    -------
Anticipation can be dangerous. Although feelings of excitement may seem as though they’re inherently positive, the possibility of falling short of your expectations can mean that sometimes, they’re always going to eclipse reality.
In the music industry, the major record companies trade in leveraging your excitement into cold, hard cash. Orchestrated by marketing departments that have mastered the art of the rollout, they can whip the world into a frenzy about a forthcoming project. Other times, the artists take such complete ownership of their artistry that they do it themselves. For example, look at the unique rollout of Kendrick Lamar’s forthcoming Oklama and the palpable hype that surrounds it.
But while building hype is a necessary evil of the recording industry, the problems arise when the promise of something momentous goes unfulfilled and the listening public find disappointment where something special was meant to be.
And at the moment, this is a lesson that Jack Harlow is being forced to learn the hard way.

The Jack Harlow push was crazy. He received a sneaker deal, was on every magazine cover, was on every talk show, did SNL, tried to sing, and in return he dropped a MID album in between Future and Kendrick Lamar.

Yeah that's the thing, I mean for sure he is being hyped to hell by rappers and also fans, so I see the perspective that he failed to live up to those expectations. At the same time it's like he's just a dude. So he didn't make 200k, he still sold damn near more albums than a LOT of artists opening week. And there are tons of artists like him just going with the flow, not much regard for creativity. I could also see the criticism if he was talking shit about how much he was going to sell, but I really don't think so. Opinions like this seem redundant, for people like him, but it was good vid, no hate to HHM

I see the Jack Harlow push the same way I saw the Macklemore push back in 2012-14. He did SNL, multiple magazine covers, was a XXL Freshman, and had major accolades with awards and the charts. The difference between Macklemore and Harlow, however, is that people still find him as a good artist who has potential and was able to keep their head up after hitting a slump with their fans. I think Jack Harlow’s gonna grow with his fans instead of his fans outgrowing him, but only time will tell.

    • @anhiirr

his fans? like dudes that pretend to like him to smash chicks...and chicks that like him bc they think JACK will smash them? And the low % that actually like him for his music as actual listeners? BC as long as theres college students idk about this "fans out growing him thing" i have cousins fresh OUTTA HS bumping KIDS from mac miller in 2022....and Kush and OJ....thats that whole thing about "FANS" out growing certain artists. I grew to like mac more as a producer as i got older. Same with KANYE from their initial albums vs the songs/raps they put out later on into their career. U look at guys like jack and wonder if hes actually not a bad guy then well shit i dont ever have to worry about hearing about him over dosing, or falling off bc of mentals, or some sex/bs scandal getting him cancelled...not a fan of his music....but i "could" be one day if he makes something i like and keeps at it. Jack harlow is popular for the same rasons radiohead is IMO Im not white so i think it has a lot to do with that NGL. BC i cant understand why/how he got so big(like stuck/sells) Other than what i stated about his fans. IDK its just like you go HUMM was AKON/FLO RIDA/T-PAIN so "DOPE" back then bc it was a different time...or were they just being PUMPED bc their product was palatable to the "WHITES". I mean Theres white girls that turn up to WAP/Jack harlow...and some that can turn up to afro puffs...and the SHEER amount/difference between the 2...is obvious or else wed have A hell of a lot more "less" attractive looking women pumping out crass/brute raps to this day. Thats the damn shame of it all....non th0ts are too busy listening to "INDIE" music or etc soulful music, pop etc...rap aside....leaving the th0t culture/demographic to be all thats left to cash in on....sex sells....so they double down until the machine/system breaks itself and "moral superiority" becomes the new trend.

“10 years” rapping isn’t as experienced as one may make it out to seem, Em and Jay had been doing it for about 12 + years and even then after finding some style they really liked most people didn’t even take notice.
It takes time, effort and a lot of trial and error to get the best out of an Artist.

The new album was very mid, everyone knows that. But people who say his career is over or that the “experiment failed” are overreacting. Plenty of rappers/artists have had sophomore slumps that they bounced back from. Even “corny” rappers like big Sean still had commercial hits and well-received albums after their sophomore slumps. Real fans of Jack know he has the capability to make solid projects like Loose and Confetti. If he can tap back into the energy of those projects then I think he’ll be fine. Either way, his personality is gonna keep him in some form of entertainment industry/the public eye for a while. But who knows, maybe he’ll fade into white boy obscurity like G-Eazy. Good on the label for pulling that off but this kid was just ripe for the picking. Anyone recall the Pink line “we’ll make you a star, just change everything you are?” Although it’s gotten to the point where he purposely targets black girls as an audience and they seem to be eating up his fake ass. I think he had the same issue as Saweetie being that their looks/personality/social media presence overshadowed their music career. Jack is a talented rapper no doubt but most people bought into him through Tiktok with “What’s Poppin’”. The difference between him and Drake is that Drake in his earlier days cultivated a unique sound with 40 and Boi-1da that helped separate him from other popular rappers. He also sung and delved into issues not many rappers were open to talking about. Drake was able to carve out his own lane early on. Even though Drake’s music now is horribly mediocre, he still has classic projects and songs so he’s able to get a pass with putting out mid music. Jack unfortunately doesn’t have that pass. He still needs to establish his sound and voice. But he’s young so hopefully he’ll figure out his artistic lane.

Jack has enough talent with the right fire to craft something decent. Saweetie, on the other hand, is better at being a social media influencer, that's where her true talent lies. She is not a good rapper and rarely even has her writers craft her anything worth releasing. There's a reason she has yet to release her debut album.

His music is like white noise ( no pun intended lol), loud and flashy enough to occasionally perk up your ear, but so droning and uninteresting that you can cook dinner, clean the house and do your math homework while it buzzes in the background. I personally leave each JH song feeling unmoved, but occasionally entertained.
His likeability and his magnetic personality has been and continues to be his greatest strength as an artist. He is talented, no doubt, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that that's not what won him the favor with music industry. The push from the highest rungs of the industry and his social media clout created a double-edge sword, boosting his profile as an MC, even though he'd never be able to match the hype generated.
*CHTKMY* was him aping his idols and recycling the same ol' same ol', occasionally great, but mostly passable and sometimes unspeakably bad. However, he has alot of drive and optimism so I won't count him out..yet.

he's not speaking about his album sales at all -which is a factor, not THE factor- but his threadbare style that doesnt fit with the hype that people have had with Harlow's music and artist concept. His "fail" born with the idea to make a solemn album with personality, "unique" and "game-changer", when, at the day, he hasn't proved that. Industry wants one thing that Jack doesnt have for now. It is a little suspicious to me that his collab with Drake has been his only leak, and with all the drama about Drake and XXX, it's not unbelievable to me that he saw Jack Harlow making huge waves and decided that it had to slow down. Get away from wooing the ladies with this abstract light stuff and come with some heavy 808s and a bravado in his lyrics that make people take notice. If the chatter is there that he could be "the next drake" he needs to be assertive and grab that sh*t.
Follow that up with a concept album that sticks to a theme throughout and release a short film to go with it. An undercover cop in 80s Miami with synthesizer heavy throwback beats - he rocks aviators and a mustache in the short film... or a Blade Runner/Tron futuristic bounty hunter with drawn out chords - he rocks a leather duster with Neo shades in the short film.
