I bought a small piece of M4 steel and made my own replacement blade for my broken M16-01KS. I ground it down to exact dimensions and it works well. I renamed it the “M16-M4”. I also upgraded the washers to bearings and it is much better opening.

I bought 3 brand new, the leek, a classic buck knife and a crkt thero and the kershaw is by far the best. Reminds me of the kershaw blur i had years ago

i was given a CRKT M16 with the tanto blade and i love it so much. i was looking around for a new edc and nothing came close to the usefulness and reliability that specific design gave me. other knives can be better for specific things, but i haven't used anything that has been as reliable and versatile.
i did remove the clip because i far prefer it without it. and opening it doesn't bother me, it feels better over time. i care most about the functionality and durability. and specifically the M16 with the tanto blade has far outperformed much more expensive knives i have used. it's basically been a multi tool for me.

No experience with the Leek, but I’ve EDC’d an M16-02Z (tanto combo blade) for the past 6 years. A few observations about my M16:
    1. I’ve had to put blue threadlocker on every fastener to keep them from backing out, and especially to keep the clip from wobbling.
    2. Held an edge well for the first 6 months or so, then requires a touch-up about every week (depending on use) to keep sharp.
    3. I’ve got a little surface rust on the outside of the liner where it’s exposed through the grip, but I’ve never seen rust on the blade. I only clean and oil the knife 2-3x per year. I think that’s pretty good. YMMV.
    4. The liner lock jams very frequently and has always done so. I remember reading that this is a common issue, but I don’t remember if it’s specific to the AutoLAWKS versions or if it applies to all of the smaller M16’s. It’s no longer a big deal to me, you just have to push a little harder on the liner lock to force it back open.
I carry it every day and it sees light to moderate use 5-6 days of the week. It’s been a great EDC for my needs. However, I’m finding that the blade serrations get in the way more often than they help. I’m looking at the Leek as my next EDC, so finding this comparison is great. :)

i had a i guess it was a 10kz for about as long. it was just a classic m16 with the tanto blade. and i never had any trouble with it. i only had to sharpen it a few times, and it held an edge really well for me. i did have to tighten it a few times but that was only after putting it through some very heavy beatings. i used it heavily everyday for a little over 5 years, and it was the most reliable and versatile knife i ever used. i actually got a lot of use out of the serrations for cutting certain rope stripping wire and various other things. it never jammed on me, but at some point i did disengage the lock.
i ended up losing it in an accident and after trying out some different knives some much more expensive ones too. i had to go back to this classic design and i got me what seems to be the exact same model in the M16-10KZ.
depending on what specifically you are using it for and how you are using it i can see other knives that can be more useful. for example fishing vs construction. for fishing it is ok, but i would prefer it for construction. for fishing i might prefer the leek, but for construction i prefer the m16. but for something like self defense the m16 is definitely the better choice out of the two.

I just picked up the frame lock version of the spear point M16. Haven't used it much yet (just opened it today) but agree with your findings. It takes a little bit of wrist to open but that being said the tolerances are quite good. Never had the Leek, but I think I would enjoy either.

The only crkt i had was the fossil. I've owned a few Kershaw's and my favorite so far is the Kershaw volt ss. The crkt flipped nice but was hard to retrieve from pocket. I dropped it once and the tip broke and it was a good chunk of steel too. So I believe the Kershaw's are made better for hard use. Thevcrkts look cooler but Kershaw is better for utility.

Great video-- I have (& use) both of these knives as EDC pieces, although for different purposes, and situations--
Even though I prefer Kershaw with its "speed assist," (have the all black, $50 leek), I gravitate to my M-16KS for daily work (this version doesn't have the stupid "auto lawks" button).
While good for "last ditch defense," the point on the Leek's blade tends to stab water bottles as I'm opening cases @ work, more so than the M-16's spear point--
Ironically enough, I find my $10 *Kershaw Hotwire,* with its "sheep's foot," cheap-metal blade (3cr), to be better at opening things than both the Leek & M-16...fwiw.
My daily EDC might be different, tho, if CRKT hadn't removed that stupid button from the KS version. That thing's annoying & unnecessary, at best, and slightly dangerous, at worst.
Lastly, I did find that the lock on my Kershaw Leek would engage by itself, at times, thus rendering it useless in a "quick defensive situation" (even after tightening the little screw). So, I glued it open-- problem solved.

I like the blade profile of the Leek. As most of the time I'd use a pocket knife for food prep, opening packages or other fine work, the Ken Onion design doesn't hide the cut, but instead allows me to better see what I'm doing (but only marginally better than the M16).

these two knives are the only ones I really carry. the thumb stub on the m16 is kind of annoying sometimes but I still prefer it slightly to the leek. My m16 also took weeks to break in and flip smooth. That break in period has kind of made me more attached to the knife to be honest.
