How To Plant Grape Vines at Home in the Back Yard.

- 📑Additional info below 📑 How do I plant a grapevine in my back yard? Includes a quick look at progress 4 months later in my backyard garden.
Flame Seedless and Crimson Seedless are the 2 red grape varieties I plant here at home.
You will see the soil, compost and fertilizer I use and the same method can be for bare rooted grapes or potted grapes.
* The grape vines are guided along wire that I have set at 3 levels between 2 metal posts .
* Each vine is planted 10 feet apart.
* The wire runs almost North/South so the vines get sun all day, as it rises and passes overhead and sets.
* Pick off any fruit that forms on the potted plant and any fruit in the first year, so energy goes into growing the vine itself.
* Select a single leading vine and have that grow like the big one shown.
* Remove side branches below your first level of wire where you want fruit to grow.

I've never had success with grapes. I did know they don't like their feet wet, we can be really wet, zero sandiness soil. Thanks for solving my mystery!

Just checking in. Lots of grape vines here - I have made net bags to cover the grapes from the birds - easy to pick too without loosing any as I keep the bags on them when cutting.

Hi Daz, Good to see you. Thank you for sharing this. We have an abundance of grapes for us here, if they survive the insects or bad weather. I can’t remember what brands we have (I think Concord). Grapes are wonderful to have. I’ve cut them all completely back several times, but they always grow back in abundance. They like our Sandy soil here. I enjoyed this. Thank you!

I have very clayey soil! I have to add organic matter to lighten it up. My grapes haven’t done very well. They are coming into three years being planted and are very slow growing. It is probably a combination of being ignored for two years as I was waiting for hip surgery, poor soil, and mostly neglect, neglect, neglect. Hopefully I am able to catch up on all the gardening chores this year!

Hey Daz! Super great video, I am going to get Glen to watch again with me. We had a grape alive for years that we had to transplant and it was okay for a while but then it died after a really harsh winter.

Enjoyed your video. I was brought up with grapes both at my Parent’s house and my Aunt’s house. I always enjoyed the shade they provided as we sat out in the yard in the summer. My Dad used to make wine with the Concord Grapes he had. My favorite story is that he would use recycled large glass wine bottles to make the wine and place a balloon on the top. One time during the fermenting process, one of the glass wine bottles exploded and there was wine and glass everywhere. Needless to say, Mom was not too happy.

I planted a some sort of grape plant last year and it grew maybe 6 inches at best,, yours is growing like a weed .. Thanks for sharing that with us..

I noticed that you didn't plant your grape vine next to a post and then and then put more post along your wires to give it more support. I was shown to plant post into the ground every 10 to 15 feet apart . And then plant the vine at the middle post and then let the vine grow both ways. If you have lots of grapes it won't pull (sag) the wires down. Thanks for your video . I did both , like and subscribed to your channel. Sorry it took so long , it takes awhile to get down under.

Hey Daz…I can’t believe how big that one grape vine grew that was trained. It’s huge! Seedless grapes are nice. Have you tried freezing them for snacks? Yum. I've tried growing grapes with no success. Then, after much research, I find that grapes are one of the plants that won't grow in the desert. Live and learn.

Hah, hah... I was patient for once and potted them after I bought them bare rooted. So glad I did it that was now, as I don't think they would have survived the frosts I had.

Thanks for sharing. I have two rows of fruit trees and the distance between these rows is about 6-7 feet. I wonder if I can plant grape vines between these two rows.

Oh, that's an interesting question. I'm not sure how the grapes roots would go with the trees either side at that distance and how the foliage would go with sunlight between the fruit trees.
Something to consider.

I have new roots I bought in March.. everything said to plant in May.. my last frost week is last week in April here in Colorado.. I put them in pots w mushroom compost to grow in the meantime.. they're doing great.. when I plant do I put them in the ground to within say 2" of the bottom leaves ?? My gut says yes.. what say you??

It's a little hard to give a perfect answer without see the actual plant itself.
Just make sure the root system is buried and a good 1-2 inches above that too.
Make sure the roots sit higher in the hole, for excess moisture to drain underneath.
Definitely keep those leaves above the ground and clear of the soil to prevent possible disease issues.

I've not grown Shiraz plants, but I cannot see why not. Just check with other videos, but I really cannot think of why there would be a problem.
I just harvested some grapes now and eating them while commenting. Such good timing.

Hey Dax! Question. I just bought a grape plant that is 3 times bigger than yours. I live in Utah 80 degrees right now, but in about a month cold will hit us and then snow in December, so idk if I should plant it in my back yard. If your answer is “don’t do it” what should I do then? Can I keep it indoors? Thanks in advance

I do not have any experience with snow here in Australia, but I would assume that it is best to wait.
The plant should be fine in a container that is watered occasionally and the plant will actually go dormant in the cold of Winter.
It should be fine until the real low temps arrive and then I would keep it next to a window for the light to shine on the foliage. Then as Winter sets in, the leaves should all be gone and in the warmth and light of Spring, the little buds should send out new growth.
I'd put it in the ground after I was confident the ground is not going to freeze again.
I hope this all makes sense and I am sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer, but we just never see snow here.

When did you plant it or whats the best season to plant grape vines?
G'day!
Aim for very late Winter or the start of Spring, as the plant will be ready to start waking up and growing during the Spring and Summer.
If your Winter is extremely cold, hold off to the start of Spring when the young plant will have slightly warmer conditions.

I planted grape vines last year and the growth was pretty outstanding. But at late summer/beginning of autumn they began turning brownish and some were splotchy. I thought it might be fungus. By winter they obviously looked dead, but I left them just to see what happened in spring. I checked them today and I’m starting to see new buds and leaves. If they did have fungus, would they be growing now or would they have died last year or over winter? Should I be worried or should I just dig them up and get rid of them? At this point I’m wondering if maybe it was just going dormant and as a new grower I was wrong. Any advice you have would be much appreciated. Really don’t want to lose the plane unless necessary, especially since they are going on their second year.

To me, it sounds like they are going through their normal growth cycle and are looking as they should be.
It is now autumn here in Australia and I expect these ones to go dormant in the coming months.
As for the fungus, I am not 100% sure to be honest. I am not an expert at all and it is hard without seeing the exact markings.
There are definitely a number of things such as the weather, disease, fungus etc and I would ask at a good local nursery and describe the markings.
They could possibly know and help with a good organic treatment, if there is an issue to worry about.

What kind of mulch do you use?

I use sugar cane mulch. It breaks down nicely over time and sits really well when it is soaked.
I'm not sure of your location, but if you are in Australia, you can buy it from stores such as Bunnings and it's a great way for the sugar cane farmers to make some kore money.

My grape's plants are now 1 year old and growing only in length. Should i cut them or not especially in spring of March April.? Or tell me in which year or grapes i should prune or cut their lengthy vines so the plant could only focus on producing fruiting rather then growing in length.?? Please help and i am from South Asia

I let my grape vines grow in length in year 1.
Then in year 2, I pruned them along the wire in a T shape.
It is best to prune the grapes in Winter as the vine is dormant and resting. The vines will wake up and grow well in Spring and Summer.
The grapes will only grow in the new growth that grows in Spring and Summer, so when pruning, look for buds that will shoot out and grow into fruiting vines for you.

Anything you notice from letting them go wild?

I'm not sure if I misunderstood you, but I don't let them go wild. I prune them deliberately as the fruit only grows on new growth.
I prune to encourage the new growth and also I prune to make sure new growth comes from where I have left buds on the old cane.
I have no experience with them being left to go wild, but I would assume that there would still be new growth from buds on an un-pruned grapevine. They would just grow and tangle with the old dead canes and it would eventually be a big mess of old and new growth that gets bigger and bigger every Spring/Summer.

What is the best time of the year to plant

Mid to late Winter and the start of Spring are good times as the plant will be dormant and it can slowly wake up and come to life in Spring and Summer and really start to grow.
I believe had these stored in a greenhouse and they woke up early and set leaves very quickly, so this is why they look so green and full of life when planting in the video.

@@KorrieJade , this is my second year with them producing fruit. Last year was poor, but they are young vines. This year looks better and I pruned them in Winter (about 3 months ago).
