I imagine Nico feels _he_ could've been the 7 time world champion, breaking records, gaining legendary status, and to see his childhood friend do that, while beating him head-to-head to get there-it's gotta be tough mentally. I'll be amazed if they are ever that close again, even after some 40 or 50 years. Congrats to him on at least squeezing one championship out of it, and of course all credit to Lewis for actually setting all those records.

I guess after 16 that fire was gone and he knew that he couldn't battle like that any longer and would just be a clear number 2 behind Lewis. He did the right thing. I really admire them both.

Yes the most consistent driver on the block is the least mentally stable. All drivers had rivals but lewis had to face his best friend. That fucks with you. He's come out of it much much stronger though, least amount of mistakes and errors after what happened with Nico. If you think he's mentally weak, then by your very point he should have been a footnote in F1 history post the mclaren period but nope
