    Anyone notice he's stacking triads around the major and minor circle of fifths?

    • @mindcontrol67
      @mindcontrol67 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes he's playing all the diatonic arpeggios of the scale.Thing is you can play one 7 note modal arpeggio and cover everything.

      Valley Arts with EMG's mostly likely into his Dumble. He has (had?) a Valley Arts Sig model, but that's not the one he's playing here.

    So what is benefit of this kind of playing? What does it offer you that other approaches don't? Is it the fact that you can take more complicated chords with extensions and think of them as simpler triads instead?

    • @jimparker880
      @jimparker880 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The benefit is that, as triads (I.e., legit chords), the licks are coherent, but as natural extensions of the underlying harmony (the rhythm part) the solo sounds impossibly sweet. We used to call these upper structure triads. This is a fundamental element of the Larry Carlton trick. Of course, he is wonderful on ten different levels, at least.

      It allows you to paint using more colors on your aural palette. Think of the notes as a series of overlays. At the bottom is the root note. On top of that you can lay the 2 other notes of the triad. On top of that you can lay notes that harmonize with the triad (this video). And on top of that you can lay the 'outside notes', i.e. notes not of the scale or mode, used sparingly to create tension.

      If this video is from 1988, when many of these Reh or Hot Licks videos came out then he was about 40. This must be before he was shot in the neck and couldn't play for quite some time.
