    Hey nick. Excellent video as usual. I've benn using a scuttle for almost a year now. Best tip I can give is to put water inside the chamber and submerge the scuttle in hot water in your sink while you bloom your soap, that way it's nice and hot when you're ready. Also, I'd also suggest using primarily badger brushes (with metal handles, preferably) than boar/synthetic when using the scuttle. The badger hair holds the heat better and longer than the other brushes by far. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    I really enjoy my Crown King Scuttle. I face lather during the week, but enjoy the scuttle when I have more time on the weekends.

    Nick, I keep my scuttle hanging from a large cup-hook without the cork in it. That lets it drip and dry out after a shave, so it doesn't get mildewed. Just plug the hole when you're shaving.

    Nick, you may like to try holding the scuttle in the palm of your hand with the thumb through the handle. much less stress on the fingers and more control over the scuttle this way.
    I hope this helps.

    Hard water issue? I've found a great way to soften my shave. I place a small amount of Murray & Lanman Florida water into my water basin. It makes a fantastic rinse.

    I just got a scuttle about three months ago. I got an extra large green one from Leza in Kiev. It is very nice looking and does a great job. I like to submerge the scuttle in water along with my brush. Then I empty it and refill the hole with water. Depending on the soap you have to watch how hot the water is. Some soaps/ creams just get eaten up by too hot a water. I find using regular tap water as hot as you can get it after running about fifteen seconds is fine. My water out of the spout leaves a film, so I prefer to heat the water in the microwave for about 100 seconds right before putting it in the scuttle. I love mine and very strongly recommend scuttles. I use mine virtually every day.

    If you're a face latherer, and like warm lather throughout your passes, you may consider a brush scuttle to keep your brush (with loaded soap) warm.

    Nick,
    I have this exact same scuttle and I've had honestly nothing but issues with it.
    1. The depth/size of the scuttle make it harder to whip up later. I've found flatter bowls facilitate lather making, my go-to is a piece of tupperware still.
    2. Using hot water seems to dry out my soaps as they break down the fats found in them.
    I've tried using room temperature water, luke-warm, warm, and even a dry scuttle. I cannot achieve a lather that does not dry out with the scuttle. Is it the way I'm lathering? Do I need a different angle for my brush? It seems that the depth of the bowl isn't helping me.

    Hi Nick. 2 Questions: 1. How often do you use your scuttle? 2. Do you like PAA CAD scent or Gondolier scent better?

  • @sturley08
    @sturley08 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Nick, Great videos! Very thorough reviews!! Glad to see a scuttle vid. Are you still using it? I've been using mine for about a year and have found it very enjoyable. I shave my head too so the scuttle is great as it keeps the lather warm through both procedures. A suggestion if you have trouble keeping the water hot- use a candle base warmer.

    I love, love, love my Crown King scuttle. It helps to build a beautiful lather and there is nothing like a constant warm lather for every pass. Build quality is top notch. Fill with hot tap water before you get in the shower, when you get out of the shower dump out the water and add new hot water then lather. Very simple.

    Oh boy, soft water...I miss it so much! Nothing but hard water here now in our condo. Clean and safe township water but it's hard. In my old place I had soft water and my shaves were amazing. Yes, you can work around it, but it's still not the same.

    I use the same razor you're using in this video, but a vintage Gillette one. I bought it for 1€ at a flea market. I still haven't found a better razor yet. I do wonder if the head of the vintage Gillette is exactly the same as the Merkur version. I love the handle too. This razor gives me a good balance of aggressiveness and smoothness and the blade is always perfectly centered.

    Nick, that looks like a great knot on the brush, its very wide, good buy.
    I was wondering if you know if the scuttle can be microwaved???
    I might want to hit it for 30 sec to 1 minute with water in it if I need a bit more heat?

    • @timothymagee6643
      @timothymagee6643 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Timothy Magee Also, when you are finished with the scuttle I suppose you should capsize it for effective drying? It seems to me that due to its configuration it might be difficult to dry out effectively so you don't get any mildew in it.

    Hey Nick, I just received this scuttle last week and love using it. I have been a face latherer prior. I never see you use it in newer videos. I agree, that I am not sure I get a better shave using it, just a more enjoyable one with the lather being warm. Now that it is getting colder, I think the warmth will even feel better.
    What are your long term thoughts? Thanks.

    Hi Nick. Great video as usual. You make it very tempting to get a scuttle. I`ve had the Merkur 1905-6 for some time and really like it. Was thinking about a 34c but since they have the same head, I`ll probably just stick with the 1905. It pays to watch shave vids, you learn something new all the time.

    Hey Nick, I just started wet shaving and just recently switched from the van der Hagen razor (cheap DE razor from Walgreens) over to the Merkur 34cHD per your recommendation. When I am shaving, sometimes I can feel the blade against my skin, and other times I can't, is this normal? I didn't know if this is what is considered as "smooth" or not. I'm still getting good shaves with no irritation, so I'm not sure what it is. If you could answer, that would be great. should i feel the blade always with a smooth razor or never? Thanks!!

At $30-45 for the razor (depending on which handle/model you get) for an all brass razor, FaTip razors have to be some of the best deals you can get in DE shaving.

      So will a pot metal razor. And I don't feel like the Gentile is aggressive at all, in fact I didn't like it for a time because I felt the razor was finicky with the shaving angle, which doesn't happen with an aggressive razor. An aggressive razor has so much exposed blade that it shaves at most angles.

  • @MrMikesMondoVideo
    @MrMikesMondoVideo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry, Nick, but you had it reversed. Hard water is typically higher on the pH scale (alkaline), and soft water is lower. The minerals which made water hard - calcium, magnesium, etc - are alkaline minerals. It’s not so much the pH of the water as it is the calcium and magnesium ions of hard water that react with the soap to form scum, making lathering more difficult. Some soap makers add a chelating agent to assist in hard water.
    That error takes nothing from this or your other great videos.

    It's called tempering. Another way to do it, is full it with hot water, load your brush, then dump the water and refill the scuttle.

    I personally don't like or recommend Crown King, due to ex-CIA agent Douglas Smythe being a Pastry Warrior from Dessert Storm, but I can attest to the quality of a warm lather on your face after a long day. It's just perfect.
    Good video, Nick!

      What do you mean by "pastry warrior"?

    • @KablamX
      @KablamX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +totalanthony it's a joke since Douglas Smythe, the owner-operator of Crown King/Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements is a letting scumbag who's told people he or a family member were in Operation "Dessert Storm". He also told people he was a CIA agent.
      I could list all the scummy shit he did but I'm sure if you Google his name and "lies", the drama would be found without much trouble.

      totalanthony He also scammed a bunch of people in several ways -- listing incorrect ingredients, saying his recipe was made from scratch while giving people cheap melt-and-pour glycerine soap, conducting fake interviews with "other people" which was actually himself, fake reviews on his stuff, etc. The list goes on. One guy posted a pic of one of his HTGAM soaps having a thin top layer of the actual advertised soap, with the other 80% of that puck of soap being melt-and-pour glycerine you can get for extremely cheap. He's a real class act.

    Keeping your strop in the bathroom that high up will kill the leather due to the humidity. Best kept lower around the sink counter. Unless it's a vegan strop which may not be affected by the steam.
