    I like the way the uses of ser and estar are presented in this video. It's much better than what the typical presentation is.

    One of the best videos that I have seen on these three verbs. For those of us who have been speaking Spanish for a number of years, we know from practice which verbs to use in certain situations. But when it comes time to explain why to a student, that's not so easy. This video will be of great help to me as a teacher! Thank you!

    I think that it would be overwhelming for some who didn't have a basic grasp on the differences...but this is great just to review and love the multiple examples and tenses used.

    I'm a long way yet from thinking about taking up Spanish seriously, but your lessons are just a pleasure to watch, Professor Jason :))
    I'd like to remark on the sound volume -- I believe it would have been better if you could perhaps make it a bit higher. It's nothing serious, but I think this video was a bit quiet.

    MY APOLOGIES!
    Dear Professor Jason, first, thank you so much for the absolutely EXCELLENT SPANISH LESSONS you have so very painstakingly and generously produced and uploaded on TH-cam! Unfortunately I must remove this video lesson - one of 10 videos in the series - from my playlist because the noisy introductory music wakes me from my sound slumber. Please note that I listen to your excellent series of intermediate- and advanced-level Spanish videos before falling asleep every night. Although I don't really believe in "sleep learning," I often leave the videos on whenever I go back to bed. Meanwhile, some of the other lessons that begin with much softer music do not disturb my sleep at all. Again, thank you so much for your extreme generosity.

    Thanks for another lesson. Unless I missed it, it would be great if you could also create a video for the various expressions with the verb tener. Many of them tend to fall under the "to be" category. There is a trivial typo in the last sentence on the haber slide (nao s/b no).
    Saludos, Jon

    well, with estar it seems that the imperfect is used more often, but the preterite forms (estuve, estuviste, estuvo, etc.) can be used if you are refering to something in the past as a completed action, e.g. Estuve enfermo la semana pasada.

    Hi Professor Jason. I was wondering if you have any lessons on past tense usages of estar and ser. I'm o.k. with the conjugations but I can't figure out when to use preterit vs imperfect, for example estuve/estaba or fui/era. I really love your lessons - every time I watch one, I can feel the cloud of confusion disappearing. Thanks!

    Tengo una pregunta sobre ser y estar, y espero que tu puedas ayudarme.

    Por qué es ESTADO en A y SIDO en B?

    I have been working on understanding "ser" and "estar" for a few weeks. When I encounter exercises of each I can answer correctly in the present tense if each is presented in an isolated category. However, when "ser" and "estar" exercises do not begin with a pronoun it takes me quite a while to decide which form to use. Is this normal? Do I just keep going and add new vocabulary to create new sentences? Not sure what to do next. Thanks for the help.

  • @hugstablebear
    @hugstablebear 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    A web site listed the following as one of the top 10 errors in learning Spanish:
    Use "ser" to tell where an event is taking place.
    Early in your studies, you probably learned that "estar" is always used to denote location. When it comes to events, this can be confusing. "Ser" is always used to tell where an event is taking place. "El perro está en la casa," but "La fiesta es en la casa."
    I'd never heard this before and you didn't mention it. Is that correct?

    Would you say that it is appropriate to think of the choice between "ser" (describing a permanent or inherent quality) & "estar" (describing a transitory or unusual quality like physical or emotional states) as only to be considered when "ser" or "estar" are used with "predicate adjectives"? -- Thinking of it this way really helps me focus this use in my mind. (That is, if it is a correct way of thinking about it) ...lol

  • @Professorjason
    @Professorjason  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    It depends... fueron might work if you made it clear you were referring to a specific block of time: fueron comunistas durante la segunda guerra mudial, use of the preterite emphasizes narration of a completed act vs. description of someone in the past

    Dear Professor Jason:
    I like your lessons. One quick question though, why are you not using the past tense of the verb estar? you go directly to the imperfect. Please reply. Thanks.

    • @legaleagle46
      @legaleagle46 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The use of the Preterit of estar is relatively rare in Spanish because of the nature of the verb. You would only use it if you wanted to indicate that the temporary state of being only lasted for a specific amount of time in the past (Estuve enfermo por tres horas ayer, pero después me puse mejor.)
      As you can see, by the way, estar is irregular in the Preterit: estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvisteis, estuvieron.

    Question
    On a fill-in ser vs estar worksheet I did for an advanced Spanish review class, here was the sentence-
    La película ___ aburrida.
    I put "es"
    The teacher said that either would work, because the essential character of the movie being boring would use "es" but if talking about, perhaps, a really wonderful movie but it's boring for the kids... La película está aburrida (para ellos).
    I feel like she's wrong... but I wondered if you would comment on this please?
    Is "La película está aburrida para ellos." a correct sentence?

    I have confusion on which verb (ser or estar) to use when describing how something was in the past. For example: How was your day? My day was good. How was your trip? My trip was excellent. How was the game? The game was great. Do you use ser or estar?

    • @Professorjason
      @Professorjason  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hannah Gautsche most of the time you'll hear SER in the preterite: Cómo fue...? Or: Cómo te fue...? Some people also use the preterite of ESTAR: Cómo estuvo...?

    Professor Jason, although most of your videos are excellent and I certainly consider you probably the best Spanish and Portuguese teach on TH-cam . . . I don't understand what made you add the EXTREMELY NOISY introductory "MUSIC" to some your Spanish tutorial videos in the series, including this one. I just can't use this video and the others with the JARRING, EAR-SPLITTING SO-CALLED MUSIC. I only use your quieter videos or the ones which you go directly to the lesson without any annoying racket at the outset!

      Basically the 1° case means that being a professor was a fact, and it ended as such. The 2° case means that your situation as professor was ended unexpectedly.

    Isn't this simpler to just say that "ser" is used for more permanent statements and "estar" for a temporary statements (with an exclusion of geographical location)? As in: whenever you're not sure which one to use, just think about how long the subject will stay (or stayed) in this particular state of being...?

    • @legaleagle46
      @legaleagle46 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is one important exception: "estar muerto". Death is considered pretty much permanent, but we use "estar" rather than "ser" for it, the reason being that "estar" actually signals a change in being or state of being; first one is alive, and then the state changes to being dead.

    I am having difficulty using the correct form of the verb and cant seem to find the conjugations for the specific sentences.
    For example, what form of ser do you use for nosotros, or Ustedes?
    Is it possible for you to do the complete list of Estar/Haber/Ser? Thanks

    Thank you for these great lessons! Do you have any lessons that explain the verb "Tratarse"? It has me very confused as I have seen it translated as if it were being used as "ser" or "estar". For example: "Se trata de una enfermedad que se comunica con facilidad." I saw translated as: "It's a disease that spreads easily." Is "tratarse" ever used like "ser" or "estar? Thanks again!

    • @Professorjason
      @Professorjason  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Tratarse conveys the idea of "to be about"... I can ask what is that book about... ¿De qué se trata ese libro? Or I can ask about a class: ¿De qué se trata esa clase? That's the general meaning, but it can be translated back into English simply as "is/are"...
