- Built by OpenGOAL, Jak 2 has been ported to PC and is fully playable!
Jak 2, or Jak II: Renegade in PAL regions, is now available to play on PC thanks to OpenGOAL. OpenGOAL represents a fully-fledged, original x86-64 implementation, which translates into enhanced performance, precision, and compatibility. First it was Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, and now Jak II is here, but in beta.
There are still small bugs, but it's never been easier to install and play this fantastic game on PC.

This is truly amazing. This game having mod support opens up the game for everyone. I hope we see Jak 3 next year.
I think there’s a huge chance we see Jak 3 by the end of next year.
The gap between Jak 1 and 2 was 14/15 months. Personally I doubt we'll see Jak 3 next year, but I'd love to be wrong.@@CrystalFissure
@@MuchWhittering That is true, but remember that a lot of 3 and 2 is combined and re-used. There’s new mechanics in 3 but I’d imagine the code crossover is higher. I could see maybe early 2025 if not late next year.
@@CrystalFissureAlthough both uses more or less the same code, could the new mechanics be ported easily? I think it would take a bit more time, but im not sure.

It really is a testament to ND's calibre back in the day, seeing how damn good this looks for a 20 year old game. The OpenGOAL team have done a fantastic job

I grew up on Ratchet, Sly and Jak. It's only recently I've appreciated how great they all are visually compared to tons of PS2 games.

Something I'd love to see is the High-Detail cutscene character models being used during gameplay.
I remember as a kid wondering why in-game Jak looked so different to the cutscene Jak.

Update: I'd recently gotten an External DVD Drive, and it was completely worth it, if not only for being able to play my Ps2 games on PC with PCSX2 and watch my DVDs but to also play Jak 1 and 2's OpenGOAL ports, and they're amazing.
Jak 2 is a timeless master piece, there are things in this game modern games can't hold a candle too and it was truly ahead of its time.
I agree. If another developer developed a Jak 2-esque game I’d be so happy.
I never played the Jak games back in the day, but just in a general sense I'm thrilled that so many retro games have been getting fan made PC ports recently. It is of course always nice when it's done officially as well, but fans always seem to put in that extra love and care with the options and features that more official projects rarely do these days.

I know everyone’s looking forward to Jak 3, but I’m hoping that they also take a crack at Jak X Combat Racing. That game is so underrated and is hard to play without problems. You’re limited to original hardware where many PS2 models have the notorious “infinite auto save” bug, PCSX2 which can still be really buggy and slow sometimes, or the horrid PS2 Classics version on PS4. It would be amazing to have a stable version readily-available on PC with mod support too 🤤
I remember falling victim to the save error. Absolutely dire. So yeah, I’d also love to see Jak X ported!
I agree, Jak X may be a spinoff without the on-foot gameplay, but it still retains, and refines, mechanics from the prior entries.
I’m not gonna lie, when Jak X came out, I distinctly did not want it if it was just driving objectives without any sort of tasks to do outside of the vehicles. I know it’d be a tall order to have anyone rework the Jak X racing tracks into playable on-foot levels, but I personally would LOVE to explore the racetracks on-foot just to feel like I’m playing a cancelled Jak 4 prototype.

I never saw any footage of Jak X for the longest time, and for years I assumed the racing mechanic would be closer to the zoomer races in Jak II than to the buggies in Jak 3. There's a part of me that's still a little bummed it isn't. I wonder if something like that could be done through OpenGOAL
I know I'm late but the Greatest Hits version does not have the auto save bug. Unfortunately, it was never fixed on PAL regions. It also only happened on Slim PS2s because of the change of the IOP chip going from the PS1 MIPS processor to PowerPC. That messed with a few PS2 games including Jak X. It even affected PS1 compatibility, a lot more titles started displaying issues.

Do you have any idea why Sony made this change to the slim revision when it came to input/output functionality? Was it perhaps the only way they could reduce the size, power consumption, or heat to acceptable levels on the slim model?
I may have next to no knowledge about the matter, but just my experience working in IT taught me that you can't make such low-level changes arbitrarily, as you're probably going to break functionality in software that was tailored to the original model.

I definitely want to play it again. I did an LP of the PS3 version years ago and it was fun, so doing one on the PC has the potential to be even better.

I played to up to where you get the Scattergun yesterday, and man it just looks phenomenal. Entering and exiting the city is incredibly fast too

I can definitely say that OpenGoal has made me consider getting an External Disc Drive so that I can play the decomps of the Jak trilogy, the fact that the team were able to decompile the code for the original games is rather impressive to me. If nothing else, getting an External DVD Drive will make it so I can play my Ps2 and Ps1 games on PC which is pretty nice.
what i love the most about pc ports is keyboard and mouse support and not having the hassle of emulating it
I spent all day yesterday playing this. Obviously it has bugs right now, but it's great, and I can't wait for more polish to come. Honestly playing in 1080p in proper widescreen is a big step up in itself.
The loading is indeed instant. Went from the Dig to Haven and just mashed Triangle to skip the cutscene. You're there instantly. The door transitions are basically instant too. The wonders of modern computing. I like the light bar effects you get on a PS4/5 controller too.
What are the bugs you have experienced? I’m gonna LP Jak 1 first, so by the time I get to 2, I could imagine most issues will be fixed. But yeah it’s so much fun.
Most of them are already well-known, so they should be fixed, but ones I know of:
Sound effects often don't play, particularly in gun courses.
Menu text is messed up in PAL versions.
The options to have normal/inverted camera controls don't do anything.@@CrystalFissure

The camera options work now, but the audio issues during gun courses are still there, and there's some lag or slow down when playing at above 120fps in some instances, particularly when your Jak and jumping or spinning. That's all I've encountered. Just from my experiences, other than that it's a perfect port
Jak and Daxter, particularly 2 and 3 were a huge part of my childhood, some of my favorite games growing up and still today. I'd heard that custom content with OpenGOAL was being made, but somehow I completely missed that they made an entire PC port of Jak 1 with it until two days ago. Installed it, got it running, and was absolutely blown away by it. What are the odds that now just two days after I discovered this, they have a fully playable version of Jak 2 up! I don't know what I was expecting to do tonight, but playing Jak 2 on my PC was definitely not one of them. Incredible stuff. It's a great time to be a Jak fan!
Glad you found OpenGOAL! Very lucky you were able to play 1 and 2 so close to eachother, the wait for 2 has been arduous but worth it. And you can't rush them, nor would I ever want them to rush it. But I'm glad 2 is in beta, and 3 is on the horizon!

I'm so happy to see the Jak games getting amazing versions to play with OpenGOAL. Man we really need the Spyro trilogy decompiled! Also wanted to add that it's true widescreen now. The PS3 and PS4 versions of the games used the widescreen mode from PS2 which cropped/zoomed the image in from the 4:3 image.
Oh wait, really? I didn’t know that’s how it worked with those versions. And yes we really do worth Spyro.
A lot of PS2 games are like that. Ratchet was the same. Jak X DOES have a proper widescreen though.@@CrystalFissure
Its probably wishful thinking on my part, but I'd love ND/Sony could see the effort these guys have put in with remastering the games and have them come in to update the console versions on the PS4/5.
You'd be more likely for fans to do it as homebrew, although I don't think PS4 homebrew is much of a thing yet.
It would be great but sadly they just don’t seem to care. In an ideal world they’d just purchase this and figure it out.
To the best of my knowledge, a lot of the people who worked on J&D don't work at Naughty Dog anymore. FWIR, Jak 3 had the shortest dev time of the three and was done during a time when ND was transitioning leadership. I think a lot of the J&D team moved on to other companies after completing Jak 3, which contributed to the cancellation of the original ND Jak 4 and explains why Sony foisted off the IP on a different developer and we ended up with The Lost Frontier

I remember seeing a TH-cam channel showcasing the use of Unreal Engine to recreate the Ratchet & Clank look and feel on PC. I don’t think the guy intends to remake or port the original trilogy though, but this is the closest fan project I can think of.

I was not ready for the hype that was about to unfold for me. that intro with 165 fps was AMAZING!!!!!! I keep it on 60 most of the time but sometimes I do flip on 165 despite the issues lol.
Jak 3 was the first game that My brothers and I played so I'm ultimately waiting for that one. But we ended up playing the other 2 as well so THIS IS SO GREAT to have. We actually never beat Jak 2 so this is perfect for redemption

The work opengoal are doing for these games is really impressive. I doubt this'll ever happen, but it would be cool if Sony worked with them to give these versions official releases on PC & PS5.
They really should. I get that it’s complicated legally but they’re objectively the best way to play the games IMO.
I know it’s likely gunna take quite a while but I’m waiting on Jak 3, that’s my personal favourite

It's nice to have the launcher version now instead of having to use console commands every time or type in the explorer bar. There were some horrible audio glitches and ping noises a while back (builds in the last 6 months) too but this version is great with all the different QoL options and being able to just click to launch.
100%. All the recent improvements, bug fixes and optimisations as well as ease of use is what sets this apart.
Ever since the Jak 1 port came out last year, I've been waiting for this one. The Jak series is something I really want to revisit again, but the PS4 digital ports have horrible sound issues, the PS3 HD remaster of Jak 2 specifically has a weird music glitch that doesn't play the strings in Haven City's theme and it really bothers me, and the games don't exactly emulate well on my PC for some reason without having some texture issues (I think it has something to do with my graphics card being AMD and the game running better with the Open GL renderer, which doesn't work well with AMD graphics cards).
Needless to say, a decompiled fan-made PC port of this trilogy is just what I need to play these games again without having to dig out my PS2.
I was anticipating that a Jak 2 and Jak 3 PC port would happen after Precusor Legacy's port! It makes me realize the vast potential for modding in the Jak games, something that wasn't possible on PS2, even on emulators.
We could actually have things like:
- Making Dark Jak in Jak 2 work like the 3rd game where you can transform in and out of it at any time and stay transformed for as long as the player wants without forcing them to wait until the eco meter runs out
- Port Jak's model design from Jak 2 to Jak 3 with his long hair and Dark Jak's horns and black nails (which were present in official renders but not ingame for some reason)
- Add new guns and abilities, like the cut dark punch from the E3 demo
- Port Dark Giant and its enhanced moves from Jak 2 to Jak 3 + make Dark Invisibility allow for the player to actually sneak past enemies
- Allow the player to use the marauder vehicles and store them at Spargus's garage
- Restore cut areas and their corresponding music (sections of Baron's Palace)
- Allow the player in Jak 2 to have access or the ability to obtain all of Dark Jak's abilities at the start instead of locking them until reaching a certain arc of the game. This made it hard to enjoy Dark Giant to its fullest because you get it at the very end of game upon collecting the last skull gems with the Titan Suit underneath Haven's waterway area)
Seeing stuff like this for a game I grew up as a kid playing makes me so happy to know that people still love this game, I hope Naughty Dog sees the love this series has always gotten and hopefully reboots this amazing franchise. The world needs a Jak and Daxter

@@CrystalFissurehow about a mod that allows you to actually fly freely without having two hover modes? Do you think that is possible? I'm sure if you go high enough the map will become black because you'd be out of bounds so it would have to account for that.
Be really cool to see more PS classics get this treatment like Ratchet, Sly, the PS1 Crash and Spyro games, especially since those arent available natively on any modern hardware. Dont know how hard they would be compared to Jak but hopefully its considered after the Jak games are finished.
Crash Team Racing is being decompiled. Crash 1 im not sure. There was a github page a long time ago but idk if its being worked.
Sly would be cool! I still haven't finished 2, 3 or 4 despite owning them. Just don't have the time, but maybe one day.
jak trilogy had the advantage of being made with the same framework but I really hoping something similar starts happening with other PS2 games. Ratchet and Clank 1 on PC with widescreen would be a dream
Ratchet and Clank really would be. I don’t want to set up my PS3 recording stuff and would love to just play it on PC but both the PS3 version and PS2 versions are a bit glitchy. So a PC port would be so great!
I'd love to see the Ratchet games decompiled since those do not run well on the PS2 emulator. They work better on the PS3 but since the game is locked to 60 if your computer can't keep up the game goes into slow motion....

It’s interesting yeah, these days the PCSX2 emulation is quite solid, but it’s still not perfect yet. Haven’t tried RPCS3 yet for the Ratchet games.
@@CrystalFissure I was getting 60fps in the opening level of Ratchet 2 in RPCS3 versus 30ish in PCSX2. I have a mid-level PC. I had a similar experience with MGS2 last year where RPCS3 was better than PCSX2.
I hope so desperately that either the OpenGOAL team or a modder creates a mod to in-instate roll jump damage in Jak II. In TPL, if you roll jumped into an enemy or chest, it caused damage and would break them. There's no good reason that shouldn't be the case in Jak II, but it isn't, and I've died countless times from roll jumping towards a group of enemies and getting hit before I recovered when in TPL, I'd have sent them flying
Really hope they can do Ratchet & Clank trilogy after finishing the Jak trilogy fan port

If OpenGOAL can finish both Jak 3 and Jak X Combat Racing, I think the next step is having talks with Sony and Naughty Dog about seeing if there is a possibility on doing an official PC port of these games. I imagine no studio has worked on decompiling these games ever so this would be the time to consider after those games get decompiled to see if its possible to do an official port on PC through Steam but also a more updated version on PS5. We could even see a Unreal Engine 5 layer added to the game as well since its now open to modding. The biggest obstacle to these games now is having the PS2 disks to play these which is most likely not exactly possible for everyone. Otherwise you could play these on PS5 though right now.

There's no money in it for Sony, and Naughty Dog moved on from Jak.

Since PS2 controller has pressure sensitive buttons, how will that translate to PC? I don't know about jak 2 but in jak 3, it was a feature for controlling the acceleration/top speed of those sand buggies
Im currently playing using A DualSense/Ps5 controller. It should work the same if not better than the original.
Nice, I never got to play J&D, too busy with iNfamous or whatever. Now i can run it at 509 fps and disregard physics.

I think there’s a chance it’s fixed in the next release. It shouldn’t be far off. There’s already a 0.2.0 version that fixed a bunch of bugs/issues.

You could probably mod in more checkpoints but it’s the same as the base game.

Damn didn’t even know this existed, I’m play jak 2 on pcsx2 with a texture mod but the draw distance is abit annoying

Damn, that’s unfortunate. Have you tried installing DS4 tool? Or Steam? They can help pick up things like PS4/PS5 controllers.

You only need the disk to legally import the files. Or an ISO you've ripped. More info about how it works is on the OpenGOAL site.

Yeah it’s hard to explain. I think aesthetically I love the world of Jak 1 because of its vibrance and beauty but Jak 2 has this feeling that you can’t look away from.

Audio is bit buggy. Only area its persistent i have seen in gun courses.
They're working on those bugs as we speak, so it won't be a problem for too much longer!

Jak 2 is near perfect (I accept only the Renegade version as definitive, thank you very much). Jak 3 needs a few moves and ammo capacities nerfed, and then it could be made perfect.
I'm having a bitch of a time getting this installed. keep getting "Failed to extract and validate ISO" and i have no idea why. both for jak 1 and jak 2. the iso should be fine, they both fire up on pcsx2 no problem. i can't access their discord server for reasons that would take too long to explain here. anyone got any ideas?

@@CrystalFissure Thanks, my pc crashed in in june and i had to do a total reset. prior to that, I had jak 1 working and it was the same iso file.

Hmmm, I looked it up, it appears there is keyboard support but I’m not sure how to get past the menu - maybe try pressing all the different buttons on your keyboard and mouse. You need to get to the control settings to map everything. Hopefully there is a way for you to do it. Look up the OpenGOAL server and go there for advice if you need it as well. Good people there.

That would make sense yeah, but they’re always trying to optimise settings to make it work on lower spec computers. Plus other customisation options.

Textures look worse when stretched to over 480p
There is no stretching if you play in widescreen.
@@sebastianaliandkulche if you look at a 480p image on a 4K screen, it will either be in a small window the size of a postage stamp, or it will be stretched and become blurry. I’m not talking about stretching 4:3 to 16:9.

@@sebastianaliandkulche if you force the game to run at 4K, the textures are still 480p or lower. Im sure someone will eventually make an HD texture pack for it but then that will change the whole look of the game and lose the original charm. Just play on a real ps2 with a 480p screen for the definitive experience. You’re also losing the pressure sensitive buttons that the game was designed around and you will be going petal to the metal everytime you hit the x button while driving
@@trapez77 And even with those 480p textures it still looks somehow better than more newer games, lol. 3d textures still upscales well in higher resolutions. The only thing it doesnt upscale as well is the 2d sprites (like the HUD).
But if its the PS2 version just ported to PC! In fact it is way more accurate than the PS3 and PS4 versions. Jak 1 had an option to make the game 100% accurate to the original, resolution and even the LOD system, in a few weeks they would probably add those options to Jak 2 as well. Unless you use Windows 11, you could connect a CRT to play the game if you feel purist.
I guess assuming you connect a PS2 controller Open Goal would be compatible with the button sensitivity but i cant test it right now.
Oh and i think the original doesnt run at 480p but at 448p i think.
I played this at 120 fps, in super ultrawide 7860x2160 - and apart from audio bugs, there was absolutely nothing to speak of. Worked flawlessly from start to finish.
The game is just as Buggy as Emulators atm. Played like 10 hours since i saw your vid and Emulators actually feel smoother at times and the Emulators you can swap keybinds, you cannot here atm.
That’s interesting - in what way do you find it smoother? It could be because it’s a bit resource intensive on computers - I’ve had no troubles but my PC is fairly new. I thought you could change the keybinds now without the ini/json file? But I read that in the server recently, but have never needed to change it myself.
