    being good at defence is not every part of the game, the Aussie centres bettered ours in the 1st and 2nd tests, and we will have to agree to disagree. But I stand firm to my original point BOD is not the best rugby player of all time. Great yes but not the greatest and ty for the discussion with not reverting to personal insults as some of the muppets on here do, you are a gentleman. I look forward to next years 6N, best wishes.

    How can a guy with 100% tackle success be bettered by his counterparts? I honestly don't know what you are talking about. Frankly you said he was bettered and you site the lions as an example! When The likes of Dan Carter said he was the best player in the lions and couldn't understand why he was dropped. I know WG dropped him because he wanted the 2 centers to be familiar with each other. fair enough. But bettered??? Forget it Richard. You have your opinion. you're entitled to it. Good luck.

    C'Mon Richard, thats pretty weak. 15 years and the lions is your example? You said he was bettered. He was not bettered by anyone in the Lions. He lost his place due to Gatland wanting to play an established center pair. O'Driscoll made 27 out of 27 tackles in the first 2 tests. And the backline not firing was down to epic OZ defence and poor game plane with a very slow Scrum half. And for that matter there are more players in the back line to point a finger at. and you question my knowledge?

    Willie John has stated he would poo his pants if he faced PO'C on a pitch. haha
    But i take your point that the players would adapt to the generation they are in so with that said i agree we can't judge them on when they played.
    So the only true measure that is cross generational
    O'Driscoll and no other outside center in the history of the game comes close to what O'Driscoll has achieved. Now kindly provide an example of any game when he has been bettered? Or agree to disagree but no BS! tnx!!

    Continued.
    As for generations. The level of professionalism, training, conditioning, physio therapy, nutrition etc etc Buts even the most average modern player streets ahead of the older amateur players. Who had a neck full of beer and 20 cigarettes before and after a game. No doubt they were hard men. Hard as they come. But thats a question of mental toughness. Physically they were tiny compared to now. No player from 20 years ago could stand in front of the likes of North and not get injured.

    Best 13 ever. No one touche him in any generation thus far. Highest scoring center ever in the world. 6n's try scoring record. Named in every pundits world 15 consistently for the past 10 years.
    I totally agree we can't quantify a best ever player. but we can certainly narrow the field by going on position. There is no one who has ever come close to O'Driscoll. Stats bare this out. But more importantly watching him in action is undeniable. And don't worry mate. Cont...

    Ye the game constantly changes. But here is a fact. BO'D could play in any generation. Zap him back 20, 30 , 40 years and he would still be the best 13 playing. But Ray Gravell et all could no way set foot on a modern professional rugby pitch. They would be carted off on a stretcher inside 2 mins. The demands of the modern game are such that the old time players would never come close to what we see now. BO'D has played in both the amature days and Pro days now. And he was the best during both

    You know aswell as I do he didn't attack in the first 2 tests he was, as well as other players outplayed (or bettered ) by their Aussie counterparts. Only did the lions outplay the Aussies in virtually every position in the field. I feel like a right git saying this about BOD because he is one of the best players I have seen play but as i repeat not the best.

  • @richardplatt4245
    @richardplatt4245 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Players play to what is needed to the game at the time and to say that no older generation player could play in the modern game is rubbish. Quite the opposite where it comes to them getting carted off in 2 mins. Take some time out to look back at some of older decades of rugby you'll be surprised on how hard the men and game was. BOD is a great player but not the best.

    just look at the Lions tour for starters, he didn't have the best of tours. In defence he was great as always but in attack he'd lost his sharpness in attack, yes he scored 3 tries but they were against western force and Combined Country XV not the strongest of the tour opponents.

  • @richardplatt4245
    @richardplatt4245 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    do you actually know anything about rugby or just know about stats. Take off the BOD blinkers and take a look at centres, he is 1 of the best but not the best. I've seen games were BOD has been superb but also watched him when he's been bettered.

  • @richardplatt4245
    @richardplatt4245 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes I question that, Ray Gravell R.I.P. great player and a true Welsh legend. BOD is a great player but to say the best of all time, yes of the last decade but year in year out rugby keeps evolving and player requirements change.

  • @richardplatt4245
    @richardplatt4245 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    to mention 1 JPR Williams and as to say physically just look at Willie John McBride even today. So still you miss the point entirely, BOD in his early amateur years wouldn't cope with todays complete training and mentality.

    the greatest player of all time can't be quantified. but certainly he is the best 13 of all time. no question about that.

    You'd have to be an idiot to think BOD is the greatest player of all time, but I agree he should be playing.
