You can still hear & see the pain in her voice/eyes when she talks about how they were robbed of their rights of “Dreamgirls”. I wish they had sued the estate of Michael Bennett for what they were owed like the cast of “A Chorus Line” did. It’s shameful how shady show business is. 💔

and what I was wondering when I first heard it, is whether the 'higher ups' on the production end of the play, KNEW how successful it was going to be, and subsequent to the earliest reviews (which were off the charts-good) went runnin' to get the entire cast to sign off on their shares, so that the people of "caucasian persuasion" could get their money, and some mo' 's**t, on top of it. People forget sometimes, "Dreamgirls" was the very first all-black cast, to knock Broadway on its ass, where money was concerned.

you know what's maddening and fascinating at the same time, is how her and Jennifer and Loretta and some of the other cast were eliminated from being a part of the movie...but if you look at other iconic actors or performers, like a Robert DeNiro or Joe Pesci or Lorraine Bracco or James Gandolfini (RIP) OR any number of Italian mob-type actors that we remember seeing on The Sopranos or all sorts of mob flicks, for example..those folks, damn near get re-cycled on knock-offs that made them very famous and pretty damn wealthy, ALL THE TIME. So to say that Sheryl and her co-workers on 'Dreamgirls" did not get their due..is a very literal statement. NONE OF THEM, got their due..and all of them have been historically ignored.
I am not exaggerating or lying when I say, I know white folks who dont even know that Jennifer Holliday was in Dreamgirls...and they are in my age group. And the reason, I mention how ignorant they are about her body of work, lies at the feet of there being no significant media outlets or resources, that FORCE them to know her history...and thats because so much of our history, in ANY ERA in history, gets brushed aside.

They had a Divine in there for a cameo they should have had all the original cast members part of that movie in some shape form of fashion

Not sure this is 100% accurate. At the time, this was typical procedure for "workshops" of new shows. Michael Bennett gave a (very small) percentage to "A Chorus Line" workshop participants...a pittance in relation to what was actually earned by that show...and he was insuring that these performers did not have recourse for their contributions. It was common practice. Years later, the cast of "HAMILTON" had a similar experience and they won a percentage by banding together. Things have not changed much in 40 years.

That is so sadly poetic how even the damn Broadway Show version of the Supremes has as part of that legacy the contract RIP-OFF of someone other than the performers getting compensated for something great!
It's basically how Motown and most of the music industry runs!
It was done to The Supremes and it was done to the Dreams of the original "Dream girls"
In the case of Dream girls it sounds like a set up though!
Motown was over a period of time ....Dream girls it sounds like someone was PURPOSELY sent to the cast while they are getting ready to go on ...not a time or place for that kind of business decision!
Sheryl makes me laugh though she will let you KNOW the sh*t that goes on but she will put on her best face as she tells you and it makes her very relatable tho you may laugh B uz oh no one of Sheryl's lessons learned is coming LOL she smiling but what she saying make you wanna go bop somebody upside their head LOL (PS NOT Sheryl that is)

Sheryl Lee Ralph, one never signs anything under pressure that's a sure sign you're being taken for a ride. At 22 you should've known better. The issue with many black people they get so excited about the opportunity and everything else goes out the window. Even when I'm offered a position in my Field I always read every word and I never ever accept the first offer and in some cases the second offer. Never ever trust white, black or any man or woman putting pressure on you to sign a piece of paper. I learned that from my parents and in Jr. High School. Note: I'm not surprised Sheryl sold her rights away because even now she gets so excited almost out of control with excitement. So if she's like that now, I can only imagine how she was at 22, and that's why she wasn't focused when it came to contracts or signing on the dotted line. People, always know what you're signing and if not pay a lawyer $50-$100 to read it and explain it for you so you're well informed, now that's money well spent. Also, select your own lawyer not a referral from the guy behind the desk.

You're not surprised she sold her rights unknowingly because she's excited about a legacy she left behind???? You need to jump off you high horse, just because your parents taught you does not mean everyone else's did, plus this was over 40 years ago. You're jumping on here judging someone that you know nothing of their personal life back then, like you actually doing something...

@@kaydee1485 - No I'm not surprised, she, coming from Jamaica, oh I'm really not surprised. That's right I'm on a really high horse because I was taught better and have common sense. One yr ago or 40 yrs ago, I still had common sense. Sheryl Lee Ralph mentioned enough about herself over the yrs so I don't need to know more about her personal life she told the public enough about it herself. As far as my actually doing something let me inform you. I have a Master's degree as a Petroleum Engineer, make six figures, am married, live in a gated community, and live extremely well; how say you? Now Kay, never assume someone who responds isn't doing well, we all aren't poor like yourself. Education would do you well instead of worrying or following someone in Hollywood. Note: Today many black people don't read contracts, don't hire a lawyer to read for them, and explain it's still happening due to when they see a dollar that's all that matters you're probably one of them yourself.

We can not continue to blame others for our ignorance. There is a reason these new African artist that are coming out aren't getting played by the industry. It's because they are educated. These kids have degrees. They are not being taken out of the trenches. In Africa education is valued over everything. North American blacks need to learn from this. We have an generations of financially bankrupt ppl. So we are desperate and take anything that's given to us.
