  • Aretha Franklin's Until You Come Back To Me, the Bee Gees' Jive Talkin, Norah Jones' Don't Know Why, Chaka Khan's I Feel For You, Bette Midler's Wind Beneath My Wings... This is just a handful of the legendary artists and iconic hit recordings produced by 12 time Grammy Award winning producer, arranger and composer, Arif Mardin.
    "Amazing is an understatement. He was brilliant."
    So says the Queen of Soul in the Grammy nominated documentary, The Greatest Ears In Town: The Arif Mardin Story which chronicles the life and career of "One of the greatest producers of the 20th Century" (Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder, Atlantic Records) who produced more than 50 gold and platinum records with sales topping 50 millions units.
    Supported with generous archival footage, photos, music as well as with in-depth interviews with music luminaries and friends, Quincy Jones, Ahmet Ertegun and Sir George Martin, the film also shows Arif reuniting with many of the aforementioned artists as well as interviews and/or studio footage with Willie Nelson, Carly Simon, Jewel, Daryl Hall and many others to record what would become his final album, All My Friends Are Here.
    Culled from that album, the Greatest Ears In Town is named after the song co-written and performed by Bette Midler for her producer and friend in which she proclaims, "Mister Mardin make your music 'cause your music makes my day!"

    Not so many people know but 3 Turkish immigrants, Arif Mardin and the Ertegün Brothers have shaped (black) music forever and made so many legends we know today who they are. They helped find their sound, their image and give them a platform with (including but not limited to) Atlantic Records.

      He had the ability to take average and turn it into extraordinary. He heard what was and got creative people to be clearer.The results were magic.

      How did he come to do the work he became famous for?

    • @SonicSatori
      @SonicSatori 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      he started as studio manager (had grsduated from Berkeley College of Music) and worked under Tommy Dowd - next thing he's being asked to write strings - then strings to Dusty Springfields Dusty in Memphis and produced the Rascals "Good Lovin" - and the rest is all AMAZING American contemporary music history!!

      So his main skill was knowing how to arrange music to achieve a mood.

    I think of everyone he's worked with he had a pure deep passionate love for Chaka. He did all of her stuff in the 80's and really put her back on the map!

      @missmyasia ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She was always at the top of the charts…he didn’t put her back on the map, she was already there. You have to remember he started working with her during her wildly successful years with the band Rufus… When he met the 24 year old Chaka, there was a deep connection..She WAS his instrument……He loved her deeply and she too had/has a deep love and reverence for him. Their relationship was more like family. Chaka knew most of Arif’s family…in fact , the guy interviewing Chaka is his son Joe ….

      @TimLIFE91 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@missmyasia This comment wasn't for a debate about Chaka's success. I am one of Chaka's biggest fans and the youngest fan that have travelled the entire country to see her probably more than anybody outside of one other person. I say all of that to say no one can "school" me on Chaka and her career. Chaka has even stated out of her own mouth that had Arif not been with her through the 80's she would not be who she is today. I Feel For You album was the crossover song for her that gave her the commercial success as a solo artist. That was my point of saying "back on the map". Prior to that she was obviously known for her work with Rufus. So, if you were stuck on me saying "back on the map" let me correct it to "kept her on the map" if that helps you to feel better. I didn't ask for a lecture.

    As a kid, every album I liked (and mind you, this was by DIFFERENT artists), HE produced. And the productions were always, warm, yet intricate...smooth....and FUNKY! He was the ONE, y'all.
