Yay! Okay, so I'm sure there may be exceptions to this, though I haven't found any yet, but dinosaurs all have leg joints that go straight down to the ground, similar ours, birds, horses, etc., whether they walk on two legs or four. On the other hand, flying, swimming, or even other non-dinosaur land reptiles other have limbs that go out to the side (and then go down if need), think lizard, turtle, pterosaurs, and plesiosaurs.
@@InLiquidColor I always assumed that the term dinosaur was used for any prehistoric animal as a broad descriptor save for the mammals like Woolly Mammoth, Megaloceros ect.
@@InLiquidColor as a followup to this, are there large overall terms for those animal groups? if they're not dinosaurs, they have to have some other name right? :D
@@LycIrisAurora They were reptiles. The ones that fly are Pterosaurs, and the ones that swim are a little more complicated. Reptiles like Mosasaurs was more closely related to snakes while Ichyhyosaurs were in their own group.
OMG!!! I love dinosaurs and watercolor so this video made my heart super happy!!! It's absolutely gorgeous and I just love listening to you. Stickers please!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is such a cool idea! I did a white Rhino piece a couple months ago in honor of Sudan. He was the last white male rhino. Thanks for all of the dino info. I learned a lot I didn’t know about.
Wonderful painting as always Denise, Your teaching gene is showing through and you offer so much more information and insight to the subject that is featured in the AAC Selection. I hope you are getting settled into your new home and finding Texas accommodating, we are looking forward to seeing your next video and wishing you only good things!
We have the same favorite dinosaur!!!!! Watching that video immediately after this. I'm dinosaur *obsessed*!!!! So glad the chaos of moving hasn't stopped you from posting this video ☺🦕🦖💞
I am brown coat, I know you be brown coat too I immediately identified the dinosaurs in the thumbnail brilliant just brilliant Denise. Also I love the blues, it reminds me of the peacock piece you did with the white nights.
Love Firefly and Serenity. Watched them many times (enjoyed the talk bubbles at the end of your video - can hear Wash saying them!). Have you seen The Expanse? Best of luck on the relocation!
I am so ridiculously happy that 'extinct creatures' won! And the fact that you chose dinosaurs just makes me warm and fuzzy all over. Dinosaurs are personally one of my favorite things to draw aside from characters. I love how much leeway you have on the appearance. YES, James Gurney is the absolute best. I have all his picture books and can just stare at them for hours. Even have a couple posters up in my living room. His channel is super fun. I enjoyed watching you paint these dinos so much. And I like the info you gave on them as well. Did you know that the word 'thagomizer' actually came from a comic from the Far Side and paleontologists adopted the word because....well, it was perfect.
According to my brother, Wash’s dinosaurs are from a specific set that was sold around the time of filming. I have no idea what the name of it was but he swears they’re now a collectors item due to their use on the show. I’ll have to try and remember to ask him if he knows the name next time I see him.
Yo, watching James Gurney here was one of the ways I started trying/thinking about gouache, which makes it even more awesome that you’re using gouache here, too! I love dino theory, and how it’s always shifting. Which can be both fascinating and frustrating depending on whether or not you enjoy uncertainty and fantasy. That’s something I sort of touched on in my video, especially when I randomly remembered a few years ago when I learned that the brontosaurus was just totally accidentally made up! Whoops! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!!!
It's tricky when the fossils can be anything from juveniles to adults and they have to work it out. Brontosaurus was, and then wasn't, and now is again! Definitely changing a lot as we find out more :)
Denise I know you are moving or have moved, but once you are settled, I would love to send you what may be a really good replacement for Daniel Smith PO 49....Daniel Smith's new Quin Gold is not close to PO 49 IMO. I was lucky enough to get a PO 49 from my local art store to be able to play around and try to recreate it..... I have not seen anyone speaking about the combination I have made. Most people have suggested other brands instead. I think I have come super close to recreating PO 49 with a combo of 3 daniel smith colors (all transparant). I would love to hear your thoughts on my formulation. I am pretty new to watercolor so although I think the color is spot on (I may be wrong), how it performs may not be. I would love to hear your thoughts.
I am in the middle of that move, but really quickly, Oto Kano has a Quin Gold video up on her channel comparing the different brands I highly recommend!
I just said to my 5 year old that pteranodon's aren't dinosaurs and she immediately said 'of course not Mum, if they flew or swum they are reptiles', lol.
Hai Denise! Im a big fan of your channel just like the others~ I have just a lil question, Im in the intermediate level of doing watercolors, and Ive been researching on what watercolors to buy, im stuck with Holbein, and Sennelier, what do you recommend? If you have a different brand in your mind, what can you recommend me?
Denise has done some really good reviews already! Her Top 5 Favourites series has a watercolour brand episode that will give you some info and recommendations on both those brands :)
She's found love in Daniel Smith watercolors as far as I can tell XD but her top 10 is worth looking into if you're unsure or have a brand that's more accessible to you
Denise does a great job explaining what different brands do and do not do well, so after you watch her Videos you should go by DaVinci watercolor paints! I spent months looking into the different brands of paints when I returned to traditional painting I settled on mission gold but now I cannot believe DaVinci never crossed my mind. I just never even considered them and now I don’t want to use anything else! Oh and Denise has worked with this company and made a custom palette you might consider using! There’s my 2 cents! (And plug, I just hate it when I ask for a recommendation and don’t get one, so there is mine)
@@mjpete27 Thanks for the kind words. Just to explain, the reason I *can't* answer these questions directly is because I'm asked numerous times a day across dozens of videos. In the Top 10 video I also explain why I also *won't* answer this question in the comments section: because I don't know that artist's preferences. I don't believe in blindly telling some to spend their money on a particular brand, specifically as an influencer, because I don't want to take on that responsibility and then have someone get upset or disappointed with me when they don't like the same things I like. The Top 10 video explains the pros and cons each brand, why I'd recommend them to which people, and helps teach others what to look for, plus it's all in once place for easy reference! I hope that helps :)
I’d definitely like to know more about the (non-dinosaur) land and air reptiles and what the difference is.

Watching you blend all the bright colors together was fascinating. 😍
Omg I love it when you use gouache, it looks fantastic! I'm also glad that you decided to go for this color scheme :D
Aw thanks so much Mel! I'm glad you liked it! I can't hold a candle to Mary's work, but I do like to try :D

Thanks Grace!! 🦕💜🦖

I remember you saying you loved dinosaurs in another video, I'm glad you got to have some fun with it :)
Great video as always Denise! And yes now that you mentioned it, you need to tell us why the air and water animals aren't dinosaurs!
Thanks Zoe! I've pinned a comment with the response for the air/water thing :)
I LOVE the colors on the steggo! You’re making me want to indulge in gouache more
I thought you might like that one! And indeed, I love this Schmincke gouache so much! 😍
I'd like to know more about the dinosaurs and non dinosaurs! Sounds interesting!

So cool! Thanks Denise! I really enjoyed watching this and learned so much! 😊
Thanks Sarah! Loved your video, too!
The dinosaur turned out great! I hope the move if going well.

Are there any books about dinosaurs and non-dino reptiles that's reliable you'd suggest for research?
I love imagining other ways dinosaurs could look, seeing as we don't have a 100% certain idea. Like, let's get fluro T-Rexes!
Where do you get your paint supplies outside of amazon? For example the schminke gouche?
Jackson's! There's a link in the video description. They're based in the UK but ship elsewhere, and the prices are really good :)
What are you using when painting white details?
Usually white gouache or ink.

I should have said "non-dinosaur reptiles", but flying reptiles in that case :) Or swimming reptiles, or just reptiles.
flying reptiles are pterosaurs :)
