleable genetics they would use humans genes to splice into the other species. As a result they made mutons with human level intellect where as before hand he literally says that muton brains were mostly muscle prior to getting human genome.
The vipers have this bizarre sortof 50/50 thing where half of them are like sass masters that hate/ have disdain for machines and bipeds where the other half are extreme xenophiles fucking humans and blending into human society as much as possible

My biggest gripe is how some of the voices sound so unenthusiastic. Sounds like either the VAs could have cared less about the roles or they had so little direction it kinda makes a mockery of the characters.

They routinely dress soldiers in civilian clothes even in enemy within. At this point im surprised this is the first time they have dabbled with child soldiers. On the other hand, judging by the fade stuff going on it sounds like the elders put a 30 year kill switch into the hybrids. Meaning cherub is roughly equivalent to 20ish. But that does put zephyr at like 70 to 80 if she was hybridized 20 years ago.

@@magni5648 fine, let's put it the other way: pretty much every country was erased afted the invasion and 20 years of occupation, X-Com isn't a part of any state (as far as we know), they fight against alien invaders (or them as thugs and terrorists in chimera squad) - also not a country. And all that "Geneva convention" is a term for a basic rules of war that simply cannot be applied to X-Com, since it's not an any country's military. Btw this scenario is even portraited in the x-com like game Xenonauts, where after victory your chief schientist guy asks of what will happen next, since your anti-invasion coalition isn't a part of any government and possessing a huge quantity of alien weapons and materials that are capable to annihilate the entire planet.
I just love Verge, Cherub and Torque. Verge has that "I know what I'm doing", leadership through sheer know-how kinda vibe. Cherub's the heart of the team, it's plain to see. I think no team member has a negative banter with him, even if they are hostile at first. And Torque is just mean, downright devilishly evil at times. I swear, her "shh, shh" when she coils around an enemy gets me every time. Oh, and it was nice of them to bring back Jane Kelly as the director of the team. All in all, great characters! Even though they don't feel really alien, they make up for it with lovable factor. I hope to see them again in a sequel.
Torque definitely is most divisive. She is definitely meanest of them, but just as obviously most emotionally vulnerable. Axiom, Verge and others have gotten used to peace and society of multiple sapient species but Torque has known only killing and imprisonment. She is very unsocialized invidual. Assuming Vipers mature at same rate as humans and Ethereals left five years ago she was 15 tops when being captured. Could a child trained to be something like SAS-soldier and who has served in direct combat (of doing war crimes) be expected to be well-adjusted?

Strong agree. I love this game's writing and it makes me real hopeful for whatever they might do with XCOM 3. Giving soldiers dialogue is always going to be basically impossible with customizable recruits, sadly, but I'd love to see more HQ staff interaction.
@@InchonDM No its not, just work with what bannerlord does with its companions for example. They have a title like "wanderer" and the title gives them a specific personality and skillset. Could do something like that with xcom and further improve on it. Like experiences shaping the soldiers, if one nearly died by explosion damage for example and you rescue him, he gets extra loyal and thankful maybe, so lets say he would get a slight resistance to panic maybe and also the title "scarface" which makes him like 10% More resitant to explosive damage. Stuff like that right? Just thinking aloud here but its not impossible.
@@DHTGK While you are correct that the Sectoids received significant gene modding between the 1st and 2nd games (So that their brains could psionicly resonate with Humans better.), a lot of the alien races were gene modded in some way. Back during the first invasion the Vipers were the thin men, who are very much less reptilian and it's conceivable the aliens didn't bother to roll back all the changes they made to the Vipers DNA. Also, the base advent trooper uses Humans as the base. In Chimera squad specifically though, Axiom's bio directly calls out him having more human DNA than the invasion era Mutons.
I think they hinted something about Whisper and Torque with that small dialogue between them. Like they used to date each other but it didn’t work out. Now she’s just mad at him.

Verge's dialogue and voice acting are awesome. It's disappointing that they didn't make any kind of effort to have the other aliens (besides Verge) sound even a little bit alien... while they loaded up the human agents will all kinds of lame fake foreign accents.
Yeah they could have at least put some kind of distortion after-effect on them. I actively avoid playing Torque or Axiom because their normal voices are just too weird to me.

So I found out why they all talk like normal humans despite being aliens. Turns out the VA weren't told what characters they were voicing until the game came out.

Only thing I can think of is that they either knew each other from the Xcom 2 war. Or they were a... Relationship for a little while and broke up over something Whisper did (She does flip him off... Twice when he asked for a quote)
There was a theory on Reddit that Whisper was an XCOM soldier who killed Torque's former squad members (ADVENT) during the alien occupation, and inadvertently cause her to be more closed off in order to not have to go through losing another group of friends again. Apparently, she has an axe to grind on him.
I absolutely love the XCOM badges! I think it is because it seems like they are peacekeepers instead of a secret military force combating an invasion, or a resistance group forced to operate from the shadows.
Some of the voices definitely don't fit the aliens. It's kinda weird how they have a big muton who destroyed someone's items just for being in his way and yet his voice doesn't fit that at all
I'm hoping that there will be a good reason that XCOM is working with more xenos, it was a hard push for the skimishers alone! I'll stick to my xenonauts and ship nuking.
I have to say, Torque's voice is... not what I imagined coming out of a giant albino cobra monster. I mean none of them are, but she just sounds like the sarcastic female lead of an office work sit-com.

These are great, but it's the little conversations between the crew members at the start of each day that I'm enjoying. Especially the little flirty / respectful chats between Terminal and Patchwork. I get the feeling Terminal likes Patchwork, but it's taking some time for her to get Patchwork to open up.
Bruh i wonder how bradford would react to this snake date crap after fighting for 20 years of life agianst the aliens and seeing people wanting to get freaky with vipers.
Probably just happy he still has a planet to call home. Might even be nice for him to see the races that he knows were mostly either mind-controlled or lacking in free will actually being able to integrate with humanity rather than just being murder machines.
The voices sound as if they wanted to make a comic based animation rather than an XCOM game, filled with comedy more than what the series has been known for. The rogue advent troopers (I cannot recall their names, it's been years since I last successfully played) voice sounds too different from the ones introduced from XCOM 2: War of THe Chosen. The Psi guy acts like how I would expect one of their kind to really, voice is off though compared to their screeching. The Mutons carried a way deeper voice tone, similar to krogans. The Vipers I'm not too sure on though, most expect a hissed lisp with every S-word, but that can be overcome with time in any race; I really have nothing for them. Humans are just that, Humans.
Feels more of a up spirited teen drama rather than a project to reintegrate the now stranded and disconnected xeno’s. Could be a chance to see into their world, maybe have torque describe Viper culture and hierarchy, since the aliens from xcom 1&2 were manipulated by the ethereal into being their puppets.
Gotta say I love the banter between the agents I know people hate it because it isn't randomly generated agents with perma death, but I love the characters in this game alone
City 31 is reminding me of half life 2, which for those who don't know, takes place in a city 13. It begs the question, who would win? A combine invasion force, or the xcom aliens? what the combine lack in psionics they make up for in sheer numbers and technological advancement. But the aliens have even more advanced technology. It's an interesting concept
Also I think the combine would probably decimate the xcom aliens. I mean they basically drove an entire species to near extinction which is the nihlanths race which are literal gods, and probably a lot more things. Also pretty certain the advisors have psionic powers or telekinesis
Torque has some striking resemblance with Loona from Helluva Boss. Both are mean, sarcastic, a bit aggressive, somewhat insecure (at least, if I remember some of Torque's dialogues with other squad members), both are sexualized beyond belief by their respective fandoms... And yes, they both are voiced by Erica Lindbeck, lol

So when this game came out, I was upset that the mood from the previous two games was all but gone. It wasnt nearly as moody or dreadful as either of the previous games. But over time, I think I understand and accept why everything feels much more upbeat and hopeful. Its because for the first time, we are seeing an XCOM that isnt in an active war. They're peacekeepers, and its a lot easier to make friends and small talk when the entire world isnt on your shoulders.

In xcom 2, everyone won except the elders. The aliens are free and have moved in with the humans. This is a really nice game, story wise.

Only thing I can think of is that they either knew each other from the Xcom 2 war. Or they were a... Relationship for a little while and broke up over something Whisper did (She does flip him off... Twice when he asked for a quote)
There was a theory on Reddit that Whisper was an XCOM soldier who killed Torque's former squad members (ADVENT) during the alien occupation, and inadvertently cause her to be more closed off in order to not have to go through losing another group of friends again. Apparently, she has an axe to grind on him.

I absolutely love the XCOM badges! I think it is because it seems like they are peacekeepers instead of a secret military force combating an invasion, or a resistance group forced to operate from the shadows.

Some of the voices definitely don't fit the aliens. It's kinda weird how they have a big muton who destroyed someone's items just for being in his way and yet his voice doesn't fit that at all

well, the german localization team at least got axiom's voice better, there's a guttural growl to it that is just non negotiable.

These are great, but it's the little conversations between the crew members at the start of each day that I'm enjoying.
Especially the little flirty / respectful chats between Terminal and Patchwork. I get the feeling Terminal likes Patchwork, but it's taking some time for her to get Patchwork to open up.

Bruh i wonder how bradford would react to this snake date crap after fighting for 20 years of life agianst the aliens and seeing people wanting to get freaky with vipers.
Probably just happy he still has a planet to call home. Might even be nice for him to see the races that he knows were mostly either mind-controlled or lacking in free will actually being able to integrate with humanity rather than just being murder machines.

The voices sound as if they wanted to make a comic based animation rather than an XCOM game, filled with comedy more than what the series has been known for. The rogue advent troopers (I cannot recall their names, it's been years since I last successfully played) voice sounds too different from the ones introduced from XCOM 2: War of THe Chosen. The Psi guy acts like how I would expect one of their kind to really, voice is off though compared to their screeching. The Mutons carried a way deeper voice tone, similar to krogans. The Vipers I'm not too sure on though, most expect a hissed lisp with every S-word, but that can be overcome with time in any race; I really have nothing for them. Humans are just that, Humans.

Did they get the Tony Hawk Underground dialogue team on this game somehow? The vibe shift between this and XCom 2 is insane.
Feels more of a up spirited teen drama rather than a project to reintegrate the now stranded and disconnected xeno’s.
Could be a chance to see into their world, maybe have torque describe Viper culture and hierarchy, since the aliens from xcom 1&2 were manipulated by the ethereal into being their puppets.
This is definitely meant to be a lot more light hearted and less grim dark.
Gotta say I love the banter between the agents I know people hate it because it isn't randomly generated agents with perma death, but I love the characters in this game alone

City 31 is reminding me of half life 2, which for those who don't know, takes place in a city 13. It begs the question, who would win? A combine invasion force, or the xcom aliens? what the combine lack in psionics they make up for in sheer numbers and technological advancement. But the aliens have even more advanced technology. It's an interesting concept
Late comment but hl2 is in city 17.
Also I think the combine would probably decimate the xcom aliens. I mean they basically drove an entire species to near extinction which is the nihlanths race which are literal gods, and probably a lot more things. Also pretty certain the advisors have psionic powers or telekinesis

Torque has some striking resemblance with Loona from Helluva Boss. Both are mean, sarcastic, a bit aggressive, somewhat insecure (at least, if I remember some of Torque's dialogues with other squad members), both are sexualized beyond belief by their respective fandoms...

So they have a huge strong dude with anger issue in enclosed, tight environment. What could go wrong
So when this game came out, I was upset that the mood from the previous two games was all but gone. It wasnt nearly as moody or dreadful as either of the previous games. But over time, I think I understand and accept why everything feels much more upbeat and hopeful. Its because for the first time, we are seeing an XCOM that isnt in an active war. They're peacekeepers, and its a lot easier to make friends and small talk when the entire world isnt on your shoulders.
The only thing I dont like about Torque is that her voice is not... wierd enough
