What is Back EMF in DC Motors? - Another Teaching Moment | Digi-Key Electronics

Applying power to a DC motor makes it rotate to do work but there’s much more going on inside the motor such as Back EMF. Back EMF generated by the motor’s rotating armature opposes the supply voltage. The faster the motor spins, the more back EMF is produced. Therefore, back EMF is calculated into motor design and efficiency. This video explains in greater detail how Back EMF effects DC motor supply power and varies depending upon applied loads.

Your motor at 1:18 is going precisely backards, the current that matters is that in the short arm of the 'coil' that goes across the magnetic field.
