I have a quick question and hope you can help me. on the same engine I had P0017-85 and P0018-85, timing ist done on the vehicle and all magnets, sensors and adjuster are replaced, but unfortunately still getting the same codes. The only symptoms on the vehicle is long at the start otherwise the engine runs fine. Do u think the timing was incorrect or could be related to another problem ?
Hello when you replaced the cam do you have to replace the valve lifter and roller rocker arms? I am trying to install a used cam from another m278 due to my reluctor wheel being not aligned with the camshaft anymore. Could I get away just using another used camshaft or do I have to install new set of valve lifters and roller rockers? Not sure if required on this engine does not specify in wis. Thanks

I cant imagine the cost of this situation. hopefully it doesn't have high mileage because these also wear out the cylinder linings. I have found big gouges in these enignes usually on 6-8 which causes a loss in compression. Would suck to do all this work then the short block fails eventually. The theory is that a lot of the wear on these comes from the variable oil pump pressure control. they run extremely low pressure at cruising speeds and at idle. I have eliminated that issue on my personal vehicle by running an external valve plugged in to the harness to keep the check engine light off. when the valve is unplugged you get normal oil pressure at idle and cruising speeds in default position, which should help with timing component wear and cylinder wear.
We check with Mercedes and the repair is not covered under extended warranty. But it’s not a bad idea to always check and see if this kind of repair will be covered my manufacture.

I'm afraid The timing might be slightly off. A long crank is one symptom of off-timing.

FYI this reapair has an extended warranty through Mercedes!!!
We check with Mercedes and the repair is not covered under extended warranty.
But it’s not a bad idea to always check and see if this kind of repair will be covered my manufacture.
