    A trick I picked up from Rob Cosman when setting the saw to cut the DT's is to pinch the wood with forefinger and thumb and let your two fingernails create a solid shoulder for the saw to ride against when starting the cut. Just one of those little things that makes the job a tiny bit easier. I made a David Barron guide a while back but went back to my old method.

    Another added bonus of the ' extra ' timber out back of the drawers , especially the bottom drawers in a traditional cabinet with short legs and close to the floor is that of stopping mice coming up the back and getting into things .I believe in closing off the bottom under the lowest drawer .many older cabinets were left open for ventilation I assume ,however , mice will keep coming back . Dog was paying full attention , good to see . Tight even joints are a thing of beauty .

      @Woodworkingmasterclass  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, Thanks for the comment. Dust panels were generally used under all draws then, unfortunately came the cost cutting wars and quality slipped first to be sacrificed were the areas unseen by the unwary buyers. Hence rodent problems. Bob's a good watcher but a lousy doer! Cheers Steve

    Do you glue fix the bottom to the front board?

  • @granander
    @granander 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Since you work with almost all handtools, how did you cut the groove for the bottom?

    • @Woodworkingmasterclass
      @Woodworkingmasterclass  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do prefer hand tools but that's not to say I am restricted to them. I think I used a saw table for the Drawer Slips but if you want to be totally hand tools then a Stanley 45 or 55 would do the job so to a Stanley 71 or 71 1/2 you could use a dado plane or worst case a hammer and chisel. Cheers Steve

    I have a question about the drawer bottom, aren’t there risk of the bottom too expand and warp the sides?

    • @Woodworkingmasterclass
      @Woodworkingmasterclass  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Draw bottom will expand and contract in the lenght of itself which is catered for in the assembly. There is very little to no expansion width ways. Cheers Steve

  • @jlindsay8965
    @jlindsay8965 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What happened to the hide glue ?

  • @craigturner2756
    @craigturner2756 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    that drawer was fitted "squeaky" tight. Surely even the smallest rise in humidity would expand the wood and jam it in the frame. Would you not prefer even 1-2mm gap all round?

    • @Woodworkingmasterclass
      @Woodworkingmasterclass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Personally not, as it would rattle and shake from side to side when it was pulled and pushed. The expansion on timber is mainly on the tangential plain not the radial. I also am mindful of cutting drawers from 1/4 sawn sections of timber which again has the least potential of movement. A snug fit is a good fit in my opinion anyway. If you apply a rub of candle wax over the drawer slides and bottom of the drawer you will find that will also help overcome any tightness that may occur. Good question thanks for the comment. Cheers Steve

    I wish I would have found you months ago, Steve.
    Currently I am in a huge pickle because I have to build a night table, and the way i planned it - it didnt work out with the joints like i wanted them to. But your little table is so easy to build - i wish i had thought of the dovetail joints myself. Or would have taken another approach from the beginning.
    Could I send you a mail with my problem? Maybe you know a solution?
    Cheers, Markus

    why not screw the bottom into the front so it can move freely in the back?

    • @Woodworkingmasterclass
      @Woodworkingmasterclass  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, Because that would leave screws that could catch on the draw frame and also if there is a lot of stuff in the draw the back will sag. Cheers Steve
