I am originally from the Caribbean, where slurping food or having your mouth make any kind of noise while eating, is considered impolite. I have found out that slurping food or making ‘mouth noises’ while eating in China and Japan, is a compliment to the chef. Who knew!! This world is so full of differences and similarities, which is what makes it so beautiful.
Being raised in America, we were always taught to chew with our mouths closed, while growing up. At home (mom from Japan, dad American of Japanese descent), always slurped their noodles. I tried, but would always end up gagging myself, so I gave up. I’m planning on visiting family in Japan, sometime next year. I’ll be THE quietest ramen eater out there. I’ll just have to tell the chef how much I appreciate the food, I guess. 🤭
