Amen. A lot of people remember him from the later part of REO's career when he was basically a bloated shell of himself. But back in the day, especially in the 70s, there were very few American guitarists who could touch Gary Richrath. Very few.

Yes, this song is awesome live. I was at a concert in Raleigh NC that the local radio station recorded and played on their special live recordings program on the weekend. I captured that audio and it is the mp3 I always listen to. I met them backstage after a concert they did with my favorite band, Styx - cool guys.

My older brother used to play this in his band when I was a little kid. It was all I had really heard of REO when Hi Infidelity came out, and I thought: man they got soft. haha! PS even in my brother's band they would do the siren at the beginning on a synthesizer and I've always thought that was the coolest.

I saw REO live when they recorded "You Get What You Play For" at St Louis (I'm on side 4!)...After I joined the Air Force, I was with my folks at the airport after visiting for Christmas...a group of guys walked by, and I recognized Gary Richrath! The band had just put Kevin on a plane to Chicago. I called out, "Hey Gary!" He turned around, I waved my guitar case, and he smiled and gave me a thumbs-up. What a cool bunch, and a great band!

REO has released two songs from "Ridin' The Storm Out" that Kevin had originally recorded. "Cronin's original version of "Son of a Poor Man" is featured on the compilation albums "A Decade of Rock and Roll: 1970-1980", and "The Essential REO Speedwagon". "Son of a Poor Man" and "Ridin' the Storm Out" were featured on the live album "You Get What YOu Play For". The studio version of "Ridin' the Storm Out" with Cronin on vocals was released on the compilation "Box Set Series" in 2014, "The Early Years 1971-1977" boxed set in 2018 and as a downloadable track in the music video game Rock Band"

Give you a little inside info...as a musician my whole life, most bands seek that perfect show. So playing the same songs over and over is an absolute joy striving for perfection. Some of these bands are lucky because they wrote songs that are fun to play. A true musician never tiers of playing. It's what we live for...

  • @Katsem

That was a great song live, as you can tell. I was standing in front of the stage (in Omaha), in front of Gary. Fun at the end when the explosion happens. They are known for their ballads, but rock hard. Do Back on the Road Next, same concert. It really rocks.

This was taken from their "Live Infidelity" concert in Denver, Colorado in 1981 that was sold on video tape. From the same show, you need to listen to "157 Riverside Avenue." It was inspired by the house they stayed at in Westport, Connecticut when they recorded their first album in 1971. The studio version is cool, but the live version is faster, harder, and just kickin'.

I think Kevin Cronin is a better vocalist, but Mike Murphy does a great job during his brief stint. If you want to listen to another piece of REO history - on their 8th album, "Nine Lives", the band returned to their rock & roll roots, after a Top 40 "break". The closing track of that band is "Back on the Road Again", lead vocals from bassist Bruce Hall - a solid banger from the band. I fondly remember my year living in Louisville - I started listening to your reactions after I saw your page name. I lived out on Mallard Way, worked at The Seelbach downtown. Great city. Keep up the good work.

The studio version is good. I would definitely recommend reacting to it, if for no other reason than to hear what the band sounded like with 3rd singer Mike Murphy, who had good vocals, just not distinctive like those of Kevin Cronin.
Overall, I do prefer the live version sung by Kevin Cronin, but every once in a while I do go back to the studio original. I mean, you can't really go wrong with it, but once you listen to it for the first time, you realize why they didn't quite make it with Murphy and that they had to (eventually) bring-back Cronin. (The wild thing is that even when they did bring back Kevin, they STILL flopped at first. This was a band that deserved every bit of their success, because none of it came easy. None of it.)

First time watching you guys. If you want the best anti-war song of the century check out "War" by Edwin Starr. Seems with the Russia/Ukraine war going on and America will be in WW3 in 6 months a timely review is warranted. "War" was sung by all college age men during and after the Vietnam war when 350 dead 18 year olds being killed per week. None of this 2-3 dead every month or two like in Iraq. After you hear this song you will never be the same. You have been warned...the beat stays with you for life.
