I have tried so many different brands of paper! I purchased 22 x 30 sheets of the Legion watercolor paper and others too! I was surprised at how many different shades of black paper there are! I have been using my darker papers with soft pastels and if I need more tooth I put down a clear gesso from Liquitex! I have a gallon of budget clear gesso and I mix in pumice to get that tooth on any surface that needs it! Beautiful paints from JuliaK ! Please be sure to tell her she is appreciated by us cavers! Almost as much as you Gem!!!
Love the cave painting! Love that mushroom by the entrance! I tend to think of black watercolor paper as gimmicky because watercolor for me has been about soft shades but with all the glittery paints out there, I guess it's becoming a much more interesting choice! I do always enjoy your comparison videos.
Thanks for a great demo. I love black paper and don't have any of the watercolour variety so I've just ordered an A4 pad of the Frisk from the stash shop!

Stunning painting! I too really hate textured watercolor paper. I don’t own any opaque enough paints to use black paper, but this has made me want to get some.😂
Great video, Gem! The sea white brushes i bought from the stash shop really surprised me in a good way & im glad i purchased them, i haven't had a chance yet to use my julia paints as yet.
Fascinating tests. Don't forget Stonehenge do a black watercolour paper as well. I've a tiny test book of it. Also, I think the wash looked worse on the the Van Gogh because of the paper being a dark green-black, which worked as kind of camouflage. I have some stripy paper (can't remember the brand off the top of my head), but it's cotton and I'm poor, so I'm going to finish it 😂 It's a pain in the bottom.
I actually have some of the Claire Fontaine paper, which I completely forgot about! I wasn't aware of the Stonehenge paper... looks like we need a follow-up video!

Other Black Papers: Seawhite; Winsor and Newton black mixed media paper; & Fabriano black card, cellulose, 300gsm. I hate myself for doing this, especially since you have my address 😉😅

That weird texture really annoyed me 😂and I wasn't even painting on it, I was just watching lol The painting is great, I love the colors :) Also, I'm itching now to splash Julia's sparkly paints onto black paper and just watch them be gloriously shiny 😂

Frisk has really good quality papers. I like my Frisk pads I got in ScrawlrBoxes 😊

Clairefontaine does painton, which i believe can also be used for watercolour.
