A 91 year friend of mine passed away about 6 years ago, told me he saw Penno about 5 times at the the Met, and said he might have had the largest voice he ever heard, at least in the middle register. He also saw Bjorling 5 times, Tucker 5 times and Del Monaco over 60 times. Unfortunately, Penno only lasted about 5 years.

Thanks for telling me the details. Penno's vocal cords are 100% open, making his voice louder than average.
Tenors today, they don't understand that, they've never really opened their vocal cords in their lives, and they don't know what it sounds like to open them.
This exercise, it's mandatory at first, it's okay to open the vocal cords very stiffly. Once you get used to it, half a second to a second before you sing the note, you open the vocal cords with your breath, and before you sing the note, there is a very short pause, and now the tenor opens his mouth and the voice comes out, the voice can't come out too fast, too fast, the vocal cords don't open enough time.
Your friend here is very happy and has had so many good experiences.

Another voice from an era gone....Another voice not mentioned as "one of the greats" yet still with a sonorousness that seems to be well beyond most now strutting the stage as "accomplished artists".....Do singers today begin to "perform" too early for their as yet not fully matured voices????

You are right, the tenor of today is not comparable to what I have listed here, far from it.
      1
After winning one or two vocal competitions, she immediately began her singing career. They do not have enough time to create their own internal space and improve the art of singing.
      2
The teacher who guides them, the level is too low, what soprano as teacher, baritone as tenor teacher, this is a joke. The vocalization mechanism is completely different.
      3
Due to the incorrect singing in the early stage, these shortcomings of them are constantly amplified on the later stage. They don't realize that they are wrong.
They don't improve their technique, they just specialize in resonance and vibrato. Nowadays, tenors almost never sing a note correctly. The breath of the first note of singing goes all the way up to the vocal cords, and Caruso said that the first note of singing, like natural speech, comes from the chest.
That's something 99.99 tenors don't understand. Thank you for participating and supporting my channel.
