Some notes in case anyone's curious :
0.26 : "The EN achievement's called 'Metamorphosis', why'd I TL it as Grub Savior?" A couple of reasons. The JP localization of the achievement directly translates to "Grub Savior" or "Savior of the Caterpillars" and doesn't have the direct foreshadowing the original EN name gives. This makes sense of why FBK reacted the way she did later on when she discovers what happened, which is with shock and confusion instead of making the connection from the EN achievement title.
1.07 : "She said Let's-ra-goichirou. Why did you put let's a go-go?" It's a conscious decision. The original line, from what I understand, is a reference to a pretty old manga called "レッツラゴン" (Let's Ra Gon). I felt that it was honestly hard to explain it without some really long note and even then, it'd be hard to make sense of it, so I went with "Let's a go-go" instead. Coincidentally (or perhaps not), it also coincides slightly with a Wham! song (titled Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go but that's stretching it).

As someone who hasn't played Hollow Knight I thank you for your service. I think the way you chose to translate it added to the impact of the big reveal. The second translation too was a good choice, it was the spirit of what she was saying that mattered not the words she used to express it. I honestly appreciate the effort you put in, translating stuff like that is harder than most people think, I almost always end up unintentionally transliterating instead of localising.
I see where you are coming from, and it makes sense. But it also makes me extremely glad I took the time to learn Japanese so I can understand 95%+ of everything they are saying without having to rely on translation/localization. It's unreal how much is lost/changed if you can't understand the language and have to rely on someone else to translate it for you.
The "Let's a go-go" part is actually something fubuki learned from a TRPG session not long ago :

I like how Ina took a moment to grasp the situation before doing anything, while Fubuki attacked the Grubfather the very moment she saw that he supposedly ate all his children.
The ancient ones and their followers have seen much of the cosmos and operate in strange ways. The kami, on the other hand, would be rightfully offended by something which at first appears to be an affront to nature, rather than party to it.
It’s cause the TL for the achievement is not at all what the achievement in english is supposed to imply. JP it’s Grub Savior in EN it’s Metamorphosis

I mean what’s actually going on right now is that the larva father is using himself as a sort of pseudo cocoon so his children can evolve, after they’ve changed, they’ll burst out of him and feed on him. The parent actually just sacrificed themselves.

I wish I could understand Japanese at a level high enough to watch her entire playthrough. Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games and it seems Fubuki enjoys it so much.
Most of the playthrough is live translated by Des P. which allowed me to watch and really enjoy the whole thing.
I'm using LiveTL browser addon, to filter the translations and have them shown as captions.
The quality of the subs is amazing, especially since it's live and incredibly fast. I'm very thankful for Des P.'s hard work!

This is probably the angriest/most upset I've seen FBK get at a game. Not sadness or even frustration, like she was having a difficult time or anything, it was just anger. From 6:36 to 7:16 is a LONG silence with nothing but her thrashing the grubfather, then she dream nails him and that just makes it worse. Fubuki, the fox who entertained people off-the-cuff for 4 hours while two of her kouhai slept, was at a complete loss for words.
An elegy tends to be a poem for the dead,I think the elegy is for the grub father, the white king and all those who died in the games lore
You could also interpret it as being an elegy for that stage of the grubs' life-cycle, as I'm assuming Grubberfly probably isn't the name of the species, but rather their juvenile, grub state, maybe. Lots of room for all kinds of interpretations on this questline.
I think we are all being too optimistic about the result. It's an 'elegy'. And the 'gratitude' of the grubs is the power to cut white-hot slashes of angry power.
I'm telling you... Grubs are gonna die. I expect them to eat each other until a few or just one is strong enough to break the near-indestructible skin of the grub father.

7:17 reaching the conclusion that her attacks doesn't work, she tries to calm down and make sense of the current situation, as expected
7:23 she tried calming down but the sound of the grubfather's laugh irritated her so much she attack once more, this time with the dream nail (you can hear her first sigh/forced exhale)
7:28 I'd rage too if my attacks got replied with happy/楽しい, but not to fubuki's extent as she read it with exhales and bottled rage (don't tell me you couldn't feel that, i was shaking as if I was there)
7:42 to 7:45 fubuki bottles up all the irrational emotions swirling in her and calms down slightly
7:48 I can't quite explain it, but y'know how people would laugh some things off as a joke when they couldn't grasp the situation at hand? That's what she's doing "haha this ain't right, right chat? This is prolly a dream, right?!" And it proceeds to become pure rage if handled poorly

This "Twist" is heavily foreshadowed when you fight the fly boss, after you defeat him a lot of small flies burt out of him, meaning insect on this world can go into a group metamorfosis that way.
Grub father here being and absolute chat paying the knight to bring back his children so he can die and give a new life to his children.
Wait, it's actually true? I thought it's one of those times when chat tries to soften the blow. Never played HK, so I honestly don't know.

@@bastion8804 There's hardly any definitive evidence in HK for certain stuffs. We can only draw conclusions implied by reasons that might support them.
But in this case, the reasons seem likely. The achievement you get in the English version for this quest is called Metamorphosis, referring to the Grub themselves. The Grubberfly Elegy's charm description refers to the Grubs moving to the next stage of their lives. There was a boss called the Gruz Mother who seemed to went through this same process after we killed her. The Gruz Mother acted as a cocoon for her offsprings until she died and bursted open.
So the agreed upon theory is that yes, Grubfather was going through a natural cycle of life for the Grubs to evolve.

That silent rage when she just tried killing the Grubfather was pretty great.
So... that whole "raising inside their body" thing is something bugs only really do with eggs. Both because even thousands of eggs are smaller than the bugs themselves and because they already contain all the nutrients needed to grow as is inside the egg.
Metamorphosis is something else. Bugs readying to go through metamorphosis prepare for it by absolutely gorging themselves in order to have all the nutrients stored up to survive the process.
To begin with 1 grub father wouldn't have the nutrients in his body to support around a hundred grub's metamorphosis, while about 100 grubs WOULD provide enough nutrients to fuel _his._ Never mind that he can't physically fit them all in the dimensions of even his engorged body after eating them without them being...made smaller lets say.
Also bugs going through metamorphosis in a cocoon do so by pretty much literally melting themselves into a sort of soup and reforming inside the cocoon as their adult form. Subsequently, they'd never ever *share* a 'cocoon' to metamorphose like people seem to think the Grubfather is sacrificing himself to be. At the absolute best the result would be one singular butterfly/moth gestalt entity of all the grubs together.
...or the more likely possibility, especially considering the game's general tone, is that the Grubfather just ate them and *HE'S* the one who's gonna metamorphose, not his kids. Which is presumably what the collector was trying to protect them from by keeping them away from him. And why the charm is called an elegy, a lament for the dead. It wouldn't be called that if they weren't...well...dead.
I believe the grub father eats them to protect them while they do their metamorphosis. That's why you're allowed to slash him, to show you that any attacks just bounce off his elastic body.
I mean, fair. But all of this is based off the assumption that the insects in Hollow Knight work exactly the same as insects in real life. Which I think we can agree that they do not. We also can hear the grubs still inside of the father, which wouldn't be possible if they were all... you know. Dead.
There's also the possibility that he's done it to keep them safe from The Light just in case the little one fails in its task. The wrinkles of his face suggest a decent age, so its likely he knew the Kingdom before the Light started possessing its inhabitants and driving them mad, and wanted his children back to make _sure_ they would all be safe.
The fact that they're all still cheering away inside his belly, and that the Kingdom had made strides in the process of wielding Soul Energy in many manners (and going off of what the Elegy charm allows one to do), leads me to believe that they're all going to fuse into one being, possibly strong enough to resist The Light.
Pretty sure team cherry confirmed that the father ate them to protect them while they undergo metamorphosis.
So can we like consider the Grubfather's dialogue to be him on some sort of final high he's experiencing all the while suffering unimaginable pain on the inside?

I was gifted Hollow Knight years ago and never played it. FBK made me try it and it's such an amazing game. The game is so depressing, sometimes gross, creepy, and I love it.

I really really wish I could've known Fubuki when she was first playing this. One of my favorite games of all time, and she just brightens up everything. Good combo.

It is always the main character that ruins what another wants to prevent. it is all too common for me to see this but yet it amazes me. how the mc does things without much of any consequence. The collector did want to "protect" from what I read when I dream nailed him in is almost dead state. but I never finished the grub questline so this makes a lot more sense but also raises more questions for me on the relationship between the old grub and the collector.. I am going to enjoy this-.

To be fair if he really had eaten them he would've done so one by one as you recovered them, and you can still hear them alive, plus they're the same species so they could've eaten him as well if that really was whats going on.
So yeah, more than just likely thats just some sort of cocoon, which does mean the old grub sacrificed itself, but thats no different from real life nature, like spiders where the male gets eaten by the female after reproduction, and the female gets eaten by the babies when they are born, this grub will just become a cocoon for its childrens to grow.

I never considered that the collector was trying to prevent the metamorphesis. If it was not to hurt the grubfather, even though the emotional pain was worse, that's kind of sweet, in a way.

Just a reminder that most of the enemies in the game are citizens of hallownest that have been corrupted by the radiance, your killing innocent people. And that ain’t even one of the darkest things. This ain’t a happy game.
I was gonna say "pov: grub father is the scumlord sengoku & Fubuki is Kiryu but is able to do judgement cut", however, upon learing from the comments that it's quite the opposite on who does the eating...I retract my statement.
Also, I'm still shocked that there are bug babies that eat there parents, their mother mainly, like that red beetle or what insect it was on one of David Attenborough's documentaries. Like I know bugs in general don't really have emotions but that's still creepy.
