  • This is a short recording made of my all original 1959 Fender Tweed Champ 5F1. I am using my American Vintage Reissue '64 Telecaster with the amp. I recorded the amp with a USB dynamic mic from Samson (panned mostly left) and with the Sony A7III on-board mic (panned mostly right) for room sound. This amp is all original except it has been updated with a grounded three prong plug. I try the amp on 4 and then on 8. Please forgive my terrible guitar playing. I am thinking about selling this amp because I never have time to play anymore and I think it might be time to pass it on to someone who can really enjoy it.

      the re-issue champ , is a very nice amp , but doesn't hold try to the the 5f1 tho very close , the re-issue isn't quite hand made more like hand assembled using pre-made wiring loom and half printed board with push fit fittings ..
      If your after the tweed tone of yesteryear then I would recommend building a 5e3 tweed , some kits are so close to the original spec , with everything had wired and point to point soldering using period correct parts , and date specific capacitors and transistors .. all adds to something just a little nicer ..

    This would make for some awesomely raunchy garage band tones. Now all I need is to start a band and build a garage.

    I had a '59 Champ in high school in the 90's and a "friend" I jammed with stole it in 2001 when I left it at his house for a couple months. Sold it for peanuts, I heard. Also in great shape. Mom got it retubed and some replaced caps at an amp shop here in Colorado for Christmas for me. I got it for $10 from a friend who got it from an elderly neighbor who kept it in a closet. At what point is it rude to ask where the owner of every one I see got theirs? I'm 39 and it haunts me to this day. Haunts me.

    • @shizzaq
      @shizzaq  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear about that. Maybe you will find it again someday. This one had all original caps, not one single thing had ever been changed. It even had the old electrolytic caps which I know isn't good but the amp worked and sounded great. I was in high school in the 90's as well and rocked a Peavey Bandit until finally I saved up enough to get a Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket. That was as close as I could afford to get to the Metallica sound.

      I left a marshall jcm800 at my singers house in the early 90's. Within 2 months, he sold it to help pay his rent. I must of received no more than $250 back. Lesson learned, dont leave anything nice anywhere other than in your possession

    Sounding good! Pity they're hard to find and very expensive. I decided not to try and build a copy (I'm 73) and don't have a workshop anymore. So I bought a JOYO JTA-05 "Sweet Baby" Tube Guitar Amplifier - 5 Watt which is basically a clone. Same tubes and basic circuit only the cabinet is not tweed. It has a nice 8" Celestion speaker and a very solid cabinet. It only cost AU$220 delivered here in Australia. That makes it around US150. Good value and it sounds just right! Durn thing is loud - folks are amazed it's only 5W rms and it's got the 'vintage tube sound. :) (I used to build push pull 30W guitar amps with 12"speakers in my young days)

    • @WW-jz8zd
      @WW-jz8zd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the insight. I just got a Stageright 5W with 8" Celestion super 8. The circuit is pretty much the same as an early Champ. It probably sounds pretty similar to Sweetbaby, I am guessing.

    • @VintageSG
      @VintageSG 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the Joyo, there's a capacitor missing. Have a look at the circuit board and you'll see the space for it, conveniently marked out with the polarity too. A 25v electrolytic in there, somewhere between 5uF and 22uF will give a little more gain and grit. It's the bypass cap for V1a. Play with the values. Fender fitted it to their amps, but left it out on some schematics.
      Champs sound just fine without it. They tend to stay a little cleaner for longer without it. I built a Champ-a-like and tried with and without, and prefer without. You can get it back with a little clean boost anyway. If you modify it to closer to the 5f2a circuit, it's worth adding to help compensate for losses within the tone control.
      You could add a bypass to V1b too, but things tend to get flubby. Great for lo-fi though.
      You'll pry my Champ-a-like from my cold, dead hands.
      I tend to build sub 5W amps. I've built push-pull and single ended. All the tone, at home friendly volumes.

    great amp! thanks for posting!
    friendly suggestion: it's a small thing, because this sounds so good in stereo, but i noticed a slight lag in one channel timewise, and when i tried listening in mono, the channels summed together in a funky way. try it and see what i mean sometime. it's gotta be from the difference in physical distance from the source to each mic. people run into it in recording studios all the time. you're just getting cancellation in a bunch of frequencies. if you get very ambitious there are a couple easy fixes, in order of hassle: try flipping the phase on one channel if that's an option, L and R sound like they could be that far apart. better yet, apply a delay to the mic closest to the amp, about 1ms per foot difference between mics. or probably easiest if you have editing software, if you can mess with the audio tracks just zoom in to see where a sound starts and drag the early one back to match the other's starting point. hope that's useful for ya.

      So sorry it took me so long to reply. This amp had the original speaker. Just an 8 inch alnico speaker. I am guessing it was a Jensen. Thank you so much for the compliments. At level 4 it was fairly loud. Like a little louder than you could sing un-mic'ed. You could mic the amp and play a gig with it I think. I tried a newer weber speaker and to be honest with this amp that gritty champ tone is coming from the amp. I don't think it sounded much different with the weber speaker.
